There are a lot of ifs here, but there quietly is a scenario where Chris Dobey could give himself a real chance of finishing in the top four.

To do so, he could really do with a night win today and first on his card, he takes on Stephen Bunting in a battle of the bottom two.

However, should Dobey beat Bunting and win the semi-final battle with Luke Humphries and then go on to beat Gerwyn Price or Luke Littler in the final, he would claim the maximum five points.

That would take Dobey from 12 to 17 points for the season, up from seventh to sixth and only three points off the top four with two weeks to spare.

    Bunting v Dobey

Chris Dobey talking to Sky Sports: "I still believe my game is up there if I can produce the finishing I am capable of. Tonight is a tough game, we're both fighting.

"You learn every game you play. I am still learning but I am not out of it. There is something still there and I believe I can turn the corner."

The last quarter-final of the night could well be a cracker with bottom two Stephen Bunting and Chris Dobey under very little pressure.

Dobey might still be clinging on to hopes of winning the next three weeks to make it to the O2, for Bunting, even that might not be enough.

Disappointed as they may be by how their Premier League seasons have gone, both will be keen to finish strong - if for no other reason than to show that they're worthy of returning to the competition next year.

Michael van Gerwen could have really done with a victory there. He and Nathan Aspinall, sitting a point apart in fourth and fifth, seem to be the two best chances of taking the final place at Finals Night.

Victories for Luke Humphries, Luke Littler and Gerwyn Price have made it three wins from three for those at the top of the table.

    Result: Van Gerwen 4-6 Humphries

Michael van Gerwen will end the evening in the top four - but only one point above Nathan Aspinall.

It was a disappointing showing from the Dutchman, averaging 92.08 with a pair of 180s. Even an impressive 57.1% checkout percentage wasn't enough to make up for his below-par scoring.

Meanwhile, Luke Humphries averaged 98.89 with four 180s and was 37.5% on the doubles.

He's averaged far higher and lost in recent weeks so he'll take the win.

Luke Humphries so nearly won it in style but misses the second double 18 for a 129 out.

But Michael van Gerwen misses two at double 16 for 5-5 and Humphries comes back to book his place in the semi-finals.

That win also means he'll be at the O2 for finals night as well.

    Van Gerwen 4-5 Humphries

Luke Humphries is a leg from victory after a 13-darter of his own.

Dominant leg for the world number one. It begins with a 180, there's a 140 in there as well and he seals it on double 16.

  15. Postpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 8 May

    Van Gerwen 4-4 Humphries

Comfortable hold for Michael van Gerwen.

This time he benefits from a Luke Humphries bounce out, although the Dutchman was in control anyway.

    Tops for a 13-darter.

    Van Gerwen 3-4 Humphries

The small details can make a big difference.

A bounce out costs Michael van Gerwen a 180 and buoyed by that Luke Humphries hits a maximum of his own to leave 46.

He calmly takes that out on his next visit to go back in front.

Michael van Gerwen's hopes of a win tonight may well rest on that last leg.

Luke Humphries had four chances to go 4-1 up and did not take any of them.

A pounce on double four is exactly what Mighty Mike needed after a poor start.

  20. MVG breaks backpublished at 20:42 British Summer Time 8 May

    Van Gerwen 2-3 Humphries

Well, it's Luke Humphries's turn to look bemused now.

He was in complete control of the leg, starting with a 180, but misses four darts to go 4-1 up but can't take them.

Michael van Gerwen can't believe his luck and breaks back with a double four for a 15-darter.
