Summary

  1. Arsenal's spending under Artetapublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 16 June

    Arsenal

There has been consternation from Arsenal fans about the club not yet spending big on a new striker, with questions being asked of Mikel Arteta and the Gunners' transfer team.

Supporters by and large can't complain too much about a lack of spending under Arteta though - in the five full seasons the Spaniard has been Arsenal manager, they have consistently had one of the highest net spends in the Premier League.

The exception though was last season, where the purchases of David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino were not enough to push Arteta's side upwards from second place.

2020-21: £56.8 million (8th highest net spend in the Premier League that season)

    2021-22: £116m (1st)

    2022-23: £138.5m (6th)

    2023-24: £141.4m (2nd)

    2024-25: £21.4m (11th)

Arsenal spent £60m on Havertz, yet they aren’t willing to spend a decent amount of money on Sesko or Gyokeres. Silly behaviour from the board. If they actually want to win a cup, they need to get it over the line.

    Guy, Nottingham

Arsenal will be linked with Sesko and Gyokeres all summer then will sign Tevez on loan on deadline day which, on this occasion, would still be an upgrade on Havertz after his showing at Soccer Aid.

There are definitely a few transfer cogs turning now, so here's another little round-up of all the latest developments:

  5. 'I want to win everything' - Eze's stats up with bestpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 16 June

Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze is likely to be in demand this summer, with Bayern Munich and Manchester United reportedly among the clubs interested in triggering his £68m release clause.

Eze, soon to turn 27, finished the 2024-25 season with a flourish, becoming the first player to score in six consecutive appearances for Palace since Darren Ambrose in November 2009.

His 14 goals in all competitions included the FA Cup final winner as the club earned a first major trophy. No player in Europe’s top five leagues registered more goal involvements across all competitions than Eze after the March international break.

Also prominent on that list is Eze’s good friend and former team-mate Michael Olise, who was last month voted as the Bundesliga's rookie of the season for 2024-25 after a superb first year with Bayern Munich.

Their proven partnership on the pitch may well pique Bayern's interest. The pair created an impressive 34 chances for each other in their last two seasons together at Crystal Palace despite injuries limiting their playing time. Olise provided the assist for eight of Eze’s 22 Premier League goals while they were both at the Eagles.

Eze, who has spent five years with Palace, recently gave encouragement to would-be suitors by saying: "I want to win everything, that's it. That's the mentality, that’s the aim, it's always been the goal from the start."

Stats: Eze scored eight goals in 34 league appearances for Oliver Glasner's side last season, including five in the final five games of the season.

He also had four goals and an assist in five FA Cup games, including the winning goal in the title showdown at Wembley.

Update: Eze has a £68m release clause with Bayern Munich reportedly one of the clubs interested in the England forward. ESPN have also reported that Manchester United could target the Palace star if their attempts to sign Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo this summer fail.

Eberechi Eze has attracted plenty of interest this transfer window after his exploits with Crystal Palace last season.

He bagged eight goals and eight assists for a Palace side that finished 12th in the Premier League while also scoring the winner in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City, which helped the Eagles secure their first major silverware and also qualify for Europe.

The England forward, 26, has a £68m release clause and reports have recently linked him with a move to German giants Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, a report in ESPN on Saturday claims Eze is one of the two players, along with Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo, that Manchester United could go for if they miss out on Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo.

Aston Villa are also among the sides who could turn to Eze as Unai Emery's side look to further bolster their ranks.

That news will be music to ears for the Liverpool fans!

But let's just go back to Manchester United now as the Red Devils are also looking to rebuild, having already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves.

A player they are reportedly keeping a tab on is Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze.

Florian Wirtz is reportedly set to have his Liverpool medical on Friday as the Premier League champions look to finalise his big-money move from Bayer Leverkusen.

According to the Athletic's David Ornstein, the German attacking midfielder will "arrive in the United Kingdom later this week ahead of the medical but both elements are subject to change."

The Reds have agreed a £116m deal to sign Wirtz with £16m of that coming in add-ons.

Wirtz made his debut for Leverkusen at the age of 17, scoring 57 goals in 197 games for the club, and helped them win the Bundesliga for the first time in 2024.

All this talk about who Man Utd should sign. I think one name who should be at the top of their list is Kobbie Mainoo on a long-term deal. I've heard they are open to offers for him and he doesn't fit into Amorim's plans, but I think he needs to think again. He's a top young player, just turned 20, and the future of Man Utd and England. It would be madness to sell him.

