  2. What to keep an eye on this weekend in the Premier Leaguepublished at 15:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

    • Arsenal could cut the gap at the top of the Premier League to three points on Saturday evening with victory over Brighton. The Gunners are in action 24 hours before leaders Liverpool and the opportunity to apply some pressure at the summit
    • Regardless of whether or not Arsenal cut the gap for 24 hours, Liverpool have the chance to heap more misery on Ruben Amorim and Manchester United. Amorim has won just one of the last six in the Premier League (five losses) and another defeat could, remarkably, edge them closer to the drop zone
    • Tottenham and manager Ange Postecoglou are desperate having won just one of the last seven in the Premier League but they will have to beat one of the division's form teams in Newcastle if they are to do so
    • The division's bottom three all need wins and need them fast if they are to get out of danger, especially Southampton, who could finish the day as much as 13 points adrift of safety

Speculation around the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold rumbles on and of course, the question was posed to manager Arne Slot in today's news conference about a potential exit for the full-back this month.

While Slot was vague when speaking about Real Madrid's interest, the Liverpool boss stated that Alexander-Arnold is "fully committed" and confirmed that he will start against Manchester United on Sunday.

  7. Recap: What did Slot & Amorim say before Liverpool v Man Utdpublished at 15:26 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

It's the big one one Sunday, Liverpool v Manchester United at Anfield. Two rivals at two very different ends of the table, but could the form book be thrown out of the window come kick-off?

Arne Slot spoke about the form of Ruben Amorim's side and claimed they are "better than the league table suggests."

Amorim believes his team are capable to "win any game" and said that "anything can happen" when the two face off on Sunday.

  8. Southampton complete Welington signingpublished at 15:24 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Southampton have formally completed the signing of Brazilian defender Welington, who had previously signed a pre-contract agreement with the club.

The 23-year-old left-back agreed personal terms with Saints in the summer, staying with São Paulo until the expiry of his contract at the end of the Brazilian season.

Welington made 48 appearances in all competitions during the campaign, as São Paulo finished sixth, taking his career total to 164 games for the club.

A Brazil Under-23 international, he won the Copa do Brasil in 2023 and the Supercopa do Brasil in 2024 during his time with São Paulo, where he made his debut aged 19.

Welington will now join up with the Saints first-team squad and wear the number 34 shirt at St Mary’s.

  9. Celtic have held talks to re-sign Tierneypublished at 15:21 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Celtic have held talks to re-sign their former defender Kieran Tierney on a pre-contract deal from Arsenal.

The 27-year-old left Celtic in 2019 for a reported £25million fee but Arsenal are now ready to let him leave at the end of his contract - as his career in English football has been blighted by injuries.

Amid interest from Celtic and a host of other clubs in Europe, it remains unclear whether Arsenal will let Tierney leave on loan in January before making any move permanent in the summer.

But there is a lot of goodwill towards Tierney in north London – as the Scotland international is considered a model professional – unfortunately unable to reach his highest level due to injury.

Tierney has still made 125 appearances for Arsenal over the course of his five-year contract, which included a loan spell at Real Sociedad, with his last appearance coming in the quarter-final victory in the Carabao Cup in December against Crystal Palace.

However, he has also suffered 10 injuries, including shoulder and knee injuries which required surgery to fix and a serious hamstring injury in June.

Isak would be mad to go to Arsenal. His free scoring style would be nullified after a couple of months working with Arteta.

  11. Sutton prediction - Southampton 1-2 Brentfordpublished at 15:18 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Southampton v Brentford (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton banner

This is a tough one to call because while Southampton are adrift at the bottom and absolutely desperate for points, Brentford are not in great form either.

Saints' new boss Ivan Juric has been quite feisty since his appointment, and his side have only been narrowly beaten in both his games in charge.

It is noticeable how often Southampton like to lump it now under Juric, compared to their possession-based style of play under Russell Martin.

However, while it is also clear they will put up a fight I don't see much changing for them results-wise.

Brentford are a battle-hardened Premier League team, so a direct approach will not faze them, and they also have goals in their team.

