Stokes hits Siraj for back-to-back fours

Lovely shot from Ben Stokes, cutting away for four. And he follows it up with another boundary - a well-timed drive.

The camera has panned around the crowd, picking out one chap holding half a pineapple with a straw sticking out of it and another with what looks like a yellow and white napkin perched on his head as a makeshift hat.

Shubman Gill needs to recognise that Ben Stokes isn't looking to play shots. They need to be aggressive and attack him. On this day five pitch it should be easier to get something out of the surface. There's limited overs left so they need to at least try and get those wickets.

  3. Eng 111-5published at 30 overs

    England need 497 runs

Ravindra Jadeja does indeed enter the attack and a helmet is brought out for the fielder at short leg.

He's peppering Ben Stokes' pads but the England skipper survives four deliveries after Jamie Smith takes a single.

With reference to your recent conversation regarding selection do you think central contracts restrict availability?

    Anon

It probably makes you think twice (or more) about dropping someone if you're paying them a big chunk of change.

Spinner Ravindra Jadeja is limbering up in the background.

Mohammed Siraj will bowl the first over after drinks. He picked up six wickets in the first innings and got rid of Zak Crawley last night.

The average deviation that the Indian bowlers have had so far throughout today is 0.6°, which really puts those two balls into perspective.

Our batting has been dire, no question about it. But we really need to talk about our bowling. Why have India managed to exploit and use our home wickets better than us? It can’t just be conditions and a better ball selection, what are we failing to do and is there anyone in the squad capable of doing more?

    Josh in Bradford

That Akash Deep spell was absolutely unplayable, serious skill on show.

    Nick in Cambridge

My problem with this England team is they are at their best when entertaining but once the hard graft of saving a match comes into play, they look disinterested.

It's the length that Akash Deep plays at, he's willing to pitch it up whereas the England bowlers aren't.

He's getting more out of it today because of the cracks. There's a lot more deviation.

'A brilliant ball' - Deep dismisses Brook for 23

The delivery from Akash Deep that dismissed Harry Brook lbw deviated 2.2° off the pitch - the highest deviation recorded by a pacer in the fourth innings and the fourth-highest by a pacer in the match.

    Drinks - Eng 110-5published at 28 overs

    England need 498 runs

England have made it to drinks on day five, something which wasn't a guarantee after the early departures of Ollie Pope and Harry Brook.

Jamie Smith - as he has been for most of this match - is on the field and he's just pinged a lovely drive for four.

With that shot, England's deficit has dipped below 500 runs.

I must have missed the bit where Jimmy Anderson lost his form. He has been superb for Lancashire... England need him at Lord's.

    Mark

If we’re going to switch out the entire seam attack, there’s a not-so-young man taking plenty of wickets for Lancashire at the moment.

    Kerry in Tonbridge

With opinions like that, I'm not surprised that Matt in Turkey has never once had a text shown. A real kneejerk reaction to talk about bringing Jimmy Anderson back.

This is really magnificent bowling that we are seeing, it's remarkable. How are we seeing reverse swing on an outfield that is so lush and green?

    What an over that was.

  18. Eng 102-5published at 26 overs

    England need 506 runs

Akash Deep opens his arms wide in despair and then puts his hands on his knees. He's beaten Jamie Smith's inside edge and I'm not sure how it's missed everything.

The fourth ball of the over is almost identical. Brilliant bowling. Smith gives a wry smile.

What India have done really well this week with the ball is that they've challenged England's pads. They've got good length and they've forced a lot of lbws. They've also been good on the field, I can't recall many dropped catches.

100 up for England and we've safely navigated Alex in Worcester's (@12:36) prediction of rain at 13:15 BST.

Ben Stokes drives down the ground and a diving Mohammed Siraj demolishes the pile of sawdust used by the bowlers. His effort saves two and he spends the rest of the over shaking out his jumper.
