Summary

  1. Fofana 'could be out for the season'published at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Crystal Palace v Chelsea (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on injury updates: "Reece [James] is back from the last game. Romeo [Lavia] is very close, starting to work with us. The rest is not any update.

"Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is still out. Wesley [Fofana] will be out for a very long time and Benoit [Badiashile] will be out at least until February. Only two big updates are on Wes and Benoit, they will both be out for a very long time."

The Blues boss confirmed Fofana is a hamstring injury and added: "He could be out for the season, yes. We don’t know exactly but could be out for part of the season.

"We are together here since we start and every time you ask me about Wes I say many times - I am in love with Wes, I'm in love with Wes also because he is that kind of defender that gives you a chance to press and be aggressive in one on one on the pitch.

"Difficult to find that kind of player... So yes, Wes is a big loss."

  2. 'We will try to do something' - Amorim on transferspublished at 13:54 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Liverpool v Man Utd (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was tight-lipped on his plans for the transfer window: "I will keep that to myself. We will try to do something."

On whether he hopes to add to the number of midfield players: "I adapt all the time, we played most of the games with three, Bruno was in a different position but he was in the midfield. Sometimes it is not a big difference. I know people look at the three defenders but I don’t see the game like that. I adapt for every opponent so I will do the same with the same principles."

  3. 'There is always the opportunity to change for everybody'published at 13:53 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Tottenham v Newcastle (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on what he puts down the amount of injuries his team are suffering to: "I think it is probably a combination of different things. The amount of fixtures, the way we play. I guess the challenging thing for us is that quite a few of our injuries have been re-injuries which is something we're looking at. I don't think it is unique to us. I think you see it across the board with clubs but we've been hit sort of more extreme. [Guglielmo] Vicario, his isn't a muscle injury - his is long-term but that kind of exasperates the situation we are in."

On whether he would change his style in a bid to reduce injuries: "There is always the opportunity to change and the one constant with me is that I'm not going to in terms of my beliefs but there is always the reason to change and there is always the opportunity to change for everybody. I guess it just comes down to how much you believe in what you're doing and how much you believe what you're doing will bring you success."

  4. 'I have no doubt Tuchel will be impressed with Solanke'published at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Tottenham v Newcastle (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on Dominic Solanke: "Dom [Solanke] has been outstanding for us. He has scored goals but his all round game and capacity to help the team in all aspects of our football - defensively, link-up play, still being a presence in the box, really intelligent with his movement and really carrying that position on his back with no help and no rest.

"It says an enormous amount of his character and what kind of person he is. I can't speak highly enough of him. The load he has had to carry for us over the last two months without a lot of help from us allowing him to recover and yet he's still every week putting in a massive performance - I've got no doubt Thomas Tuchel will be impressed with him."

  5. Postecoglou 'unsure' whether signings are imminentpublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

Tottenham v Newcastle (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

The club is working hard on that. January is not an easy month, it's not an easy time to bring people in particularly quickly. At the same time, we want to do what is the best thing for us rather than panic and bring in people that are going to be a suitable fit."

On whether any signings are imminent: "I'm not really sure, could be imminent, could not be imminent, I'm not sure."

Tottenham v Newcastle (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

None of the injured lads are back yet. We've had a bit of an illness bug running through the camp too so a few have missed training but we'll be alright."

On whether anyone will be out through illness: "I'm not sure yet, we'll see."

On how close players are to returning: "Richarlison and Mikey [Moore] are the two next cabs off the rank - hopefully next week at some point. Ben [Davies], [Micky] Van de Ven and [Cristian] Romero all kind of the same time which is the back end of January."

Liverpool v Man Utd (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim on Joshua Zirkzee - the poor reception he received from fans when being substituted against Newcastle and subsequent reports linking the Netherlands striker with a move away from the club: "His situation is the same as the other players. He had that situation during a game, which is really hard for any player, but this can happen. They understand it is part of football. Sometimes you are in a good moment in your career, other times things don't happen the way you like.

"So he is focused, he trained very well, but we have to understand sometimes that the players feel that lack of confidence and then in the game they have difficult moments. We have to move on and pass to the next game."

On Maguire coming through a difficult period at United under previous manager Erik ten Hag: "It is the same as Josh [Zirkzee], there are moments in the career of a player that are different and I think he coped very well with his struggles and when you look at our team. He is a leader, he has to improve that part and he has to improve our game."

Russell, Brackley: Re: Richee (12:49) I think supporters of 99% of clubs would take issue with the idea that Arsenal fans have had to “endure bad times”. Found it tough finishing fifth a couple of times? Try League Two with Coventry or Luton!

Never mind 17 - at 20 years old I watched West Ham win the FA Cup for the third time in my short life. Some 45 years later I am still waiting for number four. Villa away next Friday in the third round, so roll on 2026.

Manchester United have midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte back from suspension for Sunday's trip to Liverpool, but defenders Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw remain on the sidelines because of injuries, while Mason Mount is also out.

Manager Ruben Amorim will certainly be asked about the availability of Marcus Rashford - the club's joint top scorer in the league - who was left out of the squad for four matches and was an unused substitute in Monday's 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle.

Rashford has featured heavily in today's newspapers, with reports that he has turned down three lucrative offers to join clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

I am not convinced Ruben Amorim is looking forward to his latest media assignment as he looks ahead to Manchester United's trip to Liverpool.

Matches at Anfield are an ordeal for United at the best of times.

After four games without a win and three without a goal, I can't imagine even the most optimistic fan would feel confident about the outcome.

Amorim is due to speak to us shortly.

At 17, I was amidst my A-levels, but watched Beckham single-handedly drag us to qualify for the 2002 World Cup with that unforgettable last minute free-kick against Greece, only for Ronaldinho to lob Seaman with a freekick of his own and knock us out of the tournament proper.
