It started well but in the end this was a tough start for England's new era in ODI cricket. They have been comprehensively outplayed by world champions Australia.

You can read all about it in my esteemed colleague Sam Drury's match report from Trent Bridge.

The second match is at Headingley on Saturday. That was begins at 11:00 BST.

In the meantime you can scroll down for all of the best clips and reaction as Australia go 1-0 up in this series.

We saw it in the World Cup, England have work to do on these types of pitches where it starts to hold up for the spinners. Most of the batters are still trying to hit and maybe they should take a lead out of Marnus Labuschagne's book. You do need that ability like Joe Root to knock it around like Joe Root does for ones and twos.

Player-of-the-match Travis Head, speaking at the presentation: "I got a bit lucky at the start. If you can get through there are a lot of runs on offer, especially here. It is nice I could contribute.

"I felt we did exceptional job to get it to 315 [with the ball]. It felt like it would be a few more. The start was tough. Jof had it moving around corners."

I think if he has his time again, in a few years' time as captain, Harry Brook might cringe a little bit at saying what he actually said. He gave a bad answer to a question about not minding being caught on the boundary.

I understand what he is trying to say. He's trying to give that message about taking the right option. Ultimately they have to be better at recognising the pitch they are on. They messed up from 200-2 and were not good enough with the bat.

More from Harry Brook on England's dismissals: "We are out there to score runs. If you get caught somewhere on the boundary or in the field then who cares? On another day that could go for six so I'm not too fussed about that.

"Obviously it was grabbing in the pitch but another day we hit them for six. They hit a few in the air and they landed safely so a little bit unlucky. We want to entertain like I have said a few times. Obviously we care but if you get out trying to score runs that's the way we want to play."

On captaincy: "It was good fun. Not the start we would have wanted but it's a five-match series"

Faced with a below-par target, Travis Head was supreme. He finished with 154 not out from 129 balls to led his side to victory in pursuit of 316 with 36 balls remaining.

He only really offered one chance, early on when he was on six, apart from that he flogged England's bowling.

Harry Brook, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "It probably went wrong at the toss when I batted first and it tuned out to be a belter. A tough night but we move forward. It's a five-game series and four more to go.

"Last night I was thinking about bowling first then changed my mind 20 minutes before the toss. Hindisght is a beautiful thing. You can't think too much into it.

"We probably didn't rotate spin well enough through the middle period. It's something I am working on personally as well. There were too many dot balls in the middle period. I felt we were in a good position in the halfway point. Under the lights at the end there it got better and they could hit through the ball easier."

We wondered at half-time whether the pitch had got more difficult, after Australia's spinners had tied down and dismissed England.

From 213-2, England lost eight wickets for 102 runs as they offered a series of catches to the deep. Australia did not bowl one over of pace after the 34th over.

    It was different but effective.

Harry Brook says he probably got it wrong at the toss, adding that it turned into a belter at the end.

He says he changed his mind 20 minutes before the toss.

"Hindsight is a beautiful thing," he says.

Liam Livingstone and Marnus Labuschagne are grinning as they shake hands. There's no bad blood after their words earlier.

Labuschagne hits the winning runs and it was his two wickets that changed the game earlier. England were 202-2 after 30 overs and ended up being bowled out for 315.

Australia are world champions in this format and they showed why in this match. I think you have to go back to the moment Marnus Labuschagne took key wickets as to where it started to go wrong for England.

England will look back at the 30-over mark and think they should have got more runs to put Australia under more pressure.

After another boundary takes Australia to the brink, the rueful smile on Harry Brook says it all.

It'll be a heavy defeat in his first match as England captain.

We saw an awful lot of Travis Head last summer and it's a reminder of what an excellent cricketer he is.

Another six. Another landmark for Travis Head. This time there's just a wave of a fist to the dressing room from the left-hander.

Is he in the top five batters in the world? Probably. Top three?

It's not had the same jeopardy which is why bilateral series are under such scrutiny. Would a tri-series help? You don't get your prize money by getting to the final etc so more on the line.

  19. Aus 295-3published at 42 overs

Need 21 runs from 48 balls

As Marnus Labuschagne thrashes a cut through the covers off Adil Rashid I can see people starting to drift away with the result certain.

Rashid's spell ends with no wickets from his 10 overs. I wasn't expecting that either. They've played him well.

While I wouldn't describe this particular England v Australia contest as 'friendly' it has not had any needle or angst in it at all.
