Replying to Alastair in Hampshire (15.15). If you do that, would you not then get endless arguments over whether the ball crossed the rope? Simpler solution would be to put a microchip in the ball and detectors in the rope. Immediate indication rather than multiple replays.

  2. Ind 54-2published at 11 overs

Harmanpreet Kaur almost skies one but it lands safe, just short of the backtracking fielder at mid-off.

Just four runs off Charlie Dean's second over.

Linsey Smith did a full-length dive and got stuck in the ground. She still has a smile on her face!

  4. Ind 52-2published at 10.3 overs

Linsey Smith dives to stop a single from Smirti Mandhana, but ends up planting her face on the ground during her efforts.

There will be a slight break for a mandatory concussion check here.

  5. Ind 50-2published at 10 overs

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur joins Smriti Mandhana in the middle.

And Kaur opens her account in style, sending Sophie Ecclestone to the boundary through the covers. It was in the air but is well clear of Sophia Dunkley.

Sophie Ecclestone is a world-class bowler!

She bowled so nicely at Southampton too. Doing what she does best - taking wickets and breaking partnerships.

And Sophie Ecclestone does just that!

Harleen Deol chips it back to the left-armer but she still has work to do and gets low to complete the catch.

A crucial wicket just when we thought India were starting to tick.

  8. Ind 46-1published at 9 overs

Three more runs from that over as Smriti Mandhana moves to 20 and Harleen Deol is on 16.

India are starting to build a partnership here and Sophie Ecclestone is coming in, looking to break that.

There's been a lot of talk about England's fielding. Could Sophia Dunkley have dived forward? Potentially.

  10. Ind 43-1published at 8.2 overs

Almost a chance for Sophia Dunkley at deep mid-wicket.

Harleen Deol brings out the slog sweep and sends Charlie Dean's second ball in the air, but it falls just short of Dunkley, who fails to judge the trajectory and concedes a boundary.

England have bowled a lot fuller with the new ball today, operating on an average length of 4.9 metres compared to 6.1 metres at the same stage down in Southampton. Despite bowling fuller only 19% of England's deliveries have been hitting the stumps today, down from 30% in the last ODI.

England now introduce spin with Charlie Dean, replacing Lauren Bell.

But could Bell have had a wicket to her name at Lord's?

  13. Ind 37-1published at 8 overs

Em Arlott is back in her zone with some good disciplined bowling.

After Smriti Mandhana takes a single from the first delivery, she piles the pressure on Harleen Deol, who fails to tick the scoreboard from the remainder of the over.

  14. Ind 36-1published at 7 overs

Lauren Bell recovers well for the rest of the over and gives away three from the final four balls.

We have got clear blue skies in London now.

I feel like Smriti Mandhana has been quite smart.

The ball was moving around, and you saw her give herself a few overs.

You see some people players get boundaries through muscle, but it is pure technique and pure timing.

  16. Ind 33-1published at 6.2 overs

End of the powerplay, but it's back-to-back boundaries at the start of the seventh over for Smriti Mandhana.

She punches Lauren Bell's first ball through mid-off to the rope before driving the next one through the covers for the same result.

Thanks for the coverage, including the reminiscences about the World Cup and the Lord's match three years ago. An idea regarding the controversial practice of running out the non-striker when they are backing up: could the batter be called one short if they complete a run by leaving the crease early? It seems a fairer consequence. It could be called by the umpire/TV umpire as are no-balls currently. Hopefully there'll be no more rain, so no time to discuss this, or anything other than today's cricket.

  18. Ind 25-1published at 6 overs

Finally, an over where India were on top.

They take 11 runs off Em Arlott's third over but Nat Sciver-Brunt keeps her trust in the England seamers with Lauren Bell continuing at the other end.

  19. Ind 22-1published at 5.2 overs

Em Arlott back in, having conceded just one run from two overs.

But she has not had the best start to this over. Harleen Deol almost sends her to the boundary through mid-wicket but Charlie Dean does well to save a run.

Then Smriti Mandhana uses her feet and whacks her over the ring to clear mid-on and bring India's first boundary of the game.

  20. Ind 14-1published at 5 overs

End of another good over, that saw just three runs.

But England would be disappointed they haven't sent the dangerous Smriti Mandhana back to the dugout.
