Jason Holt feels Rangers have "a really good squad"

Rangers' latest signing, Jason Holt, believes victory over Hibernian could set the tone for the season.

The two Scottish Championship sides meet in Saturday's Challenge Cup first-round tie at Easter Road.

"If we can do that (win), that would be great and it sets us up nicely," said Holt, 22.

Meanwhile, the ex-Hearts man declined to comment on the prospect of Hibs' Scott Allan joining Rangers, other than acknowledging he was a "good player".

The Ibrox club have had a £175,000 bid for the midfielder rejected.

Holt, who has signed a three-year contract, believes the Rangers squad is in good shape for their first competitive match under Mark Warburton, despite a lack of pre-season friendlies and the number of new signings.

Warburton, who took over from Stuart McCall last month, has signed six other players during the close season.

Goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, defenders James Tavernier, Rob Kiernan and Danny Wilson, midfielder Andy Halliday and forward Martyn Waghorn have all come in.

"We want to go there on Saturday and win the game and try to set the tone," said Holt of Saturday's contest in Edinburgh.

"The boys have had three games, but also the intensity of training has been great as well. The boys are raring to go."

Rangers were strong favourites to win last year's Championship title but finished the season well off the pace in third, behind Holt's former club and Saturday's opponents, who they defeated in the play-off semi-final.

Holt acknowledged that being favourites and arguably the strongest squad did not guarantee promotion.

"We've got a really good squad here, but I think hard work, togetherness and a real team morale [are required] and so far, since I've been in, I've seen all of them," added Holt.
