Summary

  1. Coming up this week...published at 18:14 British Summer Time 6 July

Thanks for your company for a rather one-sided Test at Edgbaston. If you scroll down you can read all the reaction and watch some brief highlights by clicking the video above.

There will be full highlights on Today At The Test at 19:00 on BBC Four just before four back-to-back episodes of Andy Pandy (we're not joking...) and on iPlayer as well.

Make sure you check out Matthew Henry's report from Edgbaston, too...

We will, of course, be back at Lord's on Thursday for the third Test, including ball-by-ball commentary from the Test Match Special team. England's women play the fourth T20 against India before then while we have coverage of games in the Blast over the next few days as well.

  2. 'We tried to apply ourselves'published at 18:11 British Summer Time 6 July

England captain Ben Stokes speaking to Test Match Special: "Difficult one, obviously coming off that victory last week, coming away on the wrong side of the result is very disappointing.

"We turned up here and there were some overheads when we did the toss. You've got to live by what you chose. I think the two big parts that game, we had them 200-5. We couldn't quite find the way to really burst them open. And then to be unable to close in on that big total in the first innings. It's difficult to get back in the game form there but the way that Jamie Smith and Harry Brook played, they tried their hardest for us."

On Jamie Smith and Harry Brook: "The way that Jamie came out he way he did but then was able to read the situation out there when India went on the defensive against him and milk it then explode again. The way that Harry played, it just comes natural to him. He made 150 runs look pretty easy out there. Being 80-5 down is always going to be tough to swing that momentum back towards you."

On how they approached the last day: "It was one of those where you lose those three wickets like we did last night. You lose two wickets early on after the rain. You have to be realistic and understand where you are. We knew the task at hand was to bat the day out, there is always a process towards batting and the process for us today was to go out and bat the whole day.

"I thought the way we still went out there and try to apply ourselves and played the way that we know was going to give us a chance to get through those 80 overs, I know we weren't able to do that but. We went out there with that process but weren't good enough to do that today."

  3. England add Atkinson to squadpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 6 July
    Breaking

Word has just reached us that England have added fast bowler Gus Atkinson to their squad for the third Test at Lord's which starts on Thursday.

  4. Postpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 6 July

England's hopes of salvaging a draw out of this Test basically rested on their top order. Ollie Pope, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith all got in but were then got out by India's bowlers.

  5. 'Opportunity missed with toss'published at 18:03 British Summer Time 6 July

England head coach Brendon McCullum on Test Match Special: "We ran second for five days. I thought India played exceptionally well. Shubman Gill was at an elite level and played brilliantly on this pitch. We weren’t quite able to play how we wanted to on it and they thoroughly deserved to win."

On England missing an opportunity in Jasprit Bumrah's absence: "I thought Akash Deep bowled outstandingly on that surface. Obviously growing up playing on those types of wickets and he hit his length and was able to utilise the surface where he could. He was exceptional. Bumrah will more than likely come back in for the next one so we’ve just got to make sure we’re well planned and well prepared and ready for the next challenge. It will be quite different I imagine to this surface and that’s probably a good thing for us."

On whether it's England's policy to chase: "I think as the game unfolded we probably looked back on that toss and said did we miss an opportunity there and it’s probably fair. We didn’t expect that the wicket would play quite as it did and hence we probably got it slightly wrong. But we did have them 200-5 and we weren’t able to capitalise on that position and when you win the toss and bowl you’re hoping to, well you’re not anticipating the opposition’s going to score 580 and then from that point we’re behind the game.

"It was only a brilliant partnership from Jamie Smith and Harry Brook which gave us any balance in the game throughout the five days. That’s something we’ve got to look at. We’re not rigid with our plans. It’s just we thought this pitch might get better to bat on as we went through the five days but as we saw it didn’t."

Ben Stokes does not contribute to the team anymore. Bowling or batting. And now can’t even get the toss right. What is he doing in the team now? Surely it’s time for him to step aside so an all-rounder can come in and actually score runs and take wickets.

I have a real concern about Jofra Archer playing in the next Test. I can see why England are wrapping him in cotton wool because he is a gamechanger. It's easy to say that England need him but they need to think about the person as well.

  8. Archer 'fit and ready to go' for Lord'spublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 6 July

England head coach Brendon McCullum on Test Match Special about the performances of Harry Brook and Jamie Smith: "Two very simple players. They’ve got good set-ups, good techniques, and they like to hit the ball and put pressure on the opposition. It’s easy to do when you’re well in front of the game but when you’re 80-5, to still stay true to your policy and stay true to your game to give yourself the best chance shows just how mentally strong they are as well. Both of them played exceptionally well. The rest of us weren’t able to enter the game and have any real impact on it."

On if he's made any selection decisions for the third Test: "No, not yet. We’ll let this one settle and when we get to HQ we’ll have a good think about it."

On Jofra Archer: "He’s fit and ready to go and obviously the other boys have had two Test matches on the spin now so you’d anticipate you would make a change at some stage with the line-up and Jofra is one we’ll look at."

  9. 'Batting is what set the tone for us'published at 17:47 British Summer Time 6 July

India captain Shubman Gill: "It feels amazing. We have three more Tests matches to go and when we win the series I think that it will be a great feeling."

