    Viktor Gyokeres

    Age: 27

    Current club: Sporting

    National team: Sweden

Stats: Gyokeres, who was a Brighton player between 2018 and 2021, has scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting since moving to them from Coventry City in 2023.

During the 2024-25 season, the Sweden striker scored 54 goals in 52 appearances for the Portuguese side, averaging more than a goal per game.

Update: Manchester United and Arsenal have both been linked to Gyokeres during this transfer window but the Guardian are reporting that the striker is set to snub his former boss Ruben Amorim and United for Arsenal, who will offer him Champions League football.

But whether Mikel Arteta views the Swede as his first choice is still unclear.

Stats: Sesko bagged 13 goals and five assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances last season and was also on target in the Champions League four times.

Update: Arsenal have been linked with Sesko for a long time and BBC Sport's Alex Howell reported today that the Gunners' search for a striker is down to Viktor Gyokeres and Sesko. To add to that, Portuguese media outlet Record are reporting that Arteta's side think the asking price for Gyokeres is too high and instead with turn their focus on signing Sesko or Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa.

Wirtz and Frimpong chemistry will be legendary at Liverpool. And I reckon Cunha and Fernandes will be deadly this season and carry United back to Europe or at least a trophy; the one club that probably needs a major signing soon is Arsenal and they should keep trying for a striker too.

  4. Arsenal want Sesko over Gyokeres?published at 10:56 British Summer Time 16 June

Arsenal are in the market for a striker, who Mikel Arteta will hope could propel the Gunners to genuine Premier League and Champions League contenders.

And according to BBC Sport's Alex Howell, the two players Arteta has zeroed in on as targets for that role this summer are Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres, 27, and RB Leipzig's Slovenia forward Benjamin Sesko, 22.

However, they are likely to only sign one forward during the transfer window.

And a report in Portuguese outlet Record this week says that the Gunners think the asking price for Gyokeres is too high and instead, will focus on signing Sesko or Aston Villa's England forward Ollie Watkins, 29.

Sesko scored 13 goals and created five assists in 33 appearances in the Bundesliga last season while also netting four times in the Champions League.

Overall, he has scored 39 goals in 87 appearances for the club after signing from RB Salzburg in 2023.

Honestly don’t believe that Gyokeres or Sesko are the answer to Arsenal’s striker problems; Sesko looks like he’s levelling out to a one in three goal ratio and Gyokeres has scored goals in the Championship and Portugal, plus he’s 27. I reckon Watkins or Osimhen would be a much better buy

  6. Arsenal focusing on Sesko and Watkins after learning Gyokeres price - gossippublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 16 June

    Arsenal

Portuguese publication Record, external have reported that Arsenal believe Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres' asking price is too high, adding that the club might start to look elsewhere for attacking options.

The Gunners have a long-standing interest in the 27-year-old but could now look to sign 22-year-old RB Leipzig attacker Benjamin Sesko or 29-year-old Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins instead.

However, The Mirror, external believe the club are only looking to bring one forward to the Emirates this summer.

Arsenal have been one of the most talked-about clubs in the transfer market without actually completing a deal.

The Gunners' search for a striker is down Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko and they are closing on a deal for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea who will compete with Spanish compatriot David Raya.

Nice to see your list of players expected to make the biggest impact is just the same few clubs the BBC always focus on. I think Charly Alcaraz will have the biggest impact as a new signing but you don’t feature clubs like Everton so this won’t get a mention.

    Graham

We sure showed you, Graham... although Alcaraz did look vibrant at Everton last season, so this could be a good shout.

  9. Gyokeres to snub Man Utd for Arsenal - reportpublished at 10:36 British Summer Time 16 June

Another striker who has top clubs circling around him is Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting.

Gyokeres has scored a phenomenal 97 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese club, also contributing 26 assists during his time in Lisbon.

The Sweden forward also averaged more than a goal per game in the season just gone, with 54 in 52 appearances.

Manchester United has been touted as a potential destination with former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim interested in reuniting with the former Brighton striker.

However, the Guardian reported on Saturday that Gyokeres is set to snub United for a move to their Premier League rivals Arsenal as he wants to play in the Champions League.

"Whether Mikel Arteta views the Swede as his first-choice centre-forward recruit is unclear as he is thought to prefer the 22-year-old Benjamin Sesko at RB Leipzig," the report says.

Sporting value the prolific striker at about £68m.

My suspicion is that Cunha will be written about more than the others. TBF most of that will be in the referee's notebook and PGMOL reports, but hey, any publicity is good publicity!

Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, external are reporting that Manchester United have already made a decision over who to sell between strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

The club are looking to sell one of their centre forwards, after Matheus Cunha's arrival from Wolves, and it is believed they want to keep hold of 24-year-old Zirkzee.

Away from the Club World Cup, Concacaf Gold Cup and the European Under-21 Championship, there are a few other football tournaments going on.

