I don't want to see easy singles. Batters love to rotate the strike but Wood will want four or five balls at the same batter.

Fifty partnerships for the first wicket in both innings for the West Indies.

It's just the fourth time they've managed that in a Test in this country and the first since the Oval Test in 1991 when Desmond Haynes and Phil Simmons opened the batting.

Woakes changes ends to replace Gus Atkinson.

He sends down a maiden to Kraigg Brathwaite.

It is quite a tough pitch to set a field for at the moment because you want your cordon because every now and again one bounces, you want fielders on the leg side because you want to target the stumps for the odd one that keeps low.

But by having more fielders on the leg side, if you get one full there are quite a lot of gaps to push the drives away.

  5. WI 56-0published at 11 overs

The West Indies take a single as a Wood delivery thuds into Mikyle Louis's thigh pad.

I reckon that piece of equipment might be close to outscoring Louis in this innings, given the number of leg byes that been picked up from balls clipping his body.

England have not been able to stem the flow of runs. West Indies are going at more than five an over.

    Target 385

Fifty up for the West Indies!

He pulls Atkinson expansively to the square leg boundary, just missing out on a six.

His side are rattling along at five an over.

This is a tremendous start for the West Indies.

Wood is pitching the ball right up but Louis is a front-foot player and that's where he would prefer it.

  10. WI 44-0published at 9 overs

Mark Wood takes the ball for England, to cheers from the Trent Bridge crowd.

His first ball wallops Mikyle Louis on the back foot, before the West Indies opener picks up a two and a four with off side drives.

Wood responds by firing a couple of mid-90s deliveries past the bat. Fantastic stuff.

  11. WI 38-0published at 8 overs

Tidy four for Branthwaite, tucking Atkinson's delivery off his pads and seeing it whistle to the mid-wicket boundary.

He takes two more in the covers before Atkinson closes with four dot balls.

Louis is at the start of his Test career and this is as tough as it gets. But he's hanging in there.

  13. WI 32-0published at 7 overs

    Edged by Brathwaite!

...but the ball drops short of first slip.

Woakes then sends a rising delivery past the gloves of Mikyle Louis.

    That's encouraging for England.

Jammed in back of a length, darts back and keeps low. The odd one from that Stuart Broad End has just climbed as well.

It looks like there is a bit of a patch there. When the bounce is inconsistent, it can be a nightmare for the batters.

Finally, this track might be deteriorating.

  15. WI 30-0published at 6 overs

Atkinson concedes more leg byes, once again clipping Louis and seeing the ball run to the fine leg boundary.

He then sends down a delivery that keeps low, followed by one that displays extra bounce. A sign of being able to get something out of this pitch?

That was one for the photographers from Louis.

  17. WI 25-0published at 4 overs

First runs for Mikyle Louis, from his 14th delivery. A classic drive of Woakes' delivery, past mid-off and to the boundary for four.

He almost picks up another at backward point, but Ben Stokes chases the ball down having run a fair distance.

That looked good from where we are. That might be a mistake from Ben Stokes.

Oh. I told you we were a long way away...

This 14 is the most Kraigg Brathwaite has ever scored off his first 10 balls in a Test match.

  20. WI 18-0published at 4 overs

Four more for Brathwaite, cutting expansively to the deep third boundary.

Atkinson whacks him on the pad with his final delivery, the England players go into conference but Ben Stokes indicates with his hand there was an inside edge and they decide not to review.

Turns out there wasn't, but ball tracking shows it was sliding down leg.
