England captain Harry Brook speaking to Test Match Special: "At the end of the day that's the way we want to play cricket. We put pressure on with the bat and the bowling speaks for itself.

"If you erase that first game it's 1-1, and we're very happy with the way we played that game. We're looking forward to taking that forward."

On Jacob Bethell: "That's just the beginning - I said that to him at lunch. Everyone knows how good he is, I'm glad he's got that first century, and hopefully now the floodgates open."

On Jofra Archer: "Everyone knows how good he is, he's bowling nearly 90mph a ball. He's hard to face, a very good bowler and awesome to have in the side."

On scheduling: "It would have been nice to have a break before the first game but unfortunately that's the schedule and we can't do anything about it."

Ahead of the T20 games: "We've got a very good side and we can take confidence going into the T20, we're going to play a similar way and we're looking forward to that ahead of the T20 World Cup next year."

  3. 'Poor game of cricket from us' - Bavumapublished at 18:07 BST 7 September

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma speaking to Test Match Special:

On his injury: "It’s a bit sore. It's far from ideal but just another case I have to deal with. I’ll know what’s happened when we get home."

On a bad day for South Africa: "Yeah a downer. We were just poor to be honest - in all departments. Our fielding really let us down. Fielding is always about attitude, and looking at our fielding and some of the catches you could question where our attitude is. With the ball at some point something went horribly wrong. The extras as well with the ball, far from ideal. With the bat it was always going to be tough, and their bowlers really put us under pressure, Archer and Carse, we didn’t have a chance.

"To sum it up - a poor game of cricket from us."

On motivation for a dead-rubber: "I think as an international sportsman you can’t use that as an excuse - every game you’re playing for your country. There have been changes within our team with players rested so our depth has been tested. We had a debutant coming in, and for those guys it shows how much of a step up it is for international cricket - we have conversations about our depth and when premium players aren’t there, because it takes a squad to go and win trophies."

On South Africa moving forward: "I think we are moving forward, we are taking positive strides forward, the team is shaping up nicely. I think looking at the way we were against Australia, we are starting to answer those question marks about our team."

England captain Harry Brook: "The ultimate performance. We were awesome with the bat, put them under pressure all the way through that innings and the bowling just speaks for itself, really.

"Yeah, definitely [a blueprint for the team's batting]. If we get in on good surfaces like that there's no reason why we can't get 400-450 each time we bat with our line-up. We've got seven top-order batters, it's the blueprint and the template we want to use going forward.

"Jacob is very good against spin and especially against left-arm spin so it means they have to hold one of their main threats back longer. It's something we'll probably keep doing in the future but not necessarily every game.

"Joe and Jos have been doing that for years now. Rooty is phenomenal, just amazing to play alongside and then Jos can take any team apart.

"It was awesome to see Jofra bowling rockets there. To have that in your side, it's quite frightening."

Everyone enjoys a good drop, don't they?

Well, maybe not Matthew Breetzke and the South African team.

Opener Jamie Smith was put down for 23 and England on 68-1, and that rather set the tone for the tourists' afternoon.

Player of the series, South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj: "I feel like all the hard work is coming to fruition. There are still a lot of things I can improve in my own game but it's always good to keep contributing to winning performances.

"The three venues were all very different, today obviously the toughest of them! I just tried to use my angles and variations around the crease. It could've gone a bit better today but kudos to the England batters.

"When we are at full strength we have got good experience and good pace with the ball. It's not quite back to the drawing board, there are plenty of positives for us to take. We have beaten England 2-1 in their home conditions after a long time, it is super special."

Player of the match Jofra Archer: "Before I had even bowled a ball, I thought it was going to be difficult because we had just got 400 on the board so you know it's a good batting surface.

"I don't think it did anything different, though. I just tried to hit the pitch hard and bowl straight and that's it. Sometimes, you're going to bowl well and come out with nothing like at Headingley then some days you'll get some like today. It can be a monopoly with bowling.

"I just keep doing what I do for my team. Even if you have a bad day, you've still got to keep going. In the end, I did all right in the series but it's all about the team.

"I'm feeling good. I didn't think I would play this one, in the past it would've been like workload management but getting to play three games in a row, that means a lot."

