  2. Is time running out for Postecoglou?published at 15:29 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2024

    Rangers v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)

The adoration of Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham is about as predictable and stable as his team's results and performances.

Against Chelsea, they were brilliant at the start and bizarre by the end. It is sad to see 'Angeball' suddenly looking so naive when the system breaks down or - more specifically - when the constant high-octane effort needed for it to work blows a gasket.

Postecoglou needs a squad with the depth and energy of Chelsea's to play his style in the Premier League. I am pretty sure he has figured this out by now - he isn't dim - so what should he do?

‌He can ask for more intensity from the players, but though they will give him it most of the time, they clearly can't always do so.

Can he change his method? Absolutely not - he has underlined that this particular red line will never be crossed.

‌Can he wait for squad reinforcements next season that might allow his plans to work? Maybe he can but the club and the fans may not be so patient, especially if they linger too long where they are right now in the bottom half of the [Premier League] table.

  3. 'Rangers will feel this is a good time to play Tottenham'published at 15:27 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2024

    Rangers v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)

Livingston defender Ryan McGowan feels Rangers may see tonight's Europa League game as "a good time" to play Tottenham.

Philippe Clement's side are one place above Spurs in the Europa League table in eighth, a position that if they stay in will guarantee qualification to the knockout stages at Spurs' expense.

With former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou struggling to exact consistency from his Tottenham team, McGowan says Rangers will fancy their chances.

"They'll be looking at Tottenham thinking this is a good opportunity or a good time to play them," McGowan told the Scottish Football Daily podcast: "They've not been getting the results they've probably wanted and they will not be looking forward to coming to Ibrox with how well Rangers do in Europe especially.

"It means it is leading into a cracking game because Rangers are in a good vein of form. They're feeling confident and Spurs will be feeling the heat a tiny bit. They also know that if they do play to their capabilities that that they should be winning the game. So it sets it up perfectly Thursday night."

Nottingham Forest v Aston Villa (Sat, 17:30GMT)

    Nottingham Forest

Let's leave the final word of this burst of Premier League news conferences to Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

On missing injured players, he said: "Absence of any players, even those not involved in the game, are very important. OLne of them out makes a change. It means less options, I hope we have as many options [as possible] available this season."

On people talking about European football spots: "I'm not listening to that to be honest, but I don’t go too much outside my house. What I see is happy people. I say let's enjoy the journey, stick to principles of the club. My job is to prepare the players to compete."

Speaking after the club's loss to West Ham on Monday, Gary O'Neil spoke about what he has already achieved as Wolves manager, saying: "I understand the noise and scrutiny, but when I arrived at this football club, it had just achieved 39 points in the Premier League.

"This summer we lose our captain, Max Kilman, and Pedro Neto for a combined £100m and we sign a load of young lads, who will be great for the club in the future. That is where the football club is."

Despite being in the running for the Premier League manager of the month for November, O'Neil's side have lost their past three games, conceding 10 goals in the process.

But O'Neil added: "I'm confident we can turn it around. It's not my decision but I know I'm a better coach then I was last year. I've learned an awful lot.

"All I can ask the group is to be the best version of themselves. I know I can get the best out of this group."

  13. Derby postponement 'a blow to everyone'published at 15:07 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2024

Arsenal v Everton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Everton

Sean Dyche had started his news conference by fielding questions on last weekend's Merseyside derby, which was called off because of the poor weather conditions caused by Storm Darragh.

It was due to be the last ever league game against Liverpool to be played at Goodison Park before Everton move into a new stadium next season.

"Obviously we all wanted to play the game but safety had to play its part," said Dyche. "I was here in the morning and the wind was horrendous to be honest. So they had to call it and that was a blow for everyone I think because everyone was gearing up for it.

"We had come off a big result in the week [a 4-0 win at home to Wolvers] as well, which added more to the feel of it.

"It was a blow for sure, I think all parties wanted it to be played but safety had to come first and I understand why. We park that and move forwards until the next time."

No new date has been set for the postponed game.

Dyche also confirmed that Michael Keane has "come through" his injury after being "touch and go" for the last match, but Tim Iroegbunam and James Garner will still be a "little while".

  16. Martin's frustration with supporters after ironic cheerpublished at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2024

    Southampton

Earlier, Southampton boss Russell Martin explained and defended his side's style of play, which is often recognised by playing out from the back.

It's a tactic that some fans haven't completely bought into and the conflict of opinions came to a head in Southampton's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last week.

In his post-match interview with BBC Radio Solent, Martin appeared to criticise the fans for their reaction - cheering ironically - as goalkeeper Joe Lumley opted to 'go long', instead of playing short.

He said: "We played out and got pressed just before that, which then makes Joe [Lumley] kick and it gets a cheer from our supporters, and we concede within about 10 seconds, so it is what it is."

  20. The 'Principles of Play' derbypublished at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2024

Southampton v Tottenham (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

Russell Martin issues instructions to his Southampton playersImage source, Getty Images

Russell Martin has been criticised for his stubborn refusal to compromise on style after leading his side up from the Championship last season.

Defenders are urged to play out from the back, but many of the 31 goals Southampton have conceded in the Premier League have followed mistakes at the back from errant passes or players being caught in possession.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has also been criticised for refusing to adapt his own philosophy, which has led to Sunday's encounter between the two sides at St Mary's being dubbed the "Principles of Play" derby.
