Just 18 minutes into the cycling competition at the 2024 Paralympics, and we already had our first world record.

Caroline Groot of the Netherlands broke her own record in the women's C5 500m time trial with 35.390 seconds - shaving more than 0.2secs off the time she set in Tokyo.

GB's Kadeena Cox completed her qualifying time trial in 35.436 seconds - second overall.

It could well be a Cox v Groot shoot-out for gold - a fine curtain-raiser for the medal action in these Games.

There was delight for the noisy French crowd too as Marie Patouillet qualified third fastest for the final.

The 33-year-old set a lifetime best of 34.812 to win gold in Tokyo three years ago.

The Netherlands' Caroline Groot, world record holder in the women's C5 500m time trial, qualified fastest for the final.

Because of the different classifications, a factor will be applied to each competitor's final time.

New Zealand's Nicole Murray gets the racing under way, setting the early pace by crossing the line in 37.425.

  12. What is the C4-5 500m time trial?published at 14:44 British Summer Time 29 August

Just like other para sports, athletes in the para-cycling events are divided up into a number of classifications.

Track cyclists ride either tandem bicycles (B) or the more traditional form of bicycle (C) with those C1-5 athletes with a physical impairment impacting the upper and/or lower limbs.

C1 athletes have the most severe limitation while C5 athletes will meet the minimum impairment criteria.

For example, an athlete with a double leg amputation would compete in the C3 class, while an athlete with a single leg amputation would compete a class higher in C4.

In this women's C4-5 time trial event, athletes will be timed separately over 500m with the fastest taking gold.

Great Britain's Kadeena Cox took gold in this event in both Rio and Tokyo.

We’ve seen Kadeena Cox compete at two Paralympics and seen her come away with two golds in Tokyo and Rio, not just in cycling but on the track as well.

To get that medal [run] started and to get the gold medals under way is always great. When you’re part of the team, to see athletes get medals, you want to be part of it. It inspires the whole team and gets the team motivated. They want to be on the podium as well.

I know she’s battling injury but that would be great.

    Emma Smith
BBC Sport at Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines National Velodrome

Welcome to the velodrome, where it is approximately one billion degrees celsius.

Temperatures are kept high in the arena as warm air is less dense than cold, allowing cyclists to move just a little bit quicker as they are encountering less resistance.

This saw several world records smashed during the Olympics, and we have already seen more fall during these Paralympics...

Kadeena Cox is one of Great Britain's most well-known Paralympians.

A four-time gold medallist, she entered para sport in 2015 after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Cox, 33, made history in Rio winning golds in both para cycling and para athletics, before winning two more golds on the track in Tokyo.

In recent weeks, she has spoken of competing being the "easy bit" because all the hard work of training has been done.

In Paris, she is focusing solely on para cycling, but has not had the easiest build-up, having experienced a calf injury and a relapse of multiple sclerosis.

Despite this, earlier this year, she defended her world title in the C4 500m time trial at the Para-cycling Track World Championships in Rio.

Since the last Games, she has also appeared on ITV's I'm a Celebrity... and received an OBE.
