With the transfer window open, talks are taking place over potential moves early in the summer.

Manchester United have already made it clear they are looking to sell Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho this summer to help their Profit and Sustainability position when it comes to providing funds to bolster Erik ten Hag's squad.

Austria is a tricky opponent to start [for France].

Ralf Rangnick, the former Manchester United manager, we know his philosophy is about playing with a lot of intensity and they are going to come and press high.

Under no circumstance should a player have the ball at his feet for a second. There should be an Austrian player hassling him to get the ball.

I don't know if they can play like that for 90 minutes, but at some point they will get tired and the French will have a bit more time.

It could be a bit tricky.

  5. Mbappe's France stats + morepublished at 16:16 17 June

    Austria v France (20:00 BST)

    • Mbappe has been directly involved in 24 goals (14 goals, 10 assists) in his past 14 appearances for France.
    • France are two-time winners of the Euros (1984 and 2000) and have reached the final at three of their past four major tournaments
    • France are unbeaten in Euros and World Cup matches on German soil (W5, D3, L0).
    • This is France boss Didier Deschamps' sixth Euros - three as a player (1992, 1996, 2000) and three as a manager (2016, 2020, 2024). He is one away from securing his 100th victory in charge (W99, D30, L24).
    • Olivier Giroud is France's leading scorer with 57 goals.
    • Only Hugo Lloris (145) and Lilian Thuram (142) have won more caps than Olivier Giroud (133).

  6. 'It is a massive game for Saliba'published at 16:12 17 June

    Austria v France (20:00 BST)

    Julien Laurens
French football expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

William Saliba is finally a starter for France.

That Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate partnership was what Didier Deschamps trusted. You can see why he liked them two, but Saliba managed to change his mind and got in ahead of Konate.

It is a massive game for Saliba, but he is ready for it and has worked really hard for it.

He has only been a substitute so far for France and this is the Euros with all the history.

  8. UEFA meet world players' unionpublished at 16:03 17 June

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

A significant meeting took place in Germany away from the football field yesterday.

Whilst world players' union Fifpro is threatening world governing body Fifa with legal action over the new 32-team Club World Cup, relations with European counterpart UEFA are far more cordial.

Arguably, the expansion of European club competitions next season (the draws for the first and second qualifying rounds of the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League are made on Tuesday and Wednesday this week) has a greater impact on the calendar and player workload.

But Fifpro and the PFA are less annoyed by this because UEFA included them in discussions whereas they believe FIFA just imposed the expanded CWC on their members - although FIFA deny this.

President of FIFPRO Europe, David Terrier said: "Our collaboration with UEFA is going from strength to strength and I would like to thank Aleksander Ceferin in understanding the key issues facing players today.

"Our primary objective is to create a healthy and sustainable environment for all players in Europe, and we very much see UEFA as a key partner to build long-lasting solutions.

"We look forward to achieving more, tangible outcomes for the players we represent and, generally, for the betterment of professional football across the continent”.

It's a strange walk to the stadium from the train station in Frankfurt as you walk along the tracks for another 10 minutes or so.

You then queue outside a building that looks like an old hotel with a few cabins before suddenly you come out onto a path which leads you to the stadium entrance (pictured above).

It looks small from the outside but when you get in, it suddenly opens up. A great view from our media seats near the halfway line.

A few Belgium players came out to see the pitch and there was no reaction from supporters until Kevin de Bruyne entered.

"OOOH Kevin de Bruyyyynnee" chanted the Belgium fans to our right, while loud hissing came from the Slovakian supporters to our left.

  11. 'Simply ridiculous' - Free Lions Fans' Embassy responsepublished at 15:53 17 June

The Free Lions Fans' Embassy team have issued the following statement in regards to transport issues in Gelsenkirchen, after England's opening victory.

This included a "guarantee that transport arrangements are in place" for future matches after fans were stuck for three hours after the game against Serbia.

"We are dismayed at what fans have had to go through at yesterday’s game in Gelsenkirchen.

"To see fans stranded in Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof three hours after the game has finished due to transport problems at a major tournament is quite simply ridiculous.