The prestigious Under-20 Tournoi Maurice Revello concluded in France yesterday, with the host nation beating Saudi Arabia in Sunday's final.

Manchester United striker Chido Obi missed out on the main prizes, as Denmark finished third in the competition, but his two goals in the group stage were enough to win the organisers' 'Special Award' which is pretty good for a 17-year-old.

United boss Ruben Amorim wasn't expecting Chido to make the progress he did last season, which is why he wasn't picked in the Europa League squad for the knockout rounds when it was submitted in February.

Chido ended up making eight senior appearances this season, seven as a substitute. While he didn't score in any of those appearances, he did find the net on the club's post-season trip to Hong Kong.

With United determined to strengthen their striking department, it will be fascinating to see what 2025-26 has in store for the former Arsenal youngster.

Re Tim, 09:10. I think you're right about Cunha and wrong about Wirtz. Any decent player will have a positive impact on Manchester Utd - no decent player could fail in that mission as Utd are so poor. But wait a while and like all good players his form will dip and like those before him he'll have to leave to succeed. Old Trafford is a graveyard for good players and managers.

    Alan, West Sussex

Nothing like a bit of United optimism and hypocrisy on a Monday morning to brighten up the week is there. Cunha apparently having the biggest impact as United had no attacking directness, but every United fan will insist that Burno Fernandes is the best attacking midfielder in the league if not the world. Cunha will bring more bad attitude to a club that already can’t handle strong personalities. I think Ait-Nouri could be a fantastic signing for City though.

    Brentford

    Bryan Mbeumo

    Age: 25

    Position: Striker

    Current club: Brentford

    National team: Cameroon

Stats: Mbeumo, who has bagged 70 goals since his arrival at Brentford in 2019, scored 20 times for the Bees in the Premier League last season.

Update: Earlier this month, BBC Sport reported that the Brentford striker was subject of a bid from Manchester United of £45m and £10m in add-ons, but last week Tottenham, now under new manager Thomas Frank, are interested in signing Mbeumo, who worked under Frank at the Bees.

EPSN, external have revealed Manchester United have a back-up plan ready for if they fail to land 25-year-old Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo this summer.

The Red Devils will reportedly turn their attention to signing either 25-year-old Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo or 26-year-old Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze.

You’ve gone too early with your who’s going to make the most impact question! Mbuemo will go to Spurs now and he will make the most impact, Utd don’t need him anyway it’s not like they have European football to contend with.

  18. Man Utd and Spurs to battle for Mbeumo?published at 10:00 British Summer Time 16 June

Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford celebratesImage source, Getty Images

Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo looks to be in high demand this summer after bagging 20 goals and eight assists in 38 Premier League appearances for the Bees last season.

The Cameroon international has 70 goals in 242 appearances for the club since arriving in west London in 2019 from Ligue 2 club Troyes.

And it was looking like Mbuemo was on the way to becoming Ruben Amorim's second summer signing at Manchester United following the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m.

He was the subject of a bid from United of £45m and £10m in add-ons, but no agreement was reached between the two clubs with the offer falling well short of Brentford's valuation.

And with Thomas Frank moving to Tottenham last week, he has found a new suitor.

BBC Sport's Sami Mokbel reported on Friday of Spurs' interest in Mbuemo though they are yet to submit a bid while there has been further interest in him from other Champions League clubs on the continent.

It is understood there is no release clause in Mbeumo's contract, which still has a year left to run, although there is the option to extend it by another year.

  19. Don't expect quick exits at Man Utdpublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 16 June

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport chief football news reporter

The most obvious departures are the players who finished last season out on loan and are deemed surplus to requirements.

Yet is it conceivable further deals for Marcus Rashford, Antony or Jadon Sancho could be done early? Probably not.

Indeed, the wages at United are so high, and the performances have been so far below expectations, it is not clear to see what deals might be done quickly.

Alejandro Garnacho has been told he can leave, which suggests he will not return for pre-season training early in July.

There is interest in the young Argentina international. The same is also true of England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, although United are more minded to keep him.

Turkey goalkeeper Altay Bayindir might be one to watch. He now knows he will not be United's first choice, having lost out to Andre Onana in the Europa League final and, in World Cup year, is eager to get regular first-team football again.

Re Tim, 09:10. I don't entirely disagree with the Cunha impact point. Great player, won't fix all the inherent problems of Utd. But to suggest Bundesliga players have not really succeeded (mainly a list of Utd flops) is wrong. Some names that come to mind: Kevin De Bruyne, Aubameyang, Haaland...

    Patrick, Hastings

RE Tim… if Cunha is that good that he’s going to make that big an impact, how come Wolves were one of only a handful of teams that finished below United last season?!

    Tom, London

Agreed with Tim from Devon. As a huge LFC fan, can’t wait to see Wirtz explode onto the PL.. however the biggest impact will surely be Cunha? If he stays trouble free and fit, can see him galvanise United and give them that killer instinct they’ve been lacking for years. Back into the top six for them (unfortunately!)
