    Aaron McLean
Ex-Peterborough striker on BBC Final Score

BBC Final Score pundit Aaron McLean has been impressed by Stoke's start to the season under Mark Robins:

“I think it was smart to bring Mark Robins to the club in the first place, his record over the years has been outstanding and he’s somebody who can get a club going. We saw what he did with Coventry.

“A lot of new bodies through the door but he seems to be getting a song out of them. They’ve gelled really quickly.

“We’re only a couple of games in but it could have been a difficult day today, playing against Sheffield Wednesday who have got their own issues. Sometimes that can galvanise a squad.

“Stoke had to go there and make sure they did a professional job.”

  8. 'Early worries for Leicester'published at 17:46 British Summer Time 16 August

    FT: Preston 2-1 Leicester

    Will Perry
    BBC Final Score reporter

Very early doors but early season worries for Leicester City who scraped past 10 man Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day, got knocked out of the EFL Cup on penalties by third tier Huddersfield Town (having named a strong starting XI) and were deservedly beaten by a team who survived by just a point on the on final day of last season, in Preston.

Well over an hour without a shot on target, Marti Cifuentes has plenty of work to do on that training ground to convince people that Leicester can bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Full credit however for Preston who will want to forget the last miserable campaign. They scored two cracking goals and with the addition of exciting young Tottenham loanee Alfie Devine in their ranks - could this finally be the year Preston fans?!

A penalty incident that wasn't given could have cost Portsmouth a point against Norwich.

After an opening day win at Oxford, Portsmouth's return to league action at Fratton Park ended in a 2-1 home defeat by Norwich City and boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:

"I'm really disappointed with the result, there's a lot to unpack, there wasn't a huge amount in the game apart from being really poor around some of the set pieces, I think we lacked some belief coming into the game.

"We apologetically defended the first one to allow Darling to have a free header in the box and that isn't good enough.

"We end the game scratching our heads as to why we didn't get an equaliser, there is definite contact in the late challenge on Connor Ogilvie, It's a definite penalty and I'll speak to the referee and find out why he didn't give it.

Norwich City boss Liam Manning reflects on his first Championship win of the season.

Norwich City got their first win under boss Liam Manning but were left hanging on towards the end at Fratton Park.

"I'm exhausted to be totally honest, I feel the same emotion as everyone else watching it,2 Manning told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"Coming to Fratton Park is so difficult, you only have to look at their form here last season and also the fact that they're such a consistent side.

"I think we really stood up to a tough test today and showed a real resilience and fighting spirit that will allow us to be in games this season, there's some real positives to take from today.

"We know how important our set pieces are so credit to the lads for taking it on board, we started the game really well and made it difficult for them."

    FT: Wrexham 2-3 West Brom

Wrexham boss Phil ParkinsonImage source, Rex Features

Wrexham's first home game in the second tier for 43 years ended in disappointment despite levelling through Lewis O'Brien and it's back-to-back league defeats to start the season:

"I think between both boxes we were decent, we showed good control in our play with and without the ball," Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson told BBC Sport.

"But the game was won and lost in both boxes. The goals we conceded today were too soft, it's as simple as that.

"We've just handed them goals today by not dealing with the situation. Football never changes, it's about what happens in and around the boxes."

It's two wins from two Championship games for West Brom under new boss Ryan Mason as they proved to be the better side in North Wales and Mason spoke to BBC Sport:

"I thought we were excellent. We deserved to win the game and it's been a hell of a long time (November 10, 2024 - 2-1 at Hull City) since we won away from home in this league.

"It's very nice to get that feeling inside the changing room.

"We came here with the right mindset and willingness to get a victory. We stood up as a team and as a squad."

West Brom, along with Stoke City and Middlesbrough are the sides with 100% records from their two games - Southampton will join them tomorrow if they win at Ipswich.

Derby County head coach John Eustace speaks after the Coventry City match.

