On the last three occasions that Leeds won the second tier title, (2019/20, 1989/90, 1963/64), Liverpool won the top tier title. It is on for four in a row.

Nervous and apprehensive. I think we can beat Stoke and hopefully Burnley v Sheffield United will be a draw.

After a heart-wrenching loss in last season's play-off finals, no Leeds fan wants to go through the gut-churning experience of the knock-out stages once again.

They want to sail through on the merit of a great season and today could be the day they earn it.

Win today and the supporters will be filtering out of Elland Road and towards the nearest screen to see if rivals Burnley can do them a favour and knock Sheffield United out the running later this afternoon, elevating both Leeds and the Clarets to the top flight.

Though they'll need to beat a resurgent Stoke City team to be in with a chance.

The Potters have been working hard to survive in the Championship and have found their fighting spirit rewarded, unbeaten across their past four games and winning both their previous two.

Leeds will also face the extra challenge of being without winger Dan James, who has been highly influential in the side this season but misses out due to a hamstring issue.

  5. Canaries look to spoil Millwall's top six aspirationpublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 21 April

    Millwall v Norwich (15:00 BST)

Norwich head coach Johannes Hoff-Thorup sat in the dugoutImage source, Getty Images

Norwich City boss Johannes Hoff-Thorup says that it was "probably a little bit too much to expect" that the Canaries could reach the top six this season - though as recently as earlier this month, even he believed there could still be a chance.

That opportunity has tumbled out of their grasp and in unpleasant fashion.

If you are going by form, only Sheffield Wednesday have performed poorer than Norwich City over their past six league games to end the season on a miserable note.

But the Canaries could make themselves feel slightly better by crushing another teams hopes of dream of play-off contention as they make the trip to Millwall.

The Lions opportunities to sneak into the top six are on a knife's edge but to keep the embers going, they will need to claim victory at the Den else risk handing their nearest rivals a major boost - or even see those play-off dreams dashed by a side who, at this point, are fighting for pride.

  6. Allez! Which Frenchman will find joy at the Stadium of Light?published at 14:53 British Summer Time 21 April

    Sunderland v Blackburn (15:00 BST)

Blackburn manager Valerien Ismael claps their fansImage source, Rex Features

It's finally starting to click for Valerian Ismael at Blackburn Rovers.

The Lancashire side backed up their first win under the Frenchman with another against fellow play-off chasers Millwall on Good Friday and could cap off their Easter weekend with an even bigger victory against fourth-placed Sunderland.

It may be too little, too late for the promotion fight for Rovers. There's five other teams above them in better stead to take the last two play-off spots and even victory today won't keep them in contention if both Bristol City and Coventry City also succeed this afternoon.

But, while this likely isn't a warm up for a play-off battle, Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris will be wanting a win just as much.

His side haven't won in three league games, losing their past two. He'll want his side to play themselves into form before they begin their promotion-hunting in May and they've got very little time left to do so.

But that doesn't mean he's not willing to take some risks while the side are safe from losing out, naming seven changes to face Blackburn.

Luton v Bristol City (15:00 BST)

The players tunnel at Kenilworth RoadImage source, Rex Features

These two sides have very different targets as we enter the final three games of the campaign but might just be timing things perfectly.

Hands up who had already pencilled-in Luton's name to one of the relegation spots - seven games ago there might have been a few of us joining you but just one defeat and three wins since 11 March have breathed life into the Hatters survival hopes.

Friday's win at Derby County means only goal difference separates the two with Hull City only a further two points ahead.

The fly in the ointment for Matt Bloomfield is they have failed to beat any of the current top six so far this season - for the record it is one point from a possible 30 which came with a draw against Leeds and they also still have to play Coventry.

Only Burnley have taken more points than Bristol City from their past 10 games in the Championship, in fact the Robins have only lost one from a dozen outings which means they could secure a play-off spot with a win at Kenilworth Road this afternoon.

Away form has been an issue with City having the lowest points haul of any of the top six from their travels with their last victory on the road coming at Hull City at the start of March.

We can surely expect an open game with what is at stake for these two?

