Amidst the criticism of Phil Foden, Harry Kane and Gareth Southgate, there are the ongoing plaudits for Jude Bellingham.

The 20-year-old, unsurprisingly, dominated the newspaper back pages on Monday for his top-level performance against Serbia.

92 touches. 70 passes. One attempt on target. One goal. Player of the match.

Which in the words of The Guardian, is "Just Jude."

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England striker Dion Dublin does not think Gareth Southgate will change his team when they play Denmark on Thursday, despite calls for different attacking options.

"I don’t think there will be major changes at all," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Maybe the only question marks will be over Anthony Gordon or Cole Palmer as one of those could come in.

"Southgate is never going to be able to win with everybody. There are always going to be people criticising him, but I won’t be one of them."

  4. 'I see England as potential winners'published at 15:00 17 June

Imran asked: What's your take on England's chances after their shaky start? Can they still make a deep run?

Phil replied: Morning, Imran. It certainly wasn’t sparkling, more of a case of job done. I definitely think England can make a deep run and I am hanging on to the belief that they will grow into Euro 2024.

I actually see England as potential winners but they will certainly have to be better than last night. Early days, though, and three points in the bag.

Bellingham is getting rave reviews and rightly so, but when discussing how England sat back and lacked someone to control the game from midfield to make Serbia defend, he gets a pass. Are people missing something? If he was flawless and Alexander-Arnold had a decent first game, as most pundits agree, why did Serbia dominate midfield? Surely he's as much a part of that behaviour as anyone else?

Despite that second half being difficult to watch, we still defended stoutly against a very physical side. Kane must be nursing his bruises this morning, I lost count of how many times he was kicked to the ground. Historically, England have often been a "team of two halves", and when we come up against a team that actually comes out and plays football, I'm confident we will exploit the spaces better.

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart says England's performance against Serbia "was good enough" because a winning start to the tournament is all that matters.

"There was some excellent stuff in the first half but then the second half felt like we were having to look for the result," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily. "But we dug in and got the result, so that is the main thing.

"It is a winning start to the tournament and with our superstar [Jude Bellingham] shining.

"England are set up to win this tournament and not just to win that game to get us all singing and dancing. It was about getting the result.

"I felt like we were comfortable and could score if we needed too but this is the long game. If you have to scrape a few 1-0 results then so be it.

"This is a team of young and exciting players who can and will blow people away."

  10. 'Shaw’s return cannot come quick enough'published at 14:37 17 June

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Luke ShawImage source, Getty Images

Dan asked: Do you think England lack a bit of pace up top with this line-up? Felt like Saka was the only option for getting in behind a fairly high defensive line in the second half last night. Perhaps having someone to make runs in behind might be a better option than Foden, as Kane has never been amazingly quick?

Phil replied: Hard to argue with that, Dan.

Bukayo Saka and Kyle Walker looked really potent on the right as they both have pace but the left side just didn’t function with Kieran Trippier as a right-footed left-back and Phil Foden in a position that is not his best.

Luke Shaw’s return cannot come quick enough but he has not played since early February. He will be desperately short of match sharpness but Shaw can get down the flanks and provide quality. This, in turn, may help Foden.

If Gareth Southgate wants to keep this shape, then Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon could be a viable alternative.

Phil Foden's getting a lot of criticism, but he didn't get the space to play. If Trippier won't overlap and Shaw is unfit, why not play Joe Gomez? He's right-footed but has played a lot on the left for Liverpool this season, and knows how to overlap like a left-footer for Diaz, so could easily replicate this for Foden.

  13. 'One thing we lack from our TV screens is perspective'published at 14:26 17 June

    Serbia 0-1 England

Foden vies for the ballImage source, Getty Images

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha says he is "not panicking" about Phil Foden, despite the criticism of his performance against Serbia on Sunday.

Speaking to BBC Sport's Simon Stone: "It wasn't his best game but not every game is going to be like that [in terms of opposition].

"Defensively, along with Harry Kane, they did what they had to do.

"Attacking wise it was no where near his best performance, but if he had not been so good defensively then England would have suffered.

"One thing we lack from our TV screens is perspective. The key difference I see between himself and Bellingham is that Bellingham is more physically imposing. Some of the things he does Foden can not do.

"Foden's strengths are in the final third and when he is driving with the ball. Playing on the left is not his natural position, but as far as football goes, sometimes you just don't have a good game.

"I am not panicking about him."

Foden is at fault for his own success because he can play on the left-side, and that's where Southgate plays him, but at club level he plays on the right. He and Walker have a complete understanding which is ignored at the international level. As Saka can only play in one position, it has forced Foden to the far side, with no attacking full-back behind him. Hence why he wants to drift in. The Foden, Saka and Bellingham debate is just the new version of the Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes debate.

  15. Do England lack creativity?published at 14:18 17 June

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Alonosi on “X” asked: Hi Phil. Why do England, for the last 20 years-plus, suddenly lose all creativity when a tournament starts? Also why is no-one talking about Foden just not being very good for England?

Phil replied: Foden seems to be all people are talking about this morning. It has been the dominant topic on this Q&A, was a subject for discussion by the BBC Sport pundits and I also wrote about it in my post-match piece.

He just does not seem a comfortable fit on the left but unless Gareth Southgate changes his formation he will not get his chance in the centre because England’s team simply has to be built around Jude Bellingham.

Interesting point on creativity because England have only scored nine goals in their last seven games so you may be on to something there, at least in the context of recent form.

England have done well in recent tournaments so let’s hope they prove you wrong here.

Let us turn our attention back to England now, where Phil Foden's performance against Serbia has been a lively topic of conversation.

Is the criticism harsh? And more importantly, will he keep his place in the team for Thursday's game against Denmark?

  17. Man Utd's Ibiza trip to see Ten Hagpublished at 14:11 17 June

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Erik ten Hag revealed on Dutch TV last night that Manchester United turned up in Ibiza to confirm he would remain as manager.

He didn't say who went - but it wasn't owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Sir Dave Brailsford would be the obvious choice given Omar Berrada has not officially been installed as chief executive yet and Dan Ashworth is on gardening leave and still employed by Newcastle.
