Michael Pepper tries to pull a ball from Jamie Overton, but it's more of an uncontrolled swish and a top edge is taken by Sam Curran at backward square.
Tea will be taken with the Essex first innings coming to an end - and we will then see what their seamers can get out of this pitch.
Pepper batted superbly in his 94-ball knock to push the total past 200 as the visitors added 114 after lunch for their last six wickets.
Nathan Smith was the most successful Surrey bowler with 3-53 and there were two wickets each for the returning Curran and Overton.

Yorks v Notts 178-5

Notts have dug in well here and, with Joe Clarke and Lyndon James walking off unbeaten with a 57 partnership for the sixth wicket it is a frustrated Yorkshire attack at tea.
After putting in the league leaders the hosts did more than enough on a very helpful pitch to take at least eight or nine wickets but with a combination of luck and good judgment Notts are still going.
Not strong, perhaps, but still going.

Durham 227-8 v Somerset

Somerset's session as they take five wickets for 131.
With Ollie Robinson and Colin Ackermann going well with the score 161-4, Durham would've fancied a total beyond 250.
But when Robinson went for 52 and Ackermann for 30, things slid away.
This pitch hasn't offered the batting benevolence Alex Lees would've hoped for when he won the toss so, as always, true judgement will come after Somerset have had a go.
They're two wickets away from starting that.

Perfect delivery for a tail-ender as Nathan Smith flicks the top of Kasun Rajitha's off stump and Essex lose their ninth wicket.
Good effort by the Sri Lankan, who faced 22 balls from the best seam attack on the county circuit in support of Michael Pepper.
Smith has 3-53 as Jamie Porter comes out to bat.

A first wicket for Hampshire and it is the easiest slip catch you could dream of.
Angled in by Kyle Abbott and it leaves hte in-form Tom Haines off the pitch and sails straight into the waiting hands of Tom Prest at first slip.

Michael Pepper gets away with a wild mow outside off stump as a top edge flies away for four.

A New Zealand one-two does for the Pears old boy.
Ed Barnard has been in such outstanding touch for Warwickshire and would've been desperate for a score back on his old manor but he's gone for a blob.
It's a beauty from Jacob Duffy - angling in and moving a fraction away off the seam. Barnard instinctively jabs at it and edges into the stomach of Henry Nicholls at first slip, who falls backwards as he hold on with both hands.

Yorks v Notts 171-5

Dom Bess is into the attack as Yorkshire bring the pace down.
Notts were in bother at 121-5 but Lyndon James and Joe Clarke have strethced this to a half century partnership.
Clarke was inches away from edging Jordan Thompson to Finlay Bean at third slip but it just didn't carry.

Jamie Overton will have seen plenty of that in the IPL but it won't make it any less frustrating....
A full length delivery is ramped fine for four by Michael Pepper - an audacious stroke but it pays off.

Excellent session for Derbyshire. who add 125 runs in 33 overs without losing a wicket.
Caleb Jewell and Harry Came have added 132 since David Lloyd's dismissal for 50 by Nathan Gilchrist towards the end of the morning.
Jewell is 93 not out - is this the day he achieves a maiden hundred for the county? - with Came on 59.

Magnificent. Michael Pepper lofts Jamie Overton over long-on for six.
He is far less in control of that one and only connects with thin air as he goes for a big drive.

Lancashire were rocked by a double blow losing the reasonably well-set George Bell and Matty Hurst in three deliveries to go 147-6.
But George Balderson and Tom Hartley had the right idea in not trying to blast their way out of trouble.
The pair had stuck it out for a couple of overs but Balderson has been undone by a turning ball from Tom Scriven.