  9. Owls not at Rohl's level - but can Boro reach theirs?published at 14:50 British Summer Time 21 April

Sheff Wed v Middlesbrough (15:00 BST)

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny RohlImage source, Rex Features

"I always help them and try to improve them but some players showed today they are not able to play at my level."

That's what Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield after their disappointing 2-0 loss to Stoke City on Good Friday.

That's not the only result that's led to such honesty from the German. The Owls have not won any of their past six league matches, the worst current run of any team in the Championship.

Of course, Wednesday have been going through a tumultuous time to put it lightly - poor financial situations and rumours of Rohl's departure muddying the air.

It's a bad time that Middlesbrough will want to make worse as they look to keep in touching distance of the play-offs.

If Boro lose, they won't be out the race but nobody wants to drop off their pace when the finish line is close in sight and they've still got someone to catch.

  10. Pompey scenting survivalpublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 21 April

    Portsmouth v Watford (15:00 BST)

A view of the inside of Fratton ParkImage source, Rex Features

As Andy Williams once sang in one of his popular ditties from the 1960s, Portsmouth are almost there.

Okay, the word Portsmouth might not have strictly been part of the official title but you could forgive those Pompey fans of a certain vintage heading down Frogmore Road today from humming the tune as they can almost smell Championship survival.

A rotten start which failed to produce a win until 19 October had many fearing their long-awaited return to the Championship might be a brief one but for sometime now there has been a feeling John Mousinho's side have been doing just enough to keep themselves out of serious trouble.

Six points separate Portsmouth from the drop zone so a win here today might make the final two games a bit of a Pompey party.

Watford might also be the ideal opponents today.

With the Hornets now out of the play-off reckoning, having lost three of their past four games, they might just be that team who are thinking about sunny beaches, flip-flops and all-inclusive breakfasts - but don't let boss Tom Cleverley hear you say that.

"It is an important game for us. We want to finish the season as well as possible," he said.

    We shall wait and see...

  11. Rangers' revival continuespublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 21 April

    QPR v Swansea (15:00 BST)

QPR host Swansea who both look to finish the season strong and secure a top-half finish.

Marti Cifuentes’ side sit 14th and are unbeaten in their last four games, scoring an impressive six goals, only conceding three.

They recorded a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Preston on Good Friday, leaving them mathematically safe, however Paul Smyth was given a three-match ban after violent conduct meaning he will miss the remainder of the season. two changes have been made to the team since the win with Lucas Andersen and Rayan Kolli coming in.

The Swans occupy 11th place in the league and can no longer reach the playoffs but look to better last season’s finish of 14th.

The away side are unbeaten in their last five under interim Alan Sheehan, winning four of those and scoring eight goals, with only the two conceded at title-chasing Leeds United.

These two sides faced each other on Boxing Day, with the south Wales side winning 3-0. Let’s hope for a closer one today…

  12. Last chance Baggies have to avoid Rams raidpublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 21 April

West Brom v Derby (15:00 BST)

WBA boss Tony MowbrayImage source, Rex Features

"Never go back" is an oft-used phrase when the possibility of previously popular managers returning to former clubs raises its head.

That's not to say there is anything wrong with it or that Tony Mowbray might have thought twice before taking over at The Hawthorns but the bare facts are they were sixth when he returned in January but a run of four defeats from their past five games means they now have a six-point gap to bridge to the play-off places in their remaining three games.

Those three matches are against Derby, Cardiff and Luton - three of the current bottom four - good thing or bad thing? Only time will tell but only a win today will do.

All was well in the Derby garden at the start of the month with four successive wins lifting them out of the relegation zone and surely set to climb away into the distance?

The trouble is there is a reason why it has been a season of struggle for the Rams and two points from their subsequent four matches including Friday's damaging home reverse to Luton means nothing is settled.

Suddenly their next game against Hull City looks like it might have their whole world resting on it but first comes the Baggies and with only Plymouth having taken fewer away points than Derby in the Championship this season, any kind of positive result could prove to be precious.

With Plymouth Argyle desperately needing a win boss Miron Muslic has given a rare start to injury prone striker Muhamed Tijani.

