A fairly level start to this opening leg.
On his throw, Van Gerwen gets six darts at a finish, but his first visit of 69 was not what he was after when on 150.
On his second visit, he does take out 81, going treble 19, 12, double six.
An 18-dart leg, but the win is more important for Mighty Mike.

Both players are out ahead of this final and although we've seen a bit more of a reserved Luke Littler tonight, he does smile a bit more on his entry ahead of this one, more so when Michael van Gerwen arrives at the oche.
Littler could become the third player this season to win three consecutive Premier League nights this season after Van Gerwen and Luke Humphries.

It was hard work for Michael van Gerwen. He deserved the win but he was getting frustrated at times.
It was key that he got something tonight.

Van Gerwen came out on top but averaged little over 93 to win that match, with Smith not managing to average 90.
Only one maximum in that match, coming from Van Gerwen and Smith, who had the chance to break into the top four tonight, missed 10 of his 14 checkout attempts.
Van Gerwen was much more prolific on doubles, taking out 54.5% of his attempted finishes.

Van Gerwen had the chance to win 6-3 on his throw, but Bully Boy isn't going down without a battle.
Left on a 107 checkout, the first dart into treble 19 gave him two options. He went down the single 10 and double 20 route and executes it perfectly.

Michael Smith knows he has to hold his throw to even create an opportunity of a break. He is constantly under pressure and he is not at his fluent best.

The standard of this game feels like it has dipped somewhat but there are almost two big finishes.
Van Gerwen narrowly misses out on 120 before Michael Smith finds treble 20 twice and then 25, going for the big fish of 170.
Van Gerwen comes back for double 10 and in two darts, finishes there to go 4-3 up.

What we're seeing from Micahel van Gerwen now is a sign of the struggles he had early in his win over Nathan Aspinall earlier, where he did not look capable of winning the match before turning it around.
Smith pounces on a leg where Van Gerwen struggles from the off, but on a 121 finish, pulls his shot at bull low. A missed chance.
