  1. 'Southgate got his starting line-up right'published at 11:29 17 June

Anon asked: Where do you feel Southgate got his line-up right and wrong in yesterday’s game? Personally, I think that Cole Palmer should have started as he would have relished the chance at his first tournament. Phil Foden felt like he was guaranteed a starting spot, but didn’t perform like he deserved it.

Phil replied: I should make it clear that I thought Gareth Southgate got his starting line-up right last night, although I would pick Luke Shaw ahead of Kieran Trippier at left-back if the manager feels he is fit enough.

Cole Palmer is an outstanding young talent and could well make his mark on Euro 2024 but I would not contemplate leaving Bukayo Saka out to accommodate him. Saka has been very consistent for England and fully justified his selection last night.

I would never question Foden’s attitude and approach for one second but at the moment the role that starts with him out left does not look a comfortable fit for him. He is not imposing himself on England games as much as he can or should.

  2. 'Why Kane is not England's playmaker any more'published at 11:26 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

Harry Kane’s role in Sunday’s Euro 2024 win against Serbia was different to what we are used to seeing him do for England, but it was just as important for the team.

We know Kane can drop deep and play wonderful passes forward for runners to get behind the opposition but, whether we were on top in the game or under pressure, he had another job to do in Gelsenkirchen.

As he explained afterwards, he stayed high early on because Serbia were defending deep and marking man-to-man. If he had dropped into midfield he would have brought a defender back with him, when we wanted to give our midfielders and other forwards as much room and time on the ball as possible.

  3. 'Each game will be different' - Kanepublished at 11:23 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

Speaking after the victory over Serbia on BBC One, Harry Kane was positive on his new role: "Each game will be different. I played a little bit higher because they like to defend man-for-man.

"I wanted to keep them deep so Phil [Foden], Jude [Bellingham] and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] can play in the pocket. Each game will be different, sometimes I will drop in and others I will stay higher up.

"This game was all about holding the ball up and winning fouls to close the game out."

I see Harry Kane now more as a deep-lying forward who can drop and help out the midfield. He doesn’t have the pace to break the lines, leave that to Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon. I would play Phil Foden or Cole Palmer as a 10 and put Jude Bellingham next to Declan Rice. He needs to be involved with everything in there.

  5. 'The left side of the team did not function'published at 11:16 17 June

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Jon asked: Phil, do you see any similarities with the shoehorning of Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden in the team to when we used to try to get Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in the same midfield? Surely Bellingham at 8, Foden at 10 and a proper left-winger is the answer?

Phil replied: Hello, Jon. You make a great point and sadly I’m old enough to remember covering England at tournaments where that was always a talking point when Sven-Goran Eriksson picked his teams.

This all hinges on Gareth Southgate being prepared to change his formation and only time will tell if he does. I think the left side of the team did not function last night as Kieran Trippier is right-footed and was not really getting beyond Phil Foden, who did not see enough of the ball to make an impact.

What I’m pretty certain is that there will be no tampering with Jude Bellingham’s position. He is too good where he is and the team has to revolve around him.

I’m sure this is something Southgate will be thinking about. The return of Luke Shaw cannot come quick enough for me – but how fit will he be?

Euro 2024: Bellingham explains England goal celebration against Serbia

Underwhelming, concluded Ellie, but the opposite was true about England's dominant start to their victory over Serbia, capped by what turned out to be Jude Bellingham's winning goal in 13th minute.

Bellingham explained his celebration with Trent Alexander-Arnold on Sky Sports: "It's really special to score anytime for England, especially a match-winning goal that gives us points and can contribute to us hopefully having a good tournament.

"The celebration was from a game we play called 'Wolf' and one of the staff always holds their face like that when he doesn't know what's going on.

"So it was more a celebration for the background staff putting so much work in everyday and they won't receive any awards like this, but we value them so much and it's important that we keep that atmosphere."

  7. 'It was more nerve-wracking than it should have been'published at 11:10 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England's performance against Serbia was underwhelming, said fan Ellie, from Nottingham, on this morning's phone-in with Nicky Campbell on BBC Radio 5 Live:

“It was underwhelming to say the very least. At least we did win, a clean sheet I suppose

"I think we’ve got such an incredible squad. We’ve got a lot of potential and we don’t seem to be using it very well.

"Individual players are very good, I think we can all agree that Jude Bellingham is class. I think Bukayo Saka was very good in the first half.

"But we were just very slow, almost lethargic. We were very unbalanced, everything was going down the right-hand side

"It very easily could have ended in a draw, it was more nerve-wracking than it should have been.”

I actually thought Kane was a warrior in the second half. He had to come deeper otherwise he was too far away from the ball. Serbia locked us in late on. They always had two or three players around Kane and generally fouling him. He held it up well but the rest of the team couldn't get to him to give him an outlet.

  9. Landmark appearance 'makes be so proud' - Kanepublished at 11:05 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

Harry Kane made his 23rd appearance in a major tournament in Sunday's 1-0 win over Serbia - a record for an England player.

