Everton fought back to hold Brentford to a draw and extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to seven matches.

Yoane Wissa's 13th goal of the season gave the hosts the lead just before the break but David Moyes' side rescued a point through a Jake O'Brien header in west London.

Everton only grew into the game gradually after Brentford's fast start but the Toffees did pass up two gilt-edged chances in the first half with Beto wasteful on both occasions.

The in-form striker failed to round Mark Flekken after going one-on-one in the 39th minute before the Brentford goalkeeper rushed off his line to deny him three minutes later.

Those misses proved costly for the visitors as Brentford went ahead deep into stoppage time when Kevin Schade's long throw was headed on to the crossbar by Bryan Mbeumo before Wissa nodded home the rebound from close range.

Flekken did well to keep out Jack Harrison's corner that almost crept in at his near post soon after the restart and Carlos Alcaraz then fired inches wide of the goal from the edge of the box.

Wissa had a second ruled out for offside before the visitors finally found a way through the Bees defence as O'Brien headed Vitalii Mykolenko's cross low past Flekken with 13 minutes remaining.

For the second game running, it will feel like two points dropped rather than one gained for Everton.

The Toffees were denied a late penalty by VAR in the 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Saturday, but they only had themselves to blame for not getting the win after a wasteful display at Brentford.

Beto, who came into the game with five goals in his past four games, had a day to forget, missing a string of chances which could have put Everton in a comfortable position.

The Guinea-Bissau striker failed to get a telling touch on O'Brien's header in front of goal early on, before squandering two one-on-one chances in the space of three minutes.

He could have then secured the three points for the visitors when played through on goal in the 88th minute but it was Flekken who once again came out on top in the battle between the two.

However, manager Moyes was keen to focus on the club's overall progress in recent weeks, telling TNT Sports: "Let's be honest, Everton were in a terrible position when we came in.

"But we are now looking up rather than down. We are disappointed with a draw tonight and should have picked up more on Saturday as well."

His side, who are 15th with 32 points, will next travel to 17th-placed Wolves.

Yoane Wissa has now scored 39 Premier League goals for Brentford

Brentford have failed to win a home fixture in six attempts now, having gone unbeaten in eight games on home soil at the start of the season.

They have also not kept a home clean sheet in 14 league games so Thomas Frank's side will want to improve their home form if they are to remain in the race for Europe.

Wednesday's draw left them eight points behind fifth-placed Chelsea and six behind sixth-placed Newcastle United, who lost 2-0 to leaders Liverpool.

Wissa and Mbeumo combined yet again and the former's first-half header marked his highest tally in a Premier League season but, other than the strike, the Bees hardly worked Jordan Pickford in the Everton goal.

Frank will demand a better showing from his forwards, with games against Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Newcastle - all sides battling them for place in Europe - coming next.