It's successive defeats to start the season for Derby County and boss John Eustace is particularly upset with their defending against Coventry today:

"Really disappointing to lose. I was proud of the effort of the group again. They were 100% committed. But we needed to be a lot better, especially when we go 3-2 up," Eustace told BBC Radio Derby.

"We've got to defend the box better. It's something we haven't done well enough during pre-season and in the first couple of games. It's something that we've got to keep working on.

"That's not what we're all about. We're always hard to play against, always defend the box for our lives - this is our DNA. In the last two games we just haven't done that well enough.

"The positives to come out of the game were three goals - to go behind twice and come back showed great character. So we've got that fighting spirit, we've just got to be better in both boxes."

The bottom 10 in the ChampionshipImage source, Opta

It is ridiculously early in the season but the Championship table does not make good reading for the city of Sheffield.

Both Wednesday and United have lost their opening games and have identical records of one goal scored and five against.

The Owls were easily beaten by Stoke at a febrile Hillsborough. The Blades suffered a limp loss at Swansea.

Derby have also lost both games following their thrilling 5-3 defeat at home to Coventry at lunchtime.

Blackburn should have three points, but a narrow victory turned into a gut-wrenching home loss to Birmingham in injury time.

While Wrexham were given a bit of a lesson in the realities of Championship football in their 3-2 home loss to West Brom.

Oxford are also yet to pick up a point and they go to Hull tomorrow.

  15. 'The players were fantastic'published at 17:21 British Summer Time 16 August

    FT: Derby 3-5 Coventry

    Coventry

Quite a win for Coventry in a topsy-turvy lunchtime meeting at Pride Park and a nice way to start the weekend for Sky Blues' boss Frank Lampard against his former club:

"If it's not my favourite game since I've been here then it's right up there because of the character and quality - we kept playing and kept pushing and showed belief," Lampard told BBC Radio CWR.

"We won at a place a lot of people are going to find really tough. We were really sharp against a back five that don't give you any space.

"I'm just really pleased with the players. They have to have the belief at 3-2 down. An outstanding game from us.

"We scored a couple of real quality goals and I think that quality from us was the difference. The players were fantastic."

Top 10 in the ChampionshipImage source, Opta

Stoke City are sitting pretty after two rounds of the Championship with six goals and six points on the board. The last time they managed to win their first two games was in 2007 on their way to Championship promotion.

Middlesbrough enjoyed a brilliant win at Millwall to really give Rob Edwards a very early boost in his Boro reign as they also won a second consecutive game at the start of the season for the first time since Bryan Robson's opening season in charge in 1994.

While Ryan Mason has two wins from two at West Brom in his first permanent job as a number one. The Baggies haven't started a season that well since 2017.

That's a combined 57 years for these three clubs to do that. Stoke and Boro both went on to promotion when they last did it. West Brom were relegated.

Southampton could join them on two wins out of two if they win at Ipswich tomorrow lunchtime.

Bristol City and Charlton drew with each other, but Coventry, Birmingham, Preston and Norwich all got their first victories of 2025/26.

At 16 years and 37 days, Jeremy Monga is the youngest player to score in the Championship since the rebrand in 2004-05.

His goal today knocked a certain Jude Bellingham off that lofty perch.

Across the top four tiers, he’s the youngest player to score since Jordan Ibe for Wycombe Wanderers v Sheffield Wednesday in League One in October 2011.

Ibe was 15 years and 325 days when he scored that goal.

As at the end of the first half the home fans (those who remain) loudly applaud the Wednesday players from the pitch.

This was a game that showed what a difference a summer can make.

The away side, now top of the table for those counting, enjoyed a full pre-season schedule and added quality to their group with Wales international Sorba Thomas and Manchester City loanee Divin Mubama, both of whom were excellent here today.

Wednesday on the other hand saw wages delayed, their manager Danny Rohl leave and were unable to add a single signing because of registration restrictions, while several key senior players left.

You couldn't fault their application today but on this evidence it is going to be a long season for the Owls unless they can get things sorted off the pitch.