The Three Lions' record goalscorer explained his pride at this latest landmark in a post on X: "Representing my country at major tournaments is something I never take for granted so to have made more appearances at major tournaments than any England player in history makes me so proud! Looking forward to many more - bring on Thursday!"

  10. Kane's new role?published at 11:00 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

In 45 games for Bayern Munich last season, Harry Kane bagged 44 goals.

This helped the England captain win the European Golden Boot for the most goals across Europe's top leagues.

However, against Serbia the 30-year-old cut a lone figure up front at times and saw his second-half header pushed onto the bar.

With 12 assists last season, Kane clearly is not just a goal scorer, but with so many creative options does this mean we will see less touches from the England captain this Euros?

Kane may have to be even more clinical when the chances do come...

  12. Kane creating 'space for the creative players'published at 10:53 17 June

    Ex-England striker on BBC One

Harry Kane isn't necessarily sacrificing himself for the team in terms of the fact he can still get in the box and score goals.

He won't be worried at all.

He is playing his part, he's not dropping deep like we've seen from him in the past, he's keeping Serbia deep to make that space for the creative players behind him.

He won't care about general touches, just those he can make to put the ball in the back of the net.

Second half Kane came too deep crowding midfield giving no outlet up front and consequently the ball kept coming straight back. The one chance he got was from a rare occasion he'd got himself furthest forward. England won't be able to get away with sitting back too deep against the better sides. Be more pro-active pressing and making things happen in the opposition half.

  14. Kane second bottom in player raterpublished at 10:46 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

While Marc Guehi earned a high rating from fans on BBC Sport's player rater on Sunday, which was topped by goalscorer Jude Bellingham, captain Harry Kane faired less well, coming second bottom with a rating of just 5.41, marginally better than Phil Foden on 4.64.

Kane ploughed a lone furrow up front at times in the second half but came close to doubling England's lead in the closing stages, with his late header superbly touched on to the bar by Serbia keeper Predrag Rajkovic.

I'll fully admit that I wasn't sure on Guehi ahead of Branthwaite in the squad, never mind starting XI, but to be fair to Southgate he has turned out to be an astute choice. I think he only made one mistake all game? Solid in defence and decent passing but that's not his job anyway given Stones should be getting forward. Promising for the future!

The thing I’m most pleased with last night was Marc Guehi’s performance. Everyone has doubts about England's back line but I think that performance against some of the most physical opposition in the tournament should put worries to bed.

  16. Could Guehi be on the move this summer?published at 10:31 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

Marc Guehi’s performances have not gone unnoticed by the Premier League's elite. The former Chelsea player has excelled since he was brought to Crystal Palace by sporting director Dougie Freedman after a successful loan period with Swansea in the Championship.

Palace accept that bids may come this summer for the centre-back who only has two years left on his contract.

He has been linked with Manchester United, but it is thought a number of teams at the top end of the Premier League have kept tabs on Guehi.

With Guehi likely to play a big role for England during the tournament, that interest will only increase - if he impresses.

Within the England camp, there is a firm belief he can excel.

I'm a bit surprised that no-one has mentioned how well Jarrod Bowen played when he came on. He provided the cross for Harry Kane's header, and was a thorn in the side for Serbia down their left side. The game seemed to pass Phil Foden by, and not for the first time in an England shirt

  18. Does Guehi have any weaknesses?published at 10:23 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at the England camp

Marc Guehi has become adept at bringing the ball out from the back, reading the game and finding the right position to occupy.

However, at 6ft tall he is not the tallest centre-back. His Premier League aerial numbers are low, with an average of 1.3 successful duels in the air per game. Lewis Dunk posted an average of 1.8, Jarrod Branthwaite 2.7 and Harry Maguire 3.8 for 2023-24.

Positional awareness helps him out, but his limitations in the air could be an area that sides such as Serbia, who have powerful striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, may target.

In an England defence with existing questions about the match sharpness of John Stones and fitness of Luke Shaw, Guehi also missed 12 games in the season just ended after undergoing knee surgery. He returned for Palace's final three games.

He played in both of England's warm-up games and started the defeat to Iceland as Southgate looked to try out the partnership of Guehi and Stones.

I was very impressed with Marc Guehi's performance, he was very calm and composed. It must be daunting to enter your first major tournament at times but he did not show it at all. He did the basics very well, didn't try to do anything out of the ordinary. He was always on the front foot and ready.

Can't remember Pickford ever making a big mistake in the 3 previous major tournaments he has played in. He has quietly become a great leader for Southgate but doesn't get much limelight. Having said that... Don't every team want a GK that just does his job and gets on with it.

Bellingham, Guehi and Saka were a huge positive out of last nights game, as was a win! No one will remember how this game went if we go on to win the tournament. But Kane when we were defending in the second half was so poor. He’s either got to stay high as an outlet or actually press the ball. The trotting back and forth in front of the full backs as they crept higher up the pitch was useless. Really disappointing.
