While we wait for Dan Burn, here is a reminder of that the format for World Cup qualifying in Europe has changed, with more groups – and smaller ones than before.

There will be 12 qualifying groups. Teams will play each other home and away as usual.

The top team from each group qualifies automatically for the World Cup, with the runners-up going into the play-offs against four teams that performed well in the Nations League.

Four of the 16 play-off teams will qualify for the tournament.

Tuchel 'keeping Spence in mind for the future'published at 10:54 Greenwich Mean Time

Mike: Hi Phil, whereas I can understand Thomas Tuchel wanting to get balance and depth in the squad and also choosing some older players just for level headedness, but are you as surprised by some of the choices as the rest of us? For example, I know Tottenham have not shrouded themselves in glory this season but Djed Spence has literally held the back line by himself and still hasn’t got a call up. What does a player need to do to get in this squad? Surely if you are taking players from poorer leagues, you’d want a defender who is showing great form in the most competitive league in the world?

Hello, Mike. I mentioned Djed Spence as one player I thought was very unlucky not to get a call-up given his form this season.

Obviously, Thomas Tuchel has trusted in experience - Kyle Walker, who is on loan at AC Milan but past his best after a superb career; Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento, and Reece James, who is still on his way back from injury but is a player he knows from when he won the Champions League at Chelsea.

I hope and believe Tuchel has had a look at Spence and is keeping him in mind for the future.

'It is the adjustment to the extra pressure and scrutiny'published at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time

    Phil McNulty

Steve D, Cheltenham: What are the biggest challenges moving from club football to international football for managers and players?

Morning, Steve. I think for managers or coaches it is the adjustment to only dealing with players during international camps. Thomas Tuchel spoke about “missing the smell of the grass” and how he could not wait to get back on the training pitch.

For players, it is the adjustment to the extra pressure and scrutiny of international football, the weight of the shirt as they say, as they move out of the comfort of the club environment, and the increase in quality when they meet the best teams.

Chelsea fan here, I like Tuchel and think he will do a good job for England but I’d like to see him pick his squads on merit. There’s no way on recent form that Cole Palmer should have been included, so with his “mystery” injury it seems that justice has prevailed with Morgan Gibbs-White stepping up. Send out the correct message to the fringe players.

Eddie Howe with the Carabao Cup trophyImage source, Getty Images

Mick: With Newcastle United maintaining their push for Champions League qualification, and making it to a second League Cup final in three years, surely winning at Wembley must count as the "major trophy" that the FA were looking for in their search for Gareth Southgate's successor. The Magpies manager certainly has a strong track record delivering results in the Premier League, so has winning the Carabao Cup finally qualified Eddie Howe for the England manager's job?

Hello, Mick. Of course the Carabao Cup is a major trophy and everything Eddie Howe has done at Newcastle United marks him down as a future - probably the next - England manager.

I was surprised there was not more of a push for him by the FA last time, but they clearly made a decision to go with the best available coach with a track record of success, irrespective of nationality. And, in their eyes, that was Thomas Tuchel.

The England job represents a first international post for Thomas Tuchel.

The 51-year-old German head coach has earned a raft of honours as a club manager, winning the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, two Ligue 1 titles with Paris St-Germain and the Champions League with Chelsea.

He has signed an 18-month contract as Three Lions boss, which will take him up to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Phil McNulty has been asked about the challenges of making that transition from club to international management, but in reference to the potential for Newcastle's Carabao Cup-winning coach Eddie Howe being a possible replacement for Tuchel in the future...

Presenter on BBC Monday Night Club

For anyone who was not aware, Dan Burn scored the opening goal of Newcastle's 2-1 victory over Liverpool in Sunday's Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

That came in the same week that the 32-year-old Blyth-born defender was called up to the senior men's England squad for the first time.

BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Mark Chapman put Burn's dream week into further context when he stressed the significance of his goal against Liverpool in the latest episode of the Monday Night Club.

"They hadn't even scored a goal at Wembley for 25 years. Rob Lee was the last person to score a goal at Wembley (for Newcastle United). It was scored by a local lad who is a Newcastle fan and is one of the first players brought back under Eddie Howe - in the week he gets called up to the England squad and he is 32."

@Chrisgill95 on X: Some of Tuchel’s choices in his first squad were mind-boggling, but what is even more ludicrous is the suggestion Jordan Pickford won’t be his number one keeper. Surely Tuchel won’t be stupid enough to change for change’s sake?

Hello, Chris. It would be a huge shock should Tuchel decide to change his keeper. And in my opinion a very big mistake.

Jordan Pickford has been outstanding and consistent for England – and Everton – for so many years and has always delivered big performances on the big occasions under Gareth Southgate.

I actually do not believe he has any serious rivals as England’s number one keeper. I do not see any current grounds on which that should change.

Allow me to save you the next seven days of live chat: England will beat Albania 3-0, Tuchel will be the second coming, then we'll struggle to a 2-1 win over Latvia with the winning goal coming from a dodgy penalty in the 86th minute following a rubbish performance and the fans will pile into the comments sections asking bitterly why we're not already the best side in the world with all the players we've got.

Former England striker Alan Shearer told BBC Match of the Day that Morgan Gibbs-White was "very unlucky" to miss out on the initial England squad.

"When you look at his performances this season he is one of the standout performers in that Nottingham Forest squad," said Shearer.

"If he keeps on playing the way he is then there is no doubt he will be in England squads in the future."

Maybe Alan didn't expect his words to be proved right quite so soon.

Initially Morgan Gibbs-White was missing out on Thomas Tuchel's first England camp, but late on Sunday it was announced that the Nottingham Forest forward would be joining the England senior team.

Gibbs-White has been in fine form for high-flying Nottingham Forest having 12 goal involvements in the Premier League this season.

The big question off the back of Gibbs-White's call-up - where is Cole Palmer?

Palmer did not feature for Chelsea against Arsenal at the weekend after having a "muscular problem" and Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said "I don't think [he will be fit for England] to be honest".

The Chelsea frontman has not featured in any of England's media posts and did not train yesterday, but there has been no official announcement on Palmer's exclusion.

Matt, Birmingham: Is the return of Rashford to the England team surprising? As a Villa fan I've been impressed with his attitude, but he still seems a bit off his best.

Good morning, Matt. I was a little surprised because I thought Marcus Rashford would have had to do more over more games to win an England recall, but there is no doubt he has played well and had an impact since he joined Aston Villa on loan.

And remember, coaches and managers have preferences for players and Thomas Tuchel has never made any secret of his admiration for Marcus Rashford.

He said he had “a strong feeling” he should pick him and has praised him in the past when Manchester United played Paris St-Germain.

Sometimes managers go with a gut feeling and this is what Tuchel has done here, as well as on the performances he has witnessed. It is certainly great news for Rashford and Villa. Tuchel will hope it is the same for England.
