  2. Australia hit by illnesspublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 19 September

If you're wondering why Aaron Hardie is opening the bowling.... We mentioned at the top of the show, Australia's bowling line-up in particular is missing a few big names.

The Aussie camp has been hit by illness, ruling out Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood as well as all-rounder Glenn Maxwell.

"Starcy is ill, Maxi is ill and Hoff [Hazlewood] after his illness last week we are giving him another game to get right," captain Mitchell Marsh told BBC Sport earlier.

  3. Eng 1-0published at 0.2 overs

A hint of swing from Aaron Hardie as he sends one past a Phil Salt waft, then the England opener awkwardly works one into the leg side for a single.

It has been a bit of a low octane summer. This feels like it could be a nice end. England-Australia it doesn't matter when or where you play it.

Harry Brook will come from the Ben Stokes style of captaincy.

I am interesting in Brydon Carse. He could have all formats of the game. I would have half an eye on him sneaking into the Test team in a year's time.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer is playing his first one-day international since March 2023.

The 29-year-old has been carefully managed by England after elbow and back injuries in recent years.

Archer has been eased back in, playing exclusively T20 cricket since returning to the international fold before June's T20 World Cup.

Injury has limited Archer to just 21 ODI appearances with only seven of those coming since he played a starring role as England won the 2019 World Cup.

With an Ashes series in Australia now 14 months away, this is a significant step up for him.

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh, speaking to Sky Sports: "We were going to have a bowl so we are quite happy with that.

"The squad is good. We have had a bit of illness and people sore after T20s but that is international cricket.

"Australia v England is always pretty exciting."

The September weather was cited as a worry last summer as England ended the season with a rain-hit series against Ireland.

We were deprived off a decider in the T20 international series between Australia and England at Old Trafford on Sunday, but since then the sun has been cracking the flags.

The forecast looks pretty good for today so we should not have any interruptions.

England captain Harry Brook gave the coin a flick a couple of moments ago and Aussie counterpart Mitchell Marsh called heads.

It's come down a tail and Brook has decided to bat first.

The summer of five captains, then?

England somewhat infamously had four captains in the summer 1988 when Mike Gatting, John Emburey, Chris Cowdrey and Graham Gooch held the reins.

That was a rather ham-fisted reaction during a Test series hammering at the hands of West Indies.

Injury has been the factor this time as Harry Brook follows Phil Salt, Ollie Pope, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler in skippering England this summer.

How will Brook get on? We will find out over the next few hours. Welcome to live text commentary of the first ODI between England and Australia from Trent Bridge.
