Jarrod Bowen's injury is a huge blow for West Ham because he has been their best player this season. I thought the Hammers' displays were picking up, but then they got absolutely demolished by Liverpool.

So, this feels like a good time for Manchester City to play them as they look to build on their win at Leicester.

That was not a particularly pretty performance but that part does not matter for Pep Guardiola's side at the moment.

It is all about taking small steps for City as they try to find some form again, so it was important for them to see Erling Haaland back on the scoresheet against the Foxes, and to keep their first clean sheet in five games.

This game might be a similar story in that City will have to scrap a bit, but again I expect them to get the job done.

I turned 17 in November 1986. Big Ron had just been sacked at United and replaced by a very successful manager from Scotland! Happy times were coming! (How I miss them!!)

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has made it perfectly clear he wants to bring new faces into the club this month to help them out in what has been an incredibly testing few weeks.

Yet, even for a club of City's size, success and wealth, doing deals is not straight forward.

Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush has scored 18 goals so far this season. The Egyptian is a player City like.

The same is also true of Atalanta's Brazilian midfielder Ederson.

Yet Eintracht are battling for a Champions League place in the Bundesliga and Atalanta are top of Serie A and in with a shot at winning the title for the first time in their history. What is the financial incentive for either club to sell now?

Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov may be a more realistic target given the 20-year-old is with French club Lens but I am told a deal is a long way off at the moment.

The crisis that had been facing Manchester City does to have calmed slightly in recent weeks.

While there form is still hardly anything to write home about, the constant run of defeats does appear to have calmed with just two in their last six in the Premier League.

The win against Leicester last time out may not have been pretty, but they got the job done, something they have found frustratingly difficult recently.

Here is City's form in their last six Premier League games.

    • Leicester 0-2 Man City
    • Man City 1-1 Everton
    • Aston Villa 2-1 Man City
    • Man City 1-2 Man Utd
    • Crystal Palace 2-2 Man City
    • Man City 3-0 Nottingham Forest

Man City v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, defensive duo John Stones and Ruben Dias plus midfielder Matheus Nunes all missed the 2-0 victory against Leicester on 29 December.

Manager Pep Guardiola was vague in his news conference prior to that game in regards to their availability but it is thought that all may have a chance to come back into the fold on Saturday.

We'll keep you across any update we get on those and any others from Guardiola's news conference that is coming up at 12:30 GMT.

Jesse Lingard was the last player to score a goal for Manchester United against Liverpool at Anfield - on 16 December 2018!

Since then, Mohamed Salah has netted five times in the fixture.

A lot of Fantasy Premier League managers' success this week will depend on how they tackle the Liverpool v Manchester United fixture.

The past four games at Anfield have finished 0-0, 7-0, 4-0 and 0-0.

So there's a fantasy bonanza waiting to happen but United could also park the bus.

Do you double up in defence or bring someone like Luis Diaz or Diogo Jota in?

  8. Is an early FPL wildcard worth it?published at 12:20 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

You may have spotted that the second wildcard chip is now available on the FPL website.

Is it worth playing it straight away?

Obviously, this is a team-dependent question. You may absolutely hate your team or be riddled with injuries.

But in most cases I'd say, 'Woah, hold your horses'.

    Why?

Firstly, both Mohamed Salah and Cole Palmer are owned by nearly seven-in-10 FPL managers.

With Bukayo Saka injured and Erling Haaland underperforming, they are the two key players. You probably own at least one already and there is not much to gain by betting against them - certainly at this stage of the season.

Secondly, we'll soon get confirmation of which week Everton v Liverpool is rescheduled to AND the assistant manager chip is available from gameweek 24.

The wildcard will be vital in setting up for these weeks if you can't get your team right with free transfers.

The message is to wait if you can, at least a few gameweeks, until we have more information, especially with a two-week break for the FA Cup on the way.

Much like Ethan Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly, when I was 17 I was playing in the Premier League. Shame it was only on my Game Boy Advance! Mind you, I'd like to see these fresh-faced youngsters try to beat me on that.

    Thomas Woods
    BBC Sport senior journalist

Matz Sels, Nottingham Forest, keeper, £4.8m - away at Wolves

Forest's miserly defence is aiming for a third straight clean sheet and takes on a Wolves side without banned talisman Matheus Cunha.

Since week 11, Cunha has been involved in 53% of Wolves' goals, scoring nine.

They could really struggle without him - alright, they still scored at Spurs when he had left the pitch but everyone does against Tottenham so it doesn't really count.

Josko Gvardiol, Manchester City, £6m - home to West Ham

Does anyone fancy West Ham to score at Etihad Stadium without the injured Jarrod Bowen pulling the creative strings?

I don't, so in comes Gvardiol who, despite the Gabriel hype, has the most goals for a defender this season.

The Croatian has had a league-high 28 shots this season, 23 of those in the box. So chances are he'll have at least one opportunity to score.

Antonee Robinson, Fulham, £5m - home to Ipswich

The American left-back might become a staple in this team. He has a league-high seven assists for a defender and, even after recent price rises, is great value.

Ipswich, despite a superb win over Chelsea last time, are the league's third-lowest scorers.

