Far from a vintage display from Michael van Gerwen but he reels off five legs in a row to beat Peter Wright.

That is a big win in his bid to secure a top-four place. Putting just a bit more of a gap between himself and Michael Smith in fifth.

Peter Wright 3-5 Michael van Gerwen

That early conviction and confidence from Peter Wright has short-lived.

Michael van Gerwen snapped out of the funk he was in and, despite still not being at his best, Wright has not been able to keep up.

It's been an improvement from last week but Snakebite looks to be heading for another defeat.

Peter Wright 3-4 Michael van Gerwen

Peter Wright had the chance to break again immediately but is way off with a dart at double 12.

That lets Michael van Gerwen back in, two darts for 66. Clinical on that occasion and he edges ahead after winning a third leg in a row.

The biggest cheer of the leg comes when Stephen Bunting is shown on the big screen, though.

A high-quality leg with Michael van Gerwen hitting tops with his 12 dart to get the hold.

Peter Wright v Michael van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen talking to Sky Sports: "I still think it is a marathon, there are four really long weeks ahead and anything can happen. You need to make sure that you don't ruin the points for yourself. I am still in a good position, but of course I need more points."

Peter Wright does his bit to get the crowd on side as his usual walk-on song cuts out a few seconds in and is replaced by Yellow Submarine.

Not The Beatles song I'd have chosen but there you are...

No messing around from Michael van Gerwen. Seven Nation Army. His named chanted boisterously to the tune. It never fails.

It was painful to watch Peter Wright last week. You can't suffer through that sort of match and iffiness. He just couldn't get anything together and he had a bit of a panic.

This is a new week and he does tend to chop and change quite a lot.

Michael van Gerwen had the backing of just about everybody in attendance last week in Rotterdam but those fans were left disappointed when he lost to Luke Humphries in the quarter-finals.

He will want to bounce back this week, especially after dropping to fourth in the table, just two points ahead of Michael Smith in fifth.

Up against a horribly out of sorts Peter Wright, tonight in Liverpool should give him a good chance to make his play-off place more secure.

As for Wright, just two Premier League wins all year tells the story.

It has been tough to watch at times as the two-time world champion has really struggled for form.

His play-off hopes are over but he can play the spoiler and regaining some form at this stage would be a big win for the Scot.

That result means Luke Littler stays top and Nathan Aspinall is now just a point behind Luke Humphries.

Littler and Aspinall meet in the semis.

  20. Postpublished at 20:03 British Summer Time 25 April

Result: Luke Humphries 2-6 Nathan Aspinall

Statistically, that match was quite close...

Nathan Aspinall averaged 102.14 to Luke Humphries' 99.11, with two 180s to the world champion's one.

On the doubles, though, The Asp was brilliant. He was six of eight - his only two misses coming immediately before his winning dart.

Humphries was two of nine, most of those missing coming in a single leg that he eventually won.
