    South Shields 0-3 Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury's Mal Benning, who remember turns 32 today, goes down following a challenge from Will Jenkins, who appears to lead with his arm and it looks a bit of a nasty one.

    No free-kick given, however.

Well, I've heard of birthday bumps...

  2. SECOND-HALF RESUMESpublished at 13:07 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-3 Shrewsbury

We are back underway at the First Cloud Arena!

We have had a change at the break too. Paul Blackett has been withdrawn for the hosts and David Carson is on to replace him.

What we have seen is that the strike force for Shrewsbury, when they've got the time to finish, they'll finish. When they're in and around the box they come alive. That's the quality of Football League players.

I'm a bit disappointed because we've seen South Shields play their football but you've got to keep the back end shut as well.

The penalty was nothing, he's just shoved him and that's given Shrewsbury the lift.

Let's see if they can come out, get a goal, and give the crowd something to shout about because 3-0 at half-time will be a disappointed dressing room.

  4. 'Professional performance needed in the second half'published at 13:03 GMT 2 November

So far so good for Shrewsbury.

It was worry in the first 15 minutes, South Shields where really, really confident, comfortable on the ball. They played some really nice football across the back and worked the ball well through the middle of the park. Then they worked it wide, but Shrewsbury dealt with that, just about.

The penalty settled Shrewsbury down a lot, then they got the ball and broke as a team, got the two goals. You could sense the atmosphere around the ground and that's exactly what Shrewsbury needed to do.

A real professional performance needed in the second half just to shut out the attacking threat from South Shields.

Half-time and Michael Appleton's side go into the break three goals clear.

The home side started on the front foot but didn't take their chances with the match goalless.

They were made to pay the ultimate penalty by their league opposition after a tight opening 23 minutes.

Two goals from Anthony Scully, the first from the penalty spot and the second a terrific poacher's finish, was added to by Tom Sang just before the break.

If there is to be a Cup upset today, it doesn't look like it is going to be in the early kick-off on Tyneside, folks.

  6. YELLOW CARDpublished at 12:51 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-3 Shrewsbury

Dillon Morse becomes the first man in the book for the hosts for a bad foul on Anthony Scully just before the break.

    South Shields 0-3 Shrewsbury

Caden Kelly again tries to get down to the line but great defending from Shrewsbury's Ismeal Kabia means the ball goes out for a goal-kick.

The Arsenal loanee has had an impressive first 45 minutes.

It's brilliant again from Shrewsbury, it's just breaking with purpose, with pace and aggression.

Tom Sang has put it into the roof of the net - it's away from the keeper, it's a perfect finish.

That's exactly what they need to be doing, stamping their authority on the non-league side.

  9. Postpublished at 12:48 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-3 Shrewsbury

Since his yellow card, Shrewsbury captain John Marquis has committed two more fouls - I'll be surprised if we see him after half-time.

Meanwhile, we are into four minutes of additional time at the end of the first half.

    Tom Sang (43 mins)

Is that game over before half-time?

On the counter-attack, Anthony Scully looks to claim a first-half hat-trick but when his shot is well saved by the feet of keeper Jasper Sheik, the ball falls to the feet of Tom Sang who finds the roof of the net with the rebound.

It's a long way back now for the Mariners.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 12:42 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-2 Shrewsbury

A naughty one from John Marquis, who stands on the heel of Robbie Tinkler, and becomes the first man in the referee's book.

  12. Postpublished at 12:40 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-2 Shrewsbury

That is harsh on South Shields who, in terms of the occasion, have been more than a match for their league opposition in this first half, but they have not been clinical enough and have been given a lesson on finishing by the visitors.

  13. 'A real body blow'published at 12:40 GMT 2 November

Anthony Scully done really well to get in there, it's a proper striker's goal.

That's a real body blow for South Shields.

They need a goal, they get a goal then they are back in the game.

  14. Postpublished at 12:39 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-2 Shrewsbury

At first glance, it was hard to tell who got the last touch to that one, if it was Anthony Scully or South Shields defender Cain Sykes.

Replays suggest Scully got his foot in between Sykes' legs to get the telling touch.

    A terrific poacher's goal.

  15. 'A really good goal'published at 12:38 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-2 Shrewsbury

    Jamie Tolley
Former Shrewsbury player on BBC Radio Shropshire

It's a really good goal - the first time Shrewsbury have got the ball down and played some football.

It's a great ball in and a great run from Anthony Scully.

  16. goal

GOAL: South Shields 0-2 Shrewsburypublished at 12:34 GMT 2 November

    Anthony Scully (34 mins)

    Clinical.

It's great play from Arsenal loanee Ismeal Kabia who gets down the right and puts a dangerous ball into the middle.

Anthony Scully is there and under pressure diverts the ball through the legs of Jasper Sheik in the South Shields goal to claim his second.

Shrewsbury have had two chances and scored two goals!

Caden Kelly looks to get in behind at the byeline but great defending from Shrewsbury's Tommy McDermott as he shepherds the ball out of play for a goal-kick.

Experience beyond his years from the 20-year-old Burnley loanee.

  18. Postpublished at 12:31 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-1 Shrewsbury

South Shields haven't created as much since the first 10 minutes.

The penalty kick was the only shot on target in the first half hour, by the way.

  19. Postpublished at 12:28 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-1 Shrewsbury

How will the home side react now?

It doesn't look like their heads have dropped so far and they continue to play out from the back, but the Shrewsbury press has improved since the opening 20 minutes or so and they are beginning to hurry their opposition more.

  20. 'Totally against the run of play'published at 12:27 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-1 Shrewsbury

    Jamie Tolley
Former Shrewsbury player on BBC Radio Shropshire

Great penalty from Anthony Scully. The goalkeeper guessed the right way but the power he put on it was too much for him to keep out.

It was a great ball from Will Boyle up to the back post and it looked like Mal Benning was favourite to head it in, and then all of a sudden he gets a push in the back. It was a clear penalty.

Totally against the run of play. South Shields will be disappointed to concede that goal and that penalty with the amount of play they've had, but that's brilliant for Shrewsbury, that will hopefully settle them down.

South Shields will have to have a right good go, which will hopefully leave spaces for the Shrewsbury players to have little pockets to pick themselves into.