  12. Is Mbeumo’s goal scoring sustainable?published at 13:26 British Summer Time 16 June

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

    Bryan MbeumoImage source, Getty Images

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is a man in demand after 20 Premier League goals in 2024-25, the first time he has scored 10 times or more in a top-flight season.

That was despite an expected goals total for the campaign of 12.3, meaning he outperformed his xG by 7.7.

Historically, that level of clinical finishing has rarely proved repeatable.

In the past five Premier League seasons, just 14 players have overperformed their xG by at least five goals. The only player to do so more than once is Tottenham's Son Heung-min, in 2020-21 and 2021-22.

That doesn’t make Mbeumo, who consistently ranks highly for chances created, any less of an asset to a new team. But it could mean clubs chasing him pay a bit of a premium for his signature and perhaps risks inflating expectations from supporters.

The Cameroon international, 25, has been linked with a move to Manchester United, who have already signed Matheus Cunha, another player who dramatically surpassed his xG last term.

The Brazilian's 15 goals for Wolves came from an xG of 8.6, with only Mbeumo and Chris Wood (6.6) recording bigger differences in 2024-25.

Cunha wanted to come to United so that is a big plus for me. Unlike the vast majority of major signings we've made in the last 10 years who have just come for the money. Someone who wants to play for the badge is worth their weight in gold nowadays.

  14. Man Utd relaxed on Bryan Mbeumopublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 16 June

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport chief football news reporter

There are a lot of rumours and counter rumours but I am not getting the impression Manchester United are concerned about their attempt to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford falling through.

Tottenham are keen on Mbeumo, who spoke to Sky Sports yesterday from the pit lane ahead of the F1 race in Montreal.

Mbeumo made it clear he did not want to talk about his future but did say he wished his old boss Thomas Frank good luck at Tottenham.

That could be interpreted in many ways - but mainly shows Mbeumo is on holiday and no deal around him is likely to be done in the near future.

United are looking to beef up their forward line, and have been linked with a number of centre forwards, although Rasmus Hojlund said on international duty recently that he wants to stay with the Old Trafford club.

Earlier this month, it was certainly looking like Bryan Mbuemo was heading for a move to Manchester United.

But Thomas Frank leaving Brentford to become the new Tottenham manager might have provided a twist in the Bees striker's transfer tale, with Spurs also now among those interested in the player.

Here's BBC Sport chief football news reporter Simon Stone with an update on the situation...

I don’t care who signs who from here on in. Hands down the best transfer of the summer has to be Brentford signing Kelleher from Liverpool for £12.5m, without doubt.

If Arsenal are looking to add goals, then they could do worse than buy Jack Grealish for more creativity alongside a recognised number nine. A midfield of Rice, Odegaard and Grealish would tear most teams apart and along with Saka lay goals on a plate for a decent striker.

Norway has produced some big names in football in recent years with the likes of Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard familiar names to English football fans.

And 18-year-old midfielder Sverre Nypan from Norwegian side Rosenborg has quickly drawn comparisons with Arsenal captain Odegaard after agreeing a transfer to Manchester City, with him playing in the same position and being from the same country.

Nypan has been largely deployed as a central midfielder in Norway but can also operate as an attacking midfield, winger or in a centre-forward role.

He is also comfortable using either foot, is quick, a good dribbler and able to take on and beat a defender.

Like Nypan, Odegaard also made his debut in the Norwegian top flight aged 15 but the Arsenal midfielder remains the competition's youngest debutant having done so at the age of 15 years and 118 days for Stromsgodset in 2014.

  20. Who is Man City target Nypan?published at 12:45 British Summer Time 16 June

Sverre Halseth Nypan from Rosenborg, who is on his way to Manchester City, is the latest talent to come out of Norway.

Nypan became the youngest player to represent Rosenborg at the age of 15 and later the youngest player to score for the club at 16 - and he has now racked up 70 appearances and scored 14 goals.

The highly rated Nypan, who spent two years at Rosenborg's academy, was training with their first team at the age of 14 and became a Norway Under-21 international a year later.

Having stepped up to the club's first team in 2022, Nypan has made a huge impression in the Norwegian top flight and was named young player of the year in 2023 and 2024.

"Nypan has been regarded as one of the best talents in Norway and been playing at a very high level despite being so young," Norwegian journalist Andreas Korssund told BBC Sport.

"He's been looked at as the next big thing from the Norwegian league, so it's not a surprise he's securing such a big move."