  8. 'I don't listen to what people say' - Bethellpublished at 17:46 BST 7 September

Jacob Bethell speaking with Daniel Norcross after hitting his first international century: "It feels pretty good. A few emotions pouring through, but it feels unbelievable and to do it, and in a convincing win like that it's even more important"

On whether he feels relief: "I wouldn't say relief, I don't listen to what people say to be honest. It was nothing to do with other people - I wanted it for myself and the team. It was a great feeling, an addicting feeling and hopefully more to come."

On partnership with Joe Root: "It's very special. He's so calm out there and runs you through the gears. His dad and my dad play cricket together so it's cool we can play cricket together for England."

On the result: "You don't get those days too often - it was the perfect performance. The only thing that wasn't perfect was not taking 10 wickets because there was an injury! But that shows what we can do."

  9. Postpublished at 17:44 BST 7 September

South Africa were chasing a monumental target of 415, after three England batters made big scores.

Opener Jamie Smith struck 62, Joe Root exactly 100 and Jacob Bethell 110, his first professional century.

PCA ODI player of the summer, Joe Root: "It was good, it was just key to put partnerships together on that kind of surface. There was some wind going across the ground so myself and Beth [Jacob Bethell] made sure one of us was making the most of that. Once you get 100 partnerships together, it's hard to slow the game down when you're not taking wickets and we took advantage of that really well."

On his partnership with Jacob Bethell: "There wasn't much helping going on, he knew exactly what he was doing. He is wise beyond his years. He is very clear on how he wants to play his cricket and he's got wonderful options of where he wants to take the bowlers down and against different bowling types.

"I'm so pleased for him, I've known him for a long time now so to play an innings like that was fantastic. Hopefully he will go from strength to strength, keep entertaining and keep playing match-winning knocks for England like that in the future."

On his summer generally: "More than anything, as soon as you start feeling content with where you're at, you will get caught out. Everyone will catch up with you so it's important to keep looking to get better, to keep improving and adding to your game. The more you play, the more information there is on you and the opposition can use that against you. So you've got to keep looking to get better but also using that experience.

"I'll keep working on little things, tinkering here and there. It's been fun and I think today is a glimpse of what this team is capable of in this format. The more we play together, the more games we get under our belt then we will get more comfortable and we will see more results like today."

  11. Amazing Archerpublished at 17:38 BST 7 September

Jofra Archer finished with figures of 4-18 off nine overs with three wicket-maidens.

A super showing from him, bowling at high pace, smacking the ball into batters' bodies or jagging the ball past their edges.

That's the name of the game - winning the series.

Yes South Africa will look at this and say they didn't perform very well, but after what they did at Headingley and holding on at Lords, they will definitely take a 2-1 win.

What it does show is that sides now, if you get going batting, you can be hard to stop.

The power in batting can be unrelenting and unstoppable.

South Africa have won the series, and it's been a weird series in that you've had one totally one-sided game at Headingley, another here at Southampton and then a thriller at Lord's.

How can one side win so emphatically at Leeds, then get slaughtered here?

Maybe it's to do with scheduling and tired minds, but it's a bit of a pity really.

But it was always on the cards. Once you get past 350, the opposition can have hopelessness creep in and it all ends in a bit of an ugly mess.

And that's it - England win by a record margin in men's one-day internationals!

Adil Rashid finishes the clean-up of the tail with his third consecutive wicket - Corbin Bosch goes for a reverse sweep and gets too much air on it, with a leaping Brydon Carse taking the catch at backward point.

With Temba Bavuma unable to bat the teams are shaking hands with England taking a consolation victory in remarkable fashion as they lose the series 2-1.

England had almost wrapped up the win from the previous delivery, with Ben Duckett not managing to hold onto a tough chance off Bosch, diving to his right at mid-wicket.

South Africa are now past their lowest ODI total after Jofra Archer concedes a wide.

The England seamer, who is bowling his ninth over, then lands one on Corbin Bosch's forearm.

The batter, who didn't play a shot, doesn't react - he is wearing an arm guard, mind.

  18. SA 69-8published at 19 overs

A third four for Corbin Bosch, smacking Adil Rashid through long-on.

A further two into the covers takes South Africa level with their lowest ODI score.
