Liverpool v Man Utd (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Mohamed Salah being the best in the world: "I think it's difficult to compare players. If I only look at my own team, Virgil [van Dijk] also has an outstanding season but he doesn't have the numbers because he is a defender. The numbers Mo has speaks for itself. If you simply look at the numbers and the way he's playing, he's definitely a great, great player."

While we don't like to see the 'manager sack race' played out in the media, one wonders what the fallout could be for Ruben Amorim if Manchester United get completely humiliated at Anfield. Losing the match is one thing, but by how many goals? If Liverpool win by multiple goals can he be judged on that?

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim: "Every manager sympathises with every other manager. We all know how much pressure this job brings. It is something we like. Like I said, he's done so well at Sporting and I think he has a good squad of players so he will eventually bring the best out of them."

Liverpool v Man Utd (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

Conor [Bradley] and Ibou [Konate] will train with us today for the first time. They've worked hard to come back for the team. The next step is how they'll handle team sessions."

More from Arne Slot on Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold improving: "He's [Salah] 32 and can still do things better. It's hard to say because he's done such great numbers. I saw Mo walking off against West Ham a bit frustrated after missing chances. Trent can still improve, but these players are top of the world so there isn't much room."

For me, they have much better players than maybe the league table shows at the moment. It might take a while for Ruben Amorim to bring this out of the players but they are much better than the league table shows."

    • Manchester United haven’t won any of their last eight league away games against Liverpool (D4 L4), their longest such run since a run of nine between 1970 and 1979
    • United have scored just one goal in their last eight Premier League away games against Liverpool, failing to score in each of the last five. Only at Everton have they had a longer run without scoring in their league history (six between 1969 and 1974)
    • Following their 3-0 win at Old Trafford in the reverse fixture, Arne Slot could become just the second Liverpool manager to do the league double over Manchester United in his first season with the club, after George Kay in 1936-37
    • Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has both scored more goals (12) and provided more assists (6) against Manchester United than any other player in Premier League history.

I think Chris Sutton's prediction of 5-0 to Liverpool is way off the mark, on the website I've gone for 11-1, making the scoreboard at Anfield look nice and tidy.

Defender Aaron Anselmino, 19, has seen his loan at Boca Juniors end and has officially arrived at Chelsea following his £15.6m move from the Argentine club.

However, despite the excitement around his talents, Chelsea will ease the young centre-back into life in the Premier League.

He will be given time to acclimatise to the level, demands and scrutiny within English football.

That might mean first-team minutes are limited in his initial time in west London.

Anselmino also had a hamstring injury at the end of his spell in Argentina.

We mentioned earlier that these matches have largely been competitive over the years and the results back that up.

While there have been some drubbings in recent seasons, prior to 2021 - only once in the Premier League era had a game been won by a four-goal margin and only twice in that time had one of these sides conceded four goals in the fixture.

Here are the biggest victories of the Premier League era:

    • Man Utd 4-0 Liverpool (April, 2003)
    • Man Utd 1-4 Liverpool (March, 2009)
    • Man Utd 2-4 Liverpool (May, 2021)
    • Man Utd 0-5 Liverpool (October, 2021)
    • Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd (April, 2022)
    • Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd (March, 2023)

NB: The 7-0 win for Liverpool in March 2023 is the biggest margin of victory between the two sides in the history of this fixture.

Neil, Fareham: There is also an argument to say that Arsenal need to win tomorrow or be under huge pressure themselves. It’s certainly an exciting league this year.

So we know who Chris Sutton thinks will win, but what does history suggest when it comes to Liverpool v Manchester United?

Both teams have had their memorable moments in this fixture over the years and while for the most part they have remained competitive - the tide has certainly turned the way of Liverpool in the last decade.

In the last 10 meetings in the Premier League, Liverpool have dominated - scoring 28 goals across them and conceding just six times.

Just once have the Red Devils managed to conquer their fierce rivals in league action since 2018.

    Last 10 Premier League results:

    • Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool
    • Man Utd 2-2 Liverpool
    • Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd
    • Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd
    • Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool
    • Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd
    • Man Utd 0-5 Liverpool

In his programme notes ahead of Monday's game with Newcastle, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim said he was as "convinced as I was on my first day" he would make the club a success.

The problem is, results have not been great.

United have lost six of Amorim's 11 games in charge, including their last four. They have not scored for three matches and confidence is on the floor.

On Sunday they go to Anfield to face Premier League leaders Liverpool. After that they have an FA Cup third-round trip to Arsenal.

If those games look daunting, what about the one that follows - against Southampton at Old Trafford on 16 January.

The one positive for Amorim is that for the first time since he joined United in November, he has had almost a full week to prepare for the trip to Liverpool - and it will be the same next week.

Amorim needs to start finding some answers.

Mike, Liverpool: Oh come on...the term pile the pressure on is a bit strong isn't it? How about...can Arsenal put some pressure on Liverpool? Liverpool have played the season so far with little to no pressure. It will certainly be interesting to see their response when under "a little" pressure.
