Bristol City and Charlton Athletic played out a goalless draw at Ashton Gate in a game which saw the sides register only three shots on target between them.

The best chance of the match fell to Bristol City's Anis Mehmeti who hit the woodwork in the second half with a well-struck effort.

The Robins and newly promoted Charlton were both victorious in their opening Championship games last weekend as they got their campaigns underway.

The first opportunity fell to the home side, who were energised by a packed crowd at Ashton Gate, as Mehmeti received possession and drove forward before shooting narrowly wide.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder continued to look dangerous throughout the opening stages, racing in behind the Charlton back line but defender Kayne Ramsay was on hand to provide a super tackle and prevent a shot on goal.

Bristol City dominated the possession and shots in the first half but neither side was able to manage a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

Charlton started the second half well and came close as Rob Apter fired a dangerous effort but Robins keeper Radek Vítek got down well to make the stop.

Mehmeti was agonisingly close to opening the scoring just before the hour mark as he thundered a shot off the post.

Vítek produced a fine stop moments later to keep the score level, clawing the ball onto the post to prevent an own goal as George Tanner nearly put it into his own net.

As the game went into seven minutes of added time, Charlton summer signing Harvey Knibbs had a close-range chance smothered by Vítek.

Jones 'really proud' of Charlton performance

Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones told BBC Radio London:

"It's a great point, especially after the result they had last week and the talent they have.

"Defensively we were outstanding and I really felt we were going to win it, I couldn't see them scoring or breaking us down.

"We've adapted to the Championship really quickly, I'm just really disappointed we didn't get all three, I loved watching us second half.

"I'm so proud of us because we have shown we can compete at Championship level now."

Bristol City 'can improve' - Struber

Bristol City boss Gerhard Struber told BBC Radio Bristol:

"We expected a really difficult game, it was a 50-50 game in the end and this is not what we wanted.

"We can improve and we have some good learning points from this, the opponent played very direct with lots of long balls today.

"In the end it is a point that we take with the clean sheet, our behaviour in defence is on a very good level at the moment."
