Summary

But the innings changed when Ben Duckett got out.

Mitchell Marsh brought part-time spinner Marnus Labuschagne out and England's opener chipped a catch back to him for 95.

Harry Brook followed in similar fashion and when Jamie Smith offered a catch off another part-time spinner Matthew Short England's slide was well under way.

England certainly didn't have any trouble scoring early on.

After the early loss of Phil Salt, Ben Duckett and Will Jacks took the score to 168-1 in the 25th over before Jacks fell for 62 from 56 balls.

With its short boundaries, Trent Bridge is the highest scoring ground in England. At that point we were all thinking about a score around 400.

  3. Dew to be a deciding factor?published at 16:09 British Summer Time 19 September

Australia were feeling spin was harder to hit so I wonder if England will resort to that as well. The thing is the ball could skid on with the dew if it comes down. England are in the game but will feel like they have left some runs out there.

Anyone else still pretty optimistic? It's still a good score, and it's their part time spinners that did the damage - we have Adil Rashid!!

  5. 'Maybe it's the pitch'published at 16:05 British Summer Time 19 September

A very strange innings. The shots England took on felt like the right ones. When there's a collapse you normally think 'oh the wrong option' but they have played the right shots and not executed it well enough.

Maybe it's the pitch because top players don't mistime it that often on an absolute belter.

Did the pitch change? Were England just way ahead of the game after bashing the quicks around early on.

I was thinking England would score close to 400 when Ben Duckett and Will Jacks were batting with the score 213-2 in the 32nd over.

Rashid picked out the man absolutely perfectly. That will go down as a golden duck but quite an unlikely one caught down at long on.

  8. How's stat?!published at 15:59 British Summer Time 19 September

That's the first time Australia have ever bowled spin throughout the final 10 overs.

After the 24th over there was only one over seam in the innings.

    Rashid c Labuschagne b head 0 (Eng 315)

Gone first ball! That's it. England are bowled out for 315 in 49.4 overs.

A bizarre innings ends much like the rest of the second half - Adil Rashid skying a catch off Australia's part-time spinner.

Three balls remain as Adil Rashid, the highest ODI run-scorer in this England XI, skips out...

    Bethell c Labuschagne b Head 35 (Eng 315-9)

Another drag-down. Another catch in the deep.

Jacob Bethell has to go for a decent 35.

  12. Eng 315-8published at 49.2 overs

A big swing from Bethell and... edged for four.

    They all count.

  13. 6 runs

    Eng 311-8published at 49.1 overs

A wide is followed by a slog sweep for six from Jacob Bethell.

Can he punish Travis Head here?

A disappointing finish for Adam Zampa after being hoisted for six by Matthew Potts.

    Right. One over to go.

Jacob Bethell twiddles his bat. It's going to be spin again...

  16. 6 runs

Smashed for six by Matthew Potts! England needed that.

  17. Eng 298-8published at 48.5 overs

A lot is happening but that's four dot balls in a row from Adam Zampa...

  18. Not outpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 19 September

Going over! I didn't see that coming.

    It's a dot ball, however.

No bat involved. It could be hitting the stumps but umpire's call.
