Disappointing effort from the rain. When we needed it to step up, it slid away down to the South East. Forget the attention on Crawley, Pope and our brittle bowlers, I think the rain needs to have a good hard look in the mirror tonight.

  5. Eng 167-6published at 44 overs

Chris Woakes picks up a single off Ravindra Jadeja. Jamie Smith then blocks out.

Jamie Smith is up to 228 runs, making it the sixth most runs in a Test by someone batting at seven. He is now also in the top 10 of all time for runs made by a wicketkeeper

  7. Eng 166-6published at 43 overs

The Hollies pipe up to the tune of the 'Great Escape' as Jamie Smith rocks on to the back foot to the final ball of Washington Sundar's over and cuts him for four.

Looks like it will be trial by spin for England. Good luck...

It seems that Jamie Smith has the best defensive batting technique in all of England. Does he need to come up the order?

Re Steve from Leicester (@15:03) Hope the game isn't too much like Midsomer Murders. In the episode shown yesterday, the scoreboard operator was stabbed to death during the tea interval.

    Ian in Peterborough

Yes, just like Midsomer Murders. Tea and cucumber sandwiches in the pavilion and a local artist murdered by the vicar as play resumes.

  10. Eng 158-6published at 42 overs

Jamie Smith confidently drives the first ball after lunch from left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja through the covers for four. He then picks up a single leaving Chris Woakes to block out the remainder of the over.

It could be the final 45 minutes, depending on how the spinners bowl.

I'm still confident. Woakes the Wizard is on his way out to save England in front of his home crowd...

Washington Sundar then finds a whole heap of turn from the final ball of his over. A colleague has just said "all of a sudden this looks like a day five pitch".

  14. Eng 153-6published at 40.4 overs

Washington Sundar with three balls of his over to finish, and the first of them takes the edge of Chris Woakes' bat but falls just short of KL Rahul at slip.

Safcpete: England have been totally outplayed in this Test. The two 150s mask a poor performance. 68 runs total from our top three and opening bowler averaging 80mph. Good news is potential replacement players are resting in dressing room.

Mike: England should be extremely concerned. Akash Deep looks absolutely unplayable and our bowlers looked like they were bowling on a motorway all game.

Darren: On a serious note - is Jasprit Bumrah going to come back in at Lord's after this performance? Or does he wait until Old Trafford?

There used to be a formal protocol around these things, Steve, but it's much more relaxed these days depending on individuals and the opposition.

Very new to Test cricket and TMS but laid-up not well, so perfect company. Thank you. Can I ask what happens at lunch? Do the teams go into their own changing rooms/huddle or is it more like you see on Midsomer Murders?