On his batting: "It's very satisfying to be able to score those runs. Coming into the series I worked on a few things and wanted to score big in the series so it's very satisfying to be able to put up big ones."

On the first Test: "I think we came close in that match. There was areas that we needed to be in more control of, fielding was one of them. We fielded brilliantly in this game. There wasn't as many dropped catches and these are the pieces of brilliance that you need as a team and that was one of the reasons that we were able to win this match."

"470 on the board, a lot of people might think that's a lot on the board but when you're batting, there was a chance where we could've killed the game with our batting but when I was out there I just wanted to bat out of the game.

On the toss: "I was actually going to bowl first. On these kind of wickets, in the past couple of years we have seen that if there's anything in the wicket it's in the first session and there was a little bit. I think our openers did brilliantly in the first session and that was the reason why we were able to score so many runs.

"Lord's is one of the most iconic stadiums in the world and as a kid you dream of playing there. It's my first international game there. There's no better honor than to captain my country.

"Words can't describe how much effort our bowlers put in. In the first innings there wasn't much in the wicket but they came in and the kind of lengths that they bowled gave us those early breakthroughs in the top order. Going through England's top order is never easy on these kind of wickets. Batting is what set the tone for us and bowling is what won the game for us."

"We turn up on every day and want to fight and play for our country and want to play every ball with pride. The Indian flag and logo is what we play for."

Will Ben Stokes get as much stick for bowling first in this game as Nasser Hussain has done for doing the same at The Gabba? Bonkers to bowl first in this Test!

    Jamie - Winterton

My hot take, drop Crawley. Smith and Duckett to open. Bethell at 3, Pope at 6 keeping wicket, Stokes at 7. Pick you best bowlers but for my money Liam Dawson is on there. Duckett, Smith, Bethell, Root, Brook, Pope (wk), Stokes, Dawson, Carse, Atkinson, and Archer - that team bats so deep and has loads of bowling options without compromising on quality. Definitely England's best 11 right now.

  11. 'Wicket suited India more'published at 17:42 British Summer Time 6 July

England captain Ben Stokes speaking at the post-match presentation on where the game was lost: "Two moments. Having them 200-5 and not being able to burst them open after a good start with the ball. And being 80-5. It was going to be tough to scrape it back from there. You look back at 200-5. If we were able to burst them open quicker, things could have been different."

On the toss: "It was a tough one. Having a team 200-5, you feel you're in a commanding position. As the game got deeper, it turned into a wicket that suited India more than us."

On whether he's concerned about England's bowlers struggling: "I wouldn't say it's a concern. We ran in, we tried everything, we changed plans, but when a team's on top of you - and India are a class team - it's hard to change the momentum. Shubman Gill had an unbelievable performance."

On collapsing to 25-3: "It's always tough. When you spend time out in the field, your body and mind are tired. It's a difficult position to find yourself in, batting at the end of the day. We're going to be in that position again and it's up to us to get the best out of the position."

On Jamie Smith: "Jamie's been incredible since he came into the team. He's been exceptional with the bat. He goes under the radar with his wicketkeeping. It just shows that he stuck to his guns and played his natural game and the way him and Harry wrestled the momentum back towards us was a very special part of the game to watch."

On who will play at Lord's: "There's a couple of days to take note of that. We'll reassess where everything's at."

Spin will come into the equation in Lord's. I'd be very wary to bowl first when the sun is beating down all day. Imagine how much that surface would've baked on those last couple of days.

The decisions at the toss so far through this series have been wrong.

What a treat for fans of Test cricket. Bazball receives a bloody nose at the hands of a Bumrah-less but flamboyant India who have outplayed their hosts throughout a captivating second Test. Love watching Pant bat: see ball, hit ball. And a special mention for India's bowling attack. The series is perfectly poised heading to Lord’s on Thursday. Magical stuff.

  15. 'Bumrah will definitely play at Lord's'published at 17:34 British Summer Time 6 July

    GillImage source, Getty Images

India captain Shubman Gill, speaking at the post-match presentation after being named player of the match: "I think all of the things we spoke about after the first game, we were spot on with all of those things. The way we came back with our bowling and fielding was tremendous.

"We knew with 400 or 500 we would be in the game, especially if we he held our catches. Both our bowlers bowled brilliantly with the way we were able to get through [England's] top order."

On Akash Deep: "He bowled with so much heart and skilfully with his lengths. He moved it in both directions, which was tough to do. He was magnificent for us."

On his own form: "I am feeling comfortable with my game and if we can win the series that would be a great achievement for us. Every day is a learning curve for me."

On whether Bumrah will play the next Test after being rested: "Definitely back for Lord's. Everyone dreams about playing there. And there is no bigger honour than captaining and leading your country there."

India would lose nothing by dropping Karun Nair and putting Washington Sundar up the order. Great cricket from India. England nothing to be disappointed about though two very talented sides playing Test cricket at the highest level

Please forgive my oddness it appears but I am 100% behind this way of England playing, totally bonkers style yet I’ve seen the best Test match cricket from England in my lifetime during the Stokes/McCullum era and that's been 50 years now. It's exciting and nailbiting and euphoric and disheartening all in one. Long may it continue.
