Curiously perhaps a chunk of the problem at City rests with buying Haaland. With him in the team it's all gone a bit route one - get him the ball as quickly as possible and hope he bangs in enough goals to win the game. Knowing you're leaking at the back. But that's not Pep's style and I imagine he'd be happier working with Palmer, Alvarez, Cancelo even, building a fluid, possession based system.

  3. 'They have not performed to the level, they know that'published at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time

    Juventus 2-0 Man City

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City and Tottenham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think it's anything new, it has been there for some weeks now that people have been saying 'is it a blip?' or 'is it a crisis?'. Everybody can say what they want but it's a major worrying time.

Is it a concern? Yeah of course it is. The players have to find a solution, so does the manager very, very quickly.

The players are hurting, they've had it so good. They have to find find a way, that's just what it is. They have not performed to the level, they know that. I think they will get stronger when some of the players and the squad is a bit better over time.

  4. Juventus vs Man City xGpublished at 10:28 Greenwich Mean Time

    Juventus 2-0 Man City

Despite falling to a 2-0 defeat by Juventus and the world seemingly crashing down around the feet of Manchester City - the expected goals (xG) for the game doesn't make for that bad viewing.

City actually had a higher xG for the game than Juventus and boasted more shots than their hosts.

On another day things could have looked very different.

  5. 'Bright future' for Lewis-Skellypublished at 10:24 Greenwich Mean Time

    Arsenal 3-0 Monaco

    Gary Cahill
Former Chelsea and Aston Villa defender on the Football Daily podcast

The manager obviously has a lot of faith in him [Myles Lewis-Skelly] to start him in a game like that with Kieran Tierney on the bench. He had other options and he chose to go with the young boy. It looks like he has a very bright future at 18-years-old.

It's interesting to hear Bukayo Saka speak about him like he is 35 [himself] when he is only 23 still. He impresses me so much, Saka. The way he carries himself. The way he performs. Everything he does at 23-years-old is unreal.

Going back to Myles Lewis-Skelly, what a terrific Champions League debut, 18 years of age, he's got a bright future.

For all the hype about Man City not winning, who's to say that Arsenal won't hit that same rough patch at some point? The big teams are too over reliant on their star players, and it always comes back to haunt them at some stage. If Saka gets injured, suddenly the Gunners seem to struggle. Maresca at Chelsea has it right. Rotate the squad, give others a chance, gives the team more hunger, and they reap the rewards.

    Juventus 2-0 Man City

    Gary Cahill
Former Chelsea and Aston Villa defender on the Football Daily podcast

They are only human, they've won four titles in a row, which is unreal and set the standards that they have which is why everyone's making such a big fuss. They lose a handful of games and all of a sudden it's the end of the world. There is still an element in me that is waiting for it to turn again and they go on some unbelievable run.

Mike S: Sorry Pat Nevin but your comment on City is ludicrous. You say "it's only a tiny little drop, it's tiny". The results don't lie. The love-in with Pep amongst some pundits is being exposed for its naivety. Pep has never been tested in the fire of adversity. He's melting right now.

  11. How long is Rodri injured for?published at 09:57 Greenwich Mean Time

Manchester City midfielder Rodri suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in City's 2-2 draw with Arsenal in September.

The injury is expected to keep him out for the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign, however, speaking last month, the Spaniard stated that he is "aiming to return this season."

"Now the seasons are getting longer and the Club World Cup ends on 13 July, I have in mind to return this year, as a challenge," he told Spanish show COPE.

"I've already started walking, and I feel better mentally than I thought I would."

This season's Premier League concludes on Sunday, 25 May.

It can't be coincidence that City's recent poor form coincides with the clubs trial for its 130 charges? Something like that would surely affect everyone at the club in some capacity? Maybe the trial isn't going as well for City as they hoped and this has leaked though to the team? Whatever it is the team don't look anything like they were last year.

  13. Haaland touch map vs Juventuspublished at 09:47 Greenwich Mean Time

    Juventus 2-0 Man City

Nothing amplifies Manchester City's frustration in the final third against Juventus more than the touch map of Erling Haaland.

The striker had just 18 touches of the ball in 90 minutes against the Italian side, the least out of anyone that started the game.

In fact, the player with next fewest was goalkeeper Ederson with 38, while the closest outfield player to him was Jeremy Doku with 47.

The amount of times that Haaland picked the ball up deep shows just how frustrating of a night it was for the forward, with five even coming in his own half.

    • Man City have lost seven of their past 10 matches across all competitions (W1 D2), as many defeats as they had suffered in their previous 105 matches combined (7).
    • City have gone eight games without a clean sheet away from home in all competitions; the joint-longest such run of Pep Guardiola’s managerial career (also a run of eight in October 2016).

If a group of players win everything, they lose hunger. If a group of players hear the same ideas for years on end, they stop responding. Sir Alex Ferguson knew this, completely replenished his team every 4/5 years. Pep can't be considered at his level until he not only builds a great team, but rebuilds one too. He's never done that in his career. Fresh players, or fresh ideas.

  16. 'They're not what they were'published at 09:32 Greenwich Mean Time

    Juventus 2-0 Man City

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on the Football Daily podcast

If it was one simple thing, Pep Guardiola would have sorted it. A lot of things have happened at the same time. Rodri not playing, not controlling the game, that makes a huge difference, first of all.

Second of all, I think for a period of time, they've had full-back problems, the second goal was an absolute stick-on of where your problem is there, particularly if you tell one of them to play centre midfield and they get lost.

Because of the respect that we've got for Manchester City and of the players and of what Pep Guardiola's done, it is true, they're not what they were because they're getting older and they can't get around the pitch quickly.

They're not as good players as they were, not as sharp or zippy. It's only a tiny little drop, it's tiny.

Good morning, Chelsea fan here, as an outsider looking in, I believe City's woes are an amalgamation of things, but the two main issues are no legs in midfield. Gundogan, Silva, De Bruyne all past their best, Lewis too lightweight. Secondly, their model of playing from the back falls flat on its face without Rodri, he was always an outlet and a calming presence to the defenders. Tough times for Pep but as every great manager does, he will come through it.

Every team needs a strong leader to succeed. This applies not just to football, but to life in general. And this is what Saka provides for his team despite his young age. If Arsenal are to win a trophy this season, it will be thanks to Saka’s leading of the group.
