Gareth Southgate's caution appears to now be coupled with falling into the familiar trap of trying to play all the best players, even out of position, which has never worked. He must be brave and play the best players for the system if we're going to do well. But will he...?

    Rob

Scrappy 1-0 win, but three important points. Don't need the team to peak yet, another two 1-0 wins will do. We know the positives, we need to work on the other bits. The important thing is we have the options up top to mix it up when needed.

    George

Although not the performance we all wanted England notoriously start poorly in tournaments and a win is the most important thing. In years gone by England would have capitulated and conceded late on but for all their possession Serbia only had one or two clear-cut chances. Must improve for Thursday.

  2. Ten Hag's assessment of Southgate's Englandpublished at 08:27 British Summer Time 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was part of the Dutch TV coverage of yesterday's games, which offered him the platform to make an interesting analysis of Gareth Southgate's England.

Southgate has been tipped to replace Ten Hag at United at some point.

The Dutchman had already recounted on NOS how United officials turned up at his holiday destination in Ibiza last week to tell him he had kept his job - and also that planned contract negotiations might not be easy.

But he offered a less than overwhelming assessment of England's approach in their victory over Serbia.

"It's the vision of the manager [Southgate]," he said.

"England will take a 1-0 lead, then he [Southgate] decides to start gambling with making his team compact and relying on moments for the remaining minutes of the game."

  3. Kane 'could not have done much more'published at 08:23 British Summer Time 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

Former England midfielder Izzy Christiansen says Harry Kane "played a very unselfish role" against Serbia and allowed other attacking players to create the chances.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, she said: "Kane always has a big influence on games but he did not touch the ball a lot in this match. He played a very unselfish role by pinning the Serbian back-line back to allow others to create. He could not really have done much more.

"His moment will come in this tournament and his role is so important in this team."

Phil Foden out on the left will work better when Luke Shaw is there to provide a more natural overlap.

How do you get a player of Phil Foden’s quality to play as he does for Manchester City, for England? Obviously Pep Guardiola’s a genius and Manchester City enjoy far more possession. It wasn’t one of his best games.

  7. 'A mixed performance from Alexander-Arnold'published at 07:59 British Summer Time 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

    Cesc Fabregas
Former Spain midfielder on BBC One

I thought it was a mixed performance from Trent Alexander-Arnold. There were moments where he was superb but other times he was a bit complacent with the ball. He made a mistake that led to a chance for Aleksandar Mitrovic but he reacted and recovered well, showed good personality. The more he plays in the midfield the better he will become.

Gaz: Job done but Trent Alexander-Arnold should not be in midfield - he gives the ball away and makes too many mistakes. We can't do that against the good teams.

Jeremy, Somerset: Sorry to be put a dampener on this victory but Gareth Southgate needs to be ruthless and choose between Jude Bellingham or Phil Foden. Bellingham is so commanding, he squeezes Foden on the left, because of this there was no creative balance in midfield. Consequently, England relied on the right side where Bukayo Saka was out-muscled the deeper we got. Bellingham would have combined much better with a natural left-sided attacker but Jack Grealish isn't on the bench...he is on the beach! There were positives with the defence and substitutes played like they actually wanted the ball, but the team looked tired and short of ideas. Yes, it's a first game victory but everyone you hear or read say one thing - only winning the Euros will do and last nights performance was a long way from doing this.

Dan, London: I hope this tournament finally sees fans in this country reigning in expectations. A solid win last night against a decent side. We don't have eleven world beaters, far from it, Jude Bellingham and maybe Harry Kane and that's it. Three points is decent at this stage.

But while the positives were clear - an opening win and another impressive display from England talisman Jude Bellingham - England failed to provide a statement performance to match the heights reached by Germany and Spain in the opening weekend of the tournament.

BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty has highlighted some of the key talking points thrown up by the Three Lions' victory over Serbia.

    These include:

    • Phil Foden fails to make an impact on the left side of England's front line
    • Gareth Southgate's side lacked control...again
    • Was Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold a success in the centre of midfield?

Jude Bellingham's remarkable rise continued as he netted England's winner in their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia - with boss Gareth Southgate declaring him a player who "writes his own scripts".

The 20-year-old from Stourbridge near Birmingham, who plays for Real Madrid, is the first European player to make an appearance at three major international tournaments before turning 21.

He has scored at two of the tournaments, too, having found the net against Iran at the 2022 World Cup.

  16. Plenty of positives in opening winpublished at 07:19 British Summer Time 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

Jude Bellingham's display was a clear positive as the 20-year-old Real Madrid midfielder - yes, he does not turn 21 until 29 June - drove England on in the opening stages.

Declan Rice then stood firm in the second half to expertly marshal the midfield under increasing pressure from the Serbs, ably supported by an assured performance in central defence by new partnership John Stones and the excellent Marc Guehi.

If we apply a little perspective here, England have historically struggled to win their opening game at the European Championship, failing to do so in their first nine attempts before Gareth Southgate took charge of the Three Lions.

Under Southgate, they are now two from two.

Jude Bellingham scoresImage source, PA Media

Jude Bellingham inspired England to the start they wanted at Euro 2024 with the winning goal and a stunning individual performance in the victory over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.

Bellingham's dream season – which brought him a Champions League triumph at the end of his first campaign with Real Madrid – continued as he demonstrated exactly why he is regarded as England's new superstar.

The 20-year-old powered on to the end of Bukayo Saka's deflected cross with a magnificent header after 13 minutes as Gareth Southgate's side were rewarded for an impressive opening.

England, who started with Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield, fell back into old habits after the break as they sat back, their reduced intensity allowing Serbia to apply pressure. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made an important late save from Dusan Vlahovic.

Harry Kane came close to adding a second for England when he saw a header from substitute Jarrod Bowen's cross superbly touched on to the bar by Serbia keeper Predrag Rajkovic.

England will need to improve, but this was at least a result that will send them into their second Group C game against Denmark on Thursday in good heart.

    Well, OK, maybe it was...

Described on BBC Radio 5 Live commentary as "unnecessarily excruciating", England got their Group C campaign off to a winning start following a 1-0 victory over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday night thanks to an early opener from Jude Bellingham.

After a dominant first 30 minutes, Gareth Southgate's men backed off in a performance reminiscent of defeats to Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

But this time they held on...
