When you're down there and you're struggling and you haven't found your mojo yet, you need those moments and they did. they got it last night West Ham, I thought they were excellent in the second half.

Newcastle really struggled, once they went 2-0 up with a fantastic goal from [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka, the first I think in three years. It was a great night for West Ham, a poor one for Newcastle

Aaron Wan-Bissaka's second half goal clinched three points for the Hammers and for Wan-Bissaka personally, it saw him end a very long wait for a goal.

His last goal came on February 2, 2021, almost four years ago for Manchester United against Southampton.

That's a wait of 1,392 days, three Prime Ministers ago.

Wan-Bissaka, who has only scored three goals in his 248-match club career, has netted twice against Newcastle.

Perhaps the biggest frustration for Newcastle United this term has been their inconsistency throughout this season.

After 12 games, they have five wins, three draws and four defeats.

While they have beaten Arsenal and Tottenham at home, as well as holding Manchester City to a draw, they've also suffered recent home defeats to Brighton and West Ham.

Newcastle's defeat to West Ham was their second defeat in their last three home Premier League matches.

Prior to that, Newcastle had only lost in two in 20 Premier League matches at home.

This weekend's results see them drop to 10th in the table, their lowest position at this stage of the season since the 2021-22 campaign.

Julen Lopetegui and the West Ham fans will know its too soon to suggest this has been a corner turned.

Despite this win, they are still averaging fewer points and goals per game than Moyes managed in his final campaign, which saw some fans turn against him.

West Ham averaged 1.58 goals per game last term but that has dropped to 1.25 this season.

But defensively there has been improvement, with 1.73 goals conceded per game this term compared to 1.95 in 2023-24.

"We have to build as a team if we are to work and know what we want to do," Lopetegui told Sky Sports after Monday's win.

"I think about the play. That is the thing that we try to do. We have a lot of matches that we need to do and I believe in the future this team is going to be able to do the things and show the style as a team."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has called West Ham's win at Newcastle a huge victory for under pressure manager Julen Lopetegui.

"A huge result for the manager," Carragher said on Sky Sports.

"I did not see how West Ham could win this game, they have to use this as a springboard now."

The match stats from Newcastle 0-2 West Ham show a largely even affair.

Newcastle edged the match, both in terms of possession and shots, but managed to steer only two of their attempts on target.

That is compared to visitors West Ham, who had triple the amount of shots on goal.

West Ham's 2-0 win at Newcastle saw them pick up their second away victory of the season and their first since beating Crystal Palace 2-1 in August.

They have also kept back-to-back clean sheets for the first time this season.

Ex-Spain boss Lopetegui arrived at West Ham in the summer tasked with moving the Hammers away from the pragmatic football played under David Moyes, who left at the end of last season, and introducing a more attacking style.

But in Moyes' final campaign they reached the Europa League quarter-finals and finished ninth in the Premier League. The minimum target for Lopetegui, therefore, will be to improve on that.

He was allowed to spend in the region of £125m on improving the quality of his squad but, prior to Monday, there was little sign of that layout paying dividends.

The attacking football West Ham fans hoped Lopetegui would introduce was rarely there to be seen as they struggled to score goals - their tally of 13 in their first 11 games was among the lowest in the Premier League with only Everton, Crystal Palace and bottom club Southampton scoring fewer.

But against Newcastle they showed glimpses of what they are capable of going forwards, attacking with pace and in numbers while they were clinical with their chances.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe admits he side missed a big opportunity in their defeat to West Ham.

A home victory for the Magpies would have seen them move to sixth, a point outside the top five.

"That's a massive frustration," said Howe. "The league is so tight that a couple of wins and the whole picture looks different so we kick ourselves tonight because we knew the opportunity we had at home, potentially a great moment for us in our season.

"We haven't grabbed the games and these moments as well as we could have done. We have to learn from that and come back stronger."

And finally, the Daily Mirror have used the headline "Go Salah" in response to his comments that came out on Monday.

They also describe West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui as being a "Happy Hammer" after West Ham's win at St James' Park.

The back page of Metro also describes Mohamed Salah's comments on his Liverpool future as a "bombshell".

They have also given space on the back page to Pep Guardiola, who said he is not going to change despite Manchester City's run of five straight defeats in all competitions.

The Hammers remain 14th after being the Magpies, but are now just four points off London rivals Tottenham in sixth, despite a slow start to their season.

Zambia and Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda has been voted BBC Women's Footballer of the Year.

She received the most votes from readers of the BBC Sport website after a five-player shortlist was announced last month.

The shortlist - based on performances from September 2023 to August 2024 - was selected by a large panel of experts involved in football around the world, including coaches, players, administrators and non-BBC journalists.

"I am shocked and surprised to have this award right by my side," the 24-year-old told BBC Sport.

United States manager Emma Hayes says the stress of her previous job at Chelsea made her "unwell" towards the end of her reign.

Hayes spent 12 years in charge, winning seven Women’s Super League (WSL) titles, before moving to the USA in the summer.

She is back in London as the USA play England in a friendly at Wembley on Saturday, and says she is much happier now she has moved into international football.

The 48-year-old told a media conference on Monday: "I don't have to sacrifice the things that made me healthy. I didn't feel healthy at the end, I actually felt unwell at the end of my time at Chelsea."

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has had surgery after playing 60 minutes with a broken ankle against Manchester City on Saturday.

The 28-year-old needed treatment in the first half following a collision with City winger Savinho, but went on the play the full game asTottenham won 4-0.

"Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don't expect," Vicario wrote on social media.