Dean Huijsen, Bournemouth, £4.4m - home to Everton

Everton are the clean-sheet gift that keeps on giving having failed to score in seven of their past nine games.

Bournemouth youngster Huijsen has made a big impact since earning a starting spot with three clean sheets - including two goal-scoring double-digit performances and nine bonus points.

He's a big threat from corners.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool, £7.2m - home to Manchester United

One game, one goal, 15 points and FPL managers are piling on to the Trent train!

The right-back has risen in price twice in two weeks. Before last week's haul at West Ham, he had only returned three times in 10 games but you sense a glut of points is coming.

Alexander-Arnold often scores in spurts and Manchester United's attack is nothing to fear on Sunday.

We all want a big win against Man United, but this fixture just does not produce what the form table says most of the time… I think Amorim will have something up his sleeve for Sunday.

    Chris

Call me cautious but I am concerned that LFC are already assumed the winners (by a ridiculous margin according to Chris Sutton) on Sunday! Complacency is our worst enemy and could bite us!

    Ian, Staffs

All in all with Utd's away record and the memories of the game last season where the world and its parents said Liverpool would run riot and it ended 0-0, there is no way this will be a Liverpool walk over.

  12. Midfield - FPL tips & team of the weekpublished at 12:12 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

    Thomas Woods
    BBC Sport senior journalist

    Bryan MbeumoImage source, Getty Images

Mohamed Salah (captain), Liverpool, £13.6m - home Manchester United

The Egyptian king has scored more Premier League goals (12) against United than any other player.

In the past, in a 'tricky' fixture like this, you might have considered sticking the captain's armband on another player but don't even think about it.

Bryan Mbeumo, Brentford, £7.7m - away at Southampton

Chapeau to those FPL managers who kept faith in Mbeumo after a run of just 15 points in five games between weeks 11 and 15.

He's the third highest midfield points scorer. Brentford get a lot of goals and they must fancy a first away win against leaky Southampton this week.

Luis Diaz, Liverpool, £7.6m - home to Manchester United

The Colombian produced the goods for this team in gameweek 19 and, given the six-day rest between the West Ham match and facing Manchester United on Sunday, it's likely Arne Slot gives him another start.

That's your only real concern with the likes of Diaz, Jota and Cody Gakpo in long-term FPL terms - will the points they score outweigh the occasions they are rested and give you a one-pointer?

Anthony Elanga, Nottingham Forest, £5.2m - away at Wolves

Forest keep surprising with their sensational season so far and they have FPL options all over the pitch.

Elanga is a great budget midfield pick with returns in his past four games and a cheaper alternative to team-mate Morgan Gibbs-White (£6.4m with five returns in five games).

Over those four matches, Elanga has had six shots on target, six in the box and three big chances - the most of any Forest midfielder.

Six days after my 17th birthday - 25th May 2005 - I was at my then girlfriend's house watching one of the all-time great comebacks. I remember her dad suggesting at half-time that Steven Gerrard had skipped the game to watch Star Wars Episode 3. Must've been an early screening because I'm pretty sure he was back for the second half!

Alexander Isak of Newcastle UnitedImage source, Getty Images

Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa, £8.8m - home to Leicester City

Watkins has one goal in open play in all competitions since 19 October and you can see why Unai Emery decided to give Jhon Duran his chance as Villa's centre-forward.

But, with Duran suspended, this is a major get-right chance for Watkins.

Leicester have conceded 14 goals in their past four away games and Watkins is still piling up strong underlying data.

Against Brighton last time, he had six shots in the box and three big chances yet ended up with just one goal from a penalty.

Alexander Isak (vice captain), Newcastle, £9.2m - away at Spurs

Impossible to leave this man out at the moment, with eight goals in six games.

And he faces a Tottenham defence that always concedes.

They [Arsenal] are attentive to the market, there are ambitions. I'm sure Mikel Arteta would like to do something. He's always been keen on players like Nico Williams at Athletic Bilbao, and they're constantly linked to Alexander Isak, but I think Arsenal are pretty content with what they have at their disposal at the moment.

I was in the middle of my A-Levels at 17. I went grape picking in the south of France in the summer holidays and got a job, when I got back, doing the cloakroom in one of Liverpool's best venues at the time. I was also in a band (as were most of my friends) and living my best life. My team had had another successful season winning Division One and the League Cup, but it was the year that the "quiet man" - the great Bob Paisley - retired. Halcyon times for both me and my team 😊

Southampton are prepared to let striker Ben Brereton Diaz go this month.

The 25-year-old was among a list of names circulated to clubs before the transfer window with the Saints looking to trim their squad.

A number of Championship sides have already enquired about the Chile international. An initial loan is most likely for the forward.

Brereton Diaz joined from Villarreal for £7m in the summer but has failed to score and has managed just four starts in the Premier League this season with Southampton bottom of the table.

A solution needs to be found there, whether it's reintegration or departure. We see reports now of a potential swap deal between Marcus Rashford and Victor Osimhen from Napoli on loan at Galatasaray. These situations are not easy, there is a lot of money involved. Rashford is on a huge contract at Manchester United.

Would it be more feasible to loan him out and pay a portion of it or could they find some permanent taker? Who would be confident enough to pay for him?
