    Anthony Scully pen (23 mins)

    Shrewsbury hit the front!

Anthony Scully steps up from 12 yards and whips it with his right foot into the corner.

Goalkeeper Jasper Sheik gets a hand to it but with the power he can't keep it out.

The League Two side are a little bit fortunate to have been awarded the spot kick but they do not pass up the opportunity.

Ismeal Kabia is starting to cause problems for the hosts on the right-hand side and wins a corner kick for his side.

The Arsenal loanee has impressed so far this season for Shrewsbury.

  4. Postpublished at 12:18 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

The ball bobbles back to Will Jenkins but the South Shields midfielder shoots well over and the ball goes out of the ground.

  5. 'Shields need something to show for it'published at 12:18 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

    Colin White
    BBC Radio Newcastle commentator

It's early to say this, and it may come back to bite me, but even after 15 minutes, Shrewsbury's balls forward are looking a bit desperate.

South Shields need something to show for it. Their off-the-ball movement has been fantastic.

  6. Postpublished at 12:17 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

Caden Kelly whips a good cross into the middle with his trusted right peg, but it is just too far for Shields striker Paul Blackett who was ready pounce in case Shrewsbury keeper Will Brook spilt it his way.

  7. 'This is a real test for Shrewsbury'published at 12:16 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

    Jamie Tolley
Former Shrewsbury player on BBC Radio Shropshire

The confidence that's running through the South Shields players - the way the two centre-halves are cool and composed on the ball, how much they like to pass it, the goalkeeper is the same - they're all willing to have the ball and the movement's brilliant.

It's really good to see in the lower leagues.

This is going to be a real test this afternoon for Shrewsbury. It's important that they try and get up the field and get tight. I know Tommy McDermott is trying to do it but it is important that the other players get behind him and stop this rhythm of play.

  8. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 12:13 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury's Sam Clucas is unable to continue and after 12 minutes he is replaced by birthday boy Mal Benning.

Benning is 32 today - many happy returns to him.

  9. Postpublished at 12:11 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

Looks like Sam Clucas is going to try and run that one off.

The 35-year-old doesn't look like he's moving too freely though.

    Play is back underway.

  10. 'No fear in South Shields'published at 12:10 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

    Paul Dixon
    BBC Radio Newcastle summariser

There's no fear in South Shields whatsoever, and really they could have been 2-0 up.

It's been a really good start.

Shrewsbury will be looking at South Shields and thinking, 'We've got a game on here' - and they have.

  11. Postpublished at 12:09 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

A beautiful turn from Caden Kelly takes him past a Shrewsbury defender but he is unable to find the right through ball.

It's been a lively start to this one and the ball has been played on the floor for almost entirely the first eight minutes.

There is a small break in play as Shrewsbury's Sam Clucas is down, receiving treatment.

  12. CLOSE!published at 12:06 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

Oh so close to 1-0 to South Shields!

Cedwyn Scott is played in on goal but his shot goes inches wide of the far post with the goalkeeper beaten and I really mean inches!

    Agonising for the home side.

Moments later, Sunderland loanee Oliver Bainbridge goes a whisker wide with a left-footed strike from outside the box.

South Shields have started very promisingly.

  13. Postpublished at 12:03 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

South Shields, playing in their home strip of claret and blue, start the game playing out from the back rather confidently.

This is the brave style of play which has seen them win seven out of their past eight in the National League North.

  14. KICK-OFFpublished at 12:00 GMT 2 November

    South Shields 0-0 Shrewsbury

We are underway in our first of four FA Cup first round proper ties taking place today!

  15. 'All of the makings of a full house'published at 11:56 GMT 2 November

South Shields v Shrewsbury (12:00 GMT)

    Paul Dixon
    BBC Radio Newcastle summariser

It's a really big game, I'm very excited along with 4,000 people that are in the ground.

South Shields get well supported but today has got all of the makings of a full house and getting right behind their team for this FA Cup tie.

The management team will be confident of taking on Shrewsbury, but it all depends on how Shrewsbury will want to play.

Shrewsbury Town, who have picked up just three wins from 14 League Two matches so far following their relegation last season, visit National League North side South Shields at midday in a potential banana-skin of a tie.

Their form has picked up recently, however, with two wins and two draws in their past four league games.

Their hosts are flying this season, sitting second in the National League North, and have two games in hand on top dogs AFC Flyde, who have a three-point advantage on them currently.

A defeat last time out to Macclesfield halted a run of seven wins on the bounce in the league with Ian Watson's side racking up 20 goals in that time.

Today is Salopians boss Michael Appleton's first FA Cup first-round tie since the 2023-24 season, when his Charlton Athletic side needed a replay to get past Cray Valley Paper Mills.

He'll be hoping his side won't fold easily today. Sorry.