"If UEFA are going to allocate a 9pm kick-off slot on a Sunday evening to any venue then they need to guarantee that transport arrangements are in place that allow all fans, including those going to fan zones, to travel safely, comfortably and conveniently both to, and crucially back from the venue."

It has been a quiet build-up to today's game here in Frankfurt.

There are plenty of fans enjoying themselves though, exploring tourist hotspots in the city and dining outside in the warm weather.

Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur reliably informed us that there is between 10,000-15,000 fans travelling around Germany to support their nation.

These young girls and their father (they were too shy to tell me their names) have certainly dressed for the occasion and the Belgium fans generally are bringing lots of colour to the party.

Slovakia fans are dotted around sporadically too, though it feels like they are being outnumbered currently.

  13. Belgium are ready to do 'something good'published at 15:45 17 June

    Belgium v Slovakia (17:00 BST)

Kevin de Bruyne says Belgium are ready to do "something good" at Euro 2024.

Belgium take on Slovakia in their opening Group E game at 17:00 BST.

The Red Devils were knocked out of Euro 2020 by eventual winners Italy at the quarter-final stage and failed to progress out of the group stage at the 2022 World Cup.

Manchester City midfielder De Bruyne said: "I feel the team is ready and has a lot of energy to do something good.

"Since my return from injury in January I think overall it's been good. I've played most of the games and at a good level in my view.

"So I feel good now, hoping to help Belgium do well in this tournament."

  14. Trossard's 'crazy' path to emerging as Belgium starpublished at 15:40 17 June

    Belgium v Slovakia (17:00 BST)

    Flair, pace and ice-cold composure.

In Leandro Trossard, Belgium and Arsenal seem to be blessed with a world class forward.

He is also an anomaly; a late bloomer. At 29 he has only recently broken through as a regular for his national team.

Speak to those who knew him as a teenager and a vibe emerges.

Yes, he was “gifted on the ball”, and yes, he made defenders “go crazy with his technique”. But, at 16, he was a small boy playing at a small academy in an even smaller league.

To go from there to where he is now 13 years later - essentially Eden Hazard’s replacement in Belgium’s starting XI - is almost unbelievable.

    Read more Trossard's story here.

  15. Slovakia would be 'delighted' with drawpublished at 15:35 17 June

    Belgium v Slovakia (17:00 BST)

Slovakia know they face a tough challenge against the current world number three side Belgium but manager Francesco Calzona said he would be "delighted" with a draw.

"We know we are by no means favourites for the match," Calzona said.

"I hope the team plays beyond themselves and get the utmost in terms of result. What matters is not losing.

"Belgium are good in transition and on the counter-attack, but we have our own way of playing. When you press well it can be an advantage, but if you don’t then you leave more space."

Today's second Group E match will see Belgium take on Francesco Calzona's Slovakia side.

    • Belgium and Slovakia have never met in a major tournament but Belgium are unbeaten in their three friendly encounters (W1-D2-L0).
    • This is Slovakia's third appearance at the European Championship with their best result coming at Euro 2016 where they reached the last 16 on their debut (lost 3-0 to Germany).
    • This is Belgium's seventh appearance at the European Championship with their best result coming at Euro 1980 where they were runners-up.
    • Leo Sauer (born 16 December 2005) is the third-youngest player in all 24 Euro 2024 squads, behind only Spain's Lamine Yamal (13 July 2007) and France's Warren Zaire-Emery (8 March 2006).

Here's where you can keep up to date with all the groups, fixtures and schedule throughout the Euros.

  20. Ancelotti knew what Bellingham could dopublished at 15:16 17 June

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

I was fortunate enough to be at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena last July to see Jude Bellingham's debut as a Real Madrid player.

The encounter with AC Milan offered an insight into the impact Bellingham was likely to have at Real, not least because Ancelotti had already decided to use his new signing in the number 10 role rather than the orthodox central midfield position he had operated in with Borussia Dortmund.

"He has quality in finding open spaces," Ancelotti observed afterwards when I asked him what made Bellingham stand out.

"It is rare to find a player with this kind of quality. We are lucky to have him in our squad."

    So are England.