The Bees are yet to win on the road this season and only picked up their first away point against Brighton last time out but, this time, I see them taking all three.

  12. Team news - Chaplin out 'for couple of weeks'published at 15:15 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Fulham v Ipswich (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    Ipswich Town

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna on team news after a busy festive period: "Yeah it was a busier spell but that was nice.

"We have a few little injuries in the group. Conor Chaplin will be out for a couple of weeks. He caught a knock on his knee so he will be out for the next couple of weeks, unfortunately.

"But we also have a couple of little issues after the last game which we are still assessing coming into this one.

"A couple [of players] will be touch and go. It will be another really intense game so we need everyone to be in the best condition possible."

  13. Sutton prediction - Aston Villa 2-0 Leicesterpublished at 15:10 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Aston Villa v Leicester (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton banner

Aston Villa will be kicking themselves after conceding a late equaliser against Brighton - that was another late goal that cost me prediction points by the way.

I don't see Villa slipping up here, though, even without suspended duo Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers. Ollie Watkins will lead the line for them again - he has the jersey and will be looking to show why he should keep it when Duran is back from his ban.

Villa are strong at home while Leicester's away form is poor, with only one win and two draws from nine games on the road. They are in a relegation scrap and they are going to struggle to stay up.

The Foxes played pretty well against Manchester City last time out, and missed some good chances, but they still lost,

That defeat was their fourth in a row, and I am expecting Villa to make it five.

  14. 'Pau Torres has a broken metatarsal'published at 15:07 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Aston Villa v Leicester City (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery on team news: "Not Jhon Duran because he is suspended, not Pau Torres because he has a broken metatarsal and he is going to be out for more or less two months.

"Diego Carlos is also not ready for tomorrow, he has a small injury as well. Not Morgan Rogers because he is suspended with five yellow cards. Other players are in the squad and available for tomorrow."

  15. Emery on the transfer windowpublished at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Aston Villa v Leicester City (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery on the transfer window: "We are in the transfer window, the club is moving forward to try to increase our level in the squad, in case we can sign a new player and in case someone has to leave, we are open to do it. The most important to me is the match tomorrow. I am not going to speak a lot about the transfer window, because of my priorities as a coach."

  17. Sutton prediction - Fulham 1-0 Ipswichpublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Fulham v Ipswich (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton banner

Well done to Ipswich. I have got to give one of my daughter's teachers, Mr Fields, another mention here after the Tractor Boys beat Chelsea on Monday for their first home win of the season.

He will have had the bunting out, and the champagne too, and deservedly so.

As I've said before, I like this Ipswich team. They have got a lot about them and they are giving it a real go to try to stay in the Premier League.

You cannot underestimate the importance of them getting off the mark at Portman Road, but I don't see them following it up with another success on Sunday.

Fulham let me down badly by letting their lead slip late on at home to Bournemouth on Sunday, but they are usually pretty reliable at Craven Cottage.

Antonee Robinson and Alex Iwobi form such a wonderful combination down the left for Marco Silva's side, and I think they will help them secure a narrow home win.

  18. Team news - Reed nearing return, Berge & Nelson still outpublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Fulham v Ipswich (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva on team changes from Sunday's draw at home to Bournemouth: "Not big changes, really. Nice to see some players already around the team doing some more individual work. Harrison Reed is back in the sessions and needs time to get the right fitness to be ready and to be confident again. Sander [Berge] needs a bit longer, as Reiss [Nelson] does as well. The other players are the same as in the last game."

On a timeframe for Berge and Nelson's return: "Difficult to say. I really believe that Sander is going to be closer. I don't want to give you a timeline but he is going to be close - if not the FA Cup game then probably the other [next game] he is probably going to be in contention to be in the team. Reiss will take more, before the end of the month maybe, or, if not, then maybe just in February."

United will have more legs in midfield as Ugarte returns from a 1 match ban, as does Fernandes who love him or hate him is the only creative force in United's squad. Just hope he keeps his petulance in check at Anfield and focuses on creating some chances for the forwards and maybe contributing with a long overdue goal of his own!
