Tom Banton has done his job and he's looked calm. He came in at three which was a tactical move for England. He's someone who's earned the right to be back in this England team. He's shown great maturity so far in the game and now he's building a great partnership with Joe Root.

  3. 6 runs

    Eng 121-2published at 16.2 overs

Back under way and Tom Banton hits his second reverse-sweep six of the innings.

We told you he was a good player of spin...

  4. drinks break

    Drinks - Eng 115-2published at 16 overs

Need 242 runs to win from 34 overs

England are doing that thing they get criticised for not doing - nudging singles and hitting the bad balls for four. Joe Root is the latest to put the ball away when it arrives too full.

Time for drinks. England are positioned OK.

    Target 357

Tom Banton plays one of the shots of the day - sending Hardik Pandya through the covers on the drive.

That has just kept England ahead of the required run-rate. The worms had just started to converge in the past few overs.

Vincenzo Revived: Would love to know if it's the same people moaning about being over aggressive that complained about Burns and Sibley being 70-0 at lunch on day one of a Test. If the average emotional England fan was a selector everyone would have been picked and dropped by now.

England nudge three singles from Kuldeep Yadav's first over. That's probably wise. Kuldeep is elite.

Tom Banton's last ODI was against Ireland in Southampton during the pandemic. Ireland won (I remember the celebrations, socially distanced of course). Apart from him, only two England players are in the team today: Adil Rashid and Saqib Mahmood. Shows how much has changed since the Eoin Morgan era ended.

  9. dropped catch

    Eng 99-2published at 13 overs

    Target 357

    Almost a disaster for England!

Tom Banton has looked calm since that early edge but now he almost runs himself out.

He's still halfway down the pitch as Axar Patel collects but the spinner misses with a throw from only five yards or so.

South Africa have piled up 352-5 in their tri-series match against Pakistan in Karachi. Temba Bavuma, Matthew Breetzke and Heinrich Klaasen all fell in the 80s for the Proteas, who are hoping to reach the tri-series final against New Zealand. The scorecard for that match is here.

I feel like I want to send a big banner to Ahmedabad with the words 'don't go back to Axar Patel' written on it.

It makes my heart skip a beat every time.

Salt has the ability to be the next Bairstow or Roy in ODIs he just needs to learn a bit of patience and game management. We should definitely stick with him because he has the potential to be one of the best in the world at the top of the order.

    Banton 16, Root 5

Tom Banton has always been highly-rated. He wasn't terrible in his first spell in international cricket, but it didn't really click.

Bashing spinners in the ILT20 is one thing. Doing against India in front of 70,000 is another.

Was it a daft shot or an attacking shot played badly?

    One of life's conundrums.

Axar Patel whizzes through a maiden to Tom Banton to finish the powerplay.

Not sure why they continue with Salt. He's done absolutely nothing to warrant a place.

    Geoff

Standard Salt. England have a bit of momentum and he gives his wicket away playing a daft shot. Absolutely brain dead cricket again.

Joe Root gets off the mark with a textbook back-foot push. You'd think it would only be enough for a couple but he's timed it so well it's four.

Are there any better Englishmen for a crisis? He just makes me feel calm.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 8.4 overs

    Salt c Axar b Arshdeep 23 (Eng 80-2)

Soft. Phil Salt has done it again. Just as he was starting to turn the momentum in England's favour, he gets himself out.

It's a bouncer from Arshdeep Singh that Salt has tried to lift over the keeper.

The fact it's a slower ball means Salt only manages to loop the ball to backward point.
