For England to get a draw from this position would be remarkable because they are having to do what they don't like. They've had to play a different type of cricket here today.

Have we got any hopers out there yet? Hopers who think that England can bat out for a draw here.

Shai Hope maybe, Bob Hope perhaps.

Akash Deep is hunting a five-for, but Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes are defending solidly. With his fifth ball of the over Deep skims a beauty just past the edge of Woakes' defensive prod.

Chris Woakes is a compulsive driver to the off side. He's probably telling himself to not hit it there yet he ends up playing it anyway.

Might seem a little odd for Jamie Smith to be attacking when England are trying to save the match, but there's a school of thought that A) it does not allow a bowler to settle and B) it takes the pressure off himself by focusing on defence again and again, and C) Scoring runs is fun.

Prasidh Krishna returns but neither Smith nor Chris Woakes are particularly troubled by his first over.

  6. Eng 196-6published at 50 overs

Akash Deep hits a crack on the pitch with his third delivery and gets one to jag away from Chris Woakes' defensive prod. Woakes edges his next ball from Deep but with just a slip and gully in place it flies down to the vacant third region for four.

I'm staggered that Ravindra Jadeja was taken out of the attack. He was making things quite difficult. He forced Jamie Smith to edge it a few times.

I'm quite surprised that Jamie Smith took that on again.

Jamie Smith playing his natural game as rocks on to the back foot and this time cuts Washington Sundar.

The penultimate ball of the over and Smith dances once again and hammers the India spinner back over his head for another six. He then nudges one to keep the strike.

If I'm the bowler in this situation, I don't mind that. We have seen a few of Washington Sundar's balls move a bit so I don't mind that.

Jamie Smith skips down the pitch and...boom.

The first ball of Washington Sundar's over is smashed for six.

You feel as if Jamie Smith will have to bat for the rest of the day.

  14. Eng 174-6published at 48 overs

Akash Deep with three dots to Jamie Smith before the England batter picks up a single. Shubman Gill goes a lot more attacking with his field to Chris Woakes, but the Warwickshire man ducks out of the way of a short one then defends solidly.

Jamie Smith's half-century came off 73 balls and it's his seventh 50+ score. This is only the eighth time in Test history that a wicketkeeper has had a 150 score and a half-century in the same game.

There must be something in the marmalade in deepest darkest Peru to give you cause to tap into any optimism, Gus.

Meanwhile, Jamie Smith has passed fifty with a fortuitous clip of the edge off a delivery from Washington Sundar which lifted a little more off the pitch.