The Nigerian, who is on loan from Slavia Prague, has not started since the opening day of the season when the Pilgrims were thrashed 4-0 by Sheffield Wednesday.

He has suffered from serious hamstring problems since then and has been nursed back to fitness, scoring twice for Argyle including the winner against Sheffield United last week.

It could be a gamble, but Argyle need goals - could Tijani write himself into Home Park history today and help fire Plymouth towards Championship survival?

    Plymouth v Coventry (15:00 BST)

Plymouth host play-off chasing Coventry City and sit three points from safety at the bottom of the table, but a victory today could see them level on points with Derby County who travel to West Brom.

Miron Muslic’s men suffered a 2-1 defeat to Middlesbrough on Good Friday but have only lost two of their last five matches, including that impressive victory against Sheffield United.

The Sky Blues have very different ambitions and currently occupy the final playoff spot, three points clear of Middlesbrough.

Victory today for Frank Lampard’s men could see them leapfrog Bristol City into fifth, who themselves could seal a play-off spot if they beat Luton.

These two sides met on Boxing Day earlier this season and it was the away side who ran out as 4-0 winner - fast forward to now and the 2022/23 League One Champions find themselves in desperate need of all three points.

    Hull v Preston (15:00 BST)

Hull host Preston at the MKM Stadium in what could prove to be a crucial game in the relegation battle.

The Tigers sit in 20th, just two points above the drop zone and only one win in their last five games.

Ruben Selles’ side were defeated 1-0 by Swansea on Good Friday, with midfielder Matt Crooks seeing red after coming off the bench.

The Lilywhites are just three places above the home side but are four points better off and will almost secure safety in the division.

The away side have only recorded four wins in the league in 2025 and winless in their last five league games, losing three.

The last time these two met, it was Paul Heckingbottom’s side who came out on top with a 1-0 victory on Boxing Day.

    Cardiff v Oxford (15:00 BST)

Cardiff interim head coach Aaron RamseyImage source, Getty Images

When Cardiff City announced the departure of boss Omer Riza on Saturday eyebrows remained in the non-raised position - the speculation had been near-constant for at least seven weeks.

During that period the Bluebirds won just one of their nine league games, losing five, including a highly damaging defeat by Stoke City.

Sections of the 1,000-plus away following who watched a meek surrender at Sheffield United on Friday vented their frustration late on, chanting "we want Riza out" and "you're getting sacked in the morning".

On Saturday they got their wish with Wales captain Aaron Ramsey given the onerous task of trying to keep them up with three games remaining - starting today against Oxford.

The U's have got themselves five points clear of trouble with a win-one, lose-one run over their past six outings although only Derby and Plymouth have taken fewer away points than Gary Rowett's side so far this season.

It feels like a 'must-win' for Cardiff and a 'don't lose and we'll be fine' for Oxford - this might be a tough watch.

Spare a thought for the Cardiff City media team, who had sent their match programmes for today's fixture against Oxford United to be printed before the news that manager Omer Riza had been sacked.

As a result, it's still Riza in the manager's notes section of the programme.

Caretaker boss Aaron Ramsey has had enough to deal with since being put in charge hastily on Saturday, so we'll have to wait until the post-match media interviews to hear what the Wales captain makes of it all.

  20. What's at stakepublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 21 April

    #bbcefl

Sheffield United's trip to Burnley later on this afternoon could potentially decide the top two - but that's not the only game with plenty on the line:

    • A win for the Clarets will mean they secure a return to the top flight.
    • A Burnley victory would also mean Leeds can win promotion if they succeed at Stoke also, leaving the Blades to say farewell to automatic promotion.
    • As for the play-off race, Bristol City could take their spot today if they conquer Luton Town and Boro falter against Sheffield Wednesday.
    • Defeats for West Bromwich Albion and Millwall could see them out of the race should the Robins and Coventry City both claim three points.
    • At the bottom, nobody can be relegated but defeat for Plymouth at home to Coventry coupled with a Derby win against West Brom and Hull earning a result against Preston would leave the Pilgrims six points from safety with a vastly inferior goal difference.
