Newcastle's winless start continues with draw at Leeds

Newcastle United fired a blank in a goalless draw at Leeds United as record signing Nick Woltemade watched on.

The Germany forward had to make do with a seat in the directors' box after his £69m move from Stuttgart was not completed in time to make his debut at Elland Road.

Newcastle certainly could have used some added firepower in the continued absence of Alexander Isak, who remains determined to join Liverpool before the transfer window shuts on Monday.

In truth, as the rain poured in Yorkshire, this was a game devoid of much goalmouth action.

Leeds did not have a shot on target until the closing stages while Newcastle did not test Lucas Perri until Jacob Murphy stung the Leeds goalkeeper's gloves just before half-time.

Murphy also forced Perri into a fine one-handed stop after he let fly with a swerving effort from 25 yards out in the second half, but Leeds held firm.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin even had a chance to potentially win it late on, but the Leeds substitute's strike was kept out by Nick Pope's foot.

Newcastle's wait for a first win of the season goes on, but Leeds will be delighted with this point as Daniel Farke's battling side bounced back from defeats against Sheffield Wednesday and Arsenal.

Newcastle analysis: Woltemade certainly needed

Howe has 'no idea' on Isak future

Three games. 34 shots. Two goals.

It is not hard to see why Newcastle have broken the club's transfer record to bring in Woltemade.

The watching striker, who scored 17 goals for Stuttgart last season, would certainly have loved to have got on the end of some of the crosses that Newcastle put into the box in the first half in particular.

However, Woltemade was not eligible so, with Anthony Gordon suspended and Isak absent, it fell to William Osula to the lead the line as the 22-year-old looked to build on his goalscoring cameo against Liverpool on his first league start for the club.

It was an evening when Newcastle got into some dangerous areas but, time and time again, there was no-one able to get on the end of a teasing delivery from the flank.

When Jacob Ramsey managed to pick out Osula after 15 minutes, Gabriel Gudmundsson was there to block the Dane's shot from inside the box.

A stretching Murphy, meanwhile, could only hook the ball back across goal after latching on to Ramsey's delivery before half-time.

Murphy looked Newcastle's biggest goal threat - forcing Perri into a couple of saves - but the visitors could not find a way through even after Eddie Howe introduced substitutes Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes in the second half.

Amid continued uncertainty about Isak's future, Woltemade may have to quickly hit the ground running.

Leeds analysis: Spirited hosts have fortress at Elland Road

Farke 'happy' with how competitive Leeds were

A response. How Leeds needed one. Not only did Farke's side suffer a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal last week, they crashed out of the Carabao Cup in a penalty shootout defeat against Championship side Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

You suspect Farke was glad to be back at Elland Road.

Leeds are going to have to find a way to pick up results on the road this season, but Farke's team will always have a chance on home soil, particularly with these fans behind them.

It is far from a coincidence that Leeds have not lost on their own turf in nearly a year. Though the overwhelming majority of these games have, obviously, been contested in the Championship, few top-flight sides will relish the trip to Elland Road.

Having dispatched Everton here on the opening weekend, Farke called on the club's "12th man" to "please stick with us" in his programme notes before the visit of Newcastle - and they did so from the off.

A rousing rendition of Marching on Together set the tone and Leeds players did not show Newcastle undue respect.

Nothing typified that spirt quite like a crunching tackle from Sean Longstaff on former team-mate Bruno Guimaraes, which was roared enthusiastically by the home support.

Leeds battled throughout, limiting Newcastle to just a couple of efforts on target, and the visitors finished strongly following the introduction of substitutes Calvert-Lewin and Jack Harrison.

In truth, Leeds looked the likelier side to win the game late on, only for Pope to deny Calvert-Lewin.
