One celebrity and worthy wordsmith who is made for football commentary is Sir David Attenborough. For example, if you take the words “natural world” and replace it with “Mo Salah”, you’d get the following speech from David: “It seems to me that Mo Salah is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. He is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.” You can’t argue with that.

  5. ‘They look organised as a club’ – Potter on Forestpublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

A final word from former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter on third-placed Nottingham Forest.

He told the Planet Premier League podcast that they look more “organised as a club” this season.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are currently four points behind second-placed champions Manchester City in the Premier League after beating West Ham 3-0 on Saturday.

Potter told the podcast that Forest have “transitioned from the team that looked a little bit chaotic from the outside in the early stages of their life in the Premier League”.

He said: "They've made really good recruitment decisions in the summer and they're in a fantastic position."

  6. Brighton ‘have their own problems’ - Potterpublished at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

Brighton v Man City (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

Former Brighton manager Graham Potter also told the Planet Premier League podcast that he’s intrigued to see how his old club approach their next Premier League match against Manchester City on Saturday, saying "even though they’ve scored a lot of goals, they've also conceded quite a few".

Potter, 49, led the Seagulls to ninth place during the 2021-22 season - at that point their highest ever top-flight finish.

His former side will host champions City at the Amex Stadium on Saturday. Pep Guardiola's side are missing a number of key players through injury and have lost three matches in a row for the first time since 2018.

However, Potter says Brighton “have got their own problems”, pointing to the fact that they have conceded 17 goals across their last eight fixtures in all competitions.

“It'll be interesting to see how they adapt to City's patient approach,” said the coach.

  7. It’s impossible to have two Odegaards – Potterpublished at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

Inter Milan v Arsenal (20:00 GMT)

Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter believes Arsenal have struggled to fill the hole left by their injured captain Martin Odegaard over the past two months, telling the Planet Premier League podcast that “it's impossible to have two Martin Odegaards”.

The 25-year-old Norwegian midfielder has been out since September, missing 12 games, after damaging his ankle ligaments on international duty.

In his absence, the Gunners have picked up just one point out of a possible nine in their last three Premier League games after losses to Newcastle and Bournemouth and a draw against Liverpool.

Potter told the podcast that he believed the loss of “such an influential player” would “always be a problem” and that fellow Arsenal midfielders Thomas Partey, Declan Rice and Mikel Merino don’t provide “the same creativity”.

The 49-year-old said he believed Arsenal would be hopeful that the relationship between Partey, Rice and Merino would develop over time meaning “the decision-making starts to become quicker and they can make those incisive passes or assists”.

Odegaard has returned to full training ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League match at Inter Milan.

Mikel Arteta updated Arsenal fans on injuries in the squad before they take on Inter Milan this evening.

    • Arteta confirmed that they will assess Martin Odegaard to see if he can play a part tonight, but Declan Rice has picked up a foot injury and won't be available.
    • On captain Odegaard's return: "The positive news [is he is back], Martin, it is great to have him back. He trained with us for the first time today. He felt good, he’s a bit earlier than expected. But it’s great to have him here and we will decide if we use him tomorrow."
    • On Rice's injury: "Declan unfortunately picked up an injury against Newcastle. He was able to finish the game but he wasn’t feeling good the last few days [with his foot]. We’ll have to assess him on Thursday and see if he’s ready for the weekend."

  12. Villa look to continue winning run in Europepublished at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

Club Brugge v Aston Villa (17:45 GMT)

Unai Emery will be without Matty Cash and Ross Barkley for their trip to Belgian champions Club Brugge this evening.

Barkley was missing for Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Spurs, while Cash limped off after an hour in North London.

Villa have the opportunity to move back level on points with Liverpool at the top of the Champions League table and extend their 100% winning run in the competition this season.

"It is a very good opponent, we must try to come back again with our successful way in this competition, being organised, competing like we are competing, being consistent, and getting points," Emery said in his pre-match news conference.

"To beat Brugge here [will be difficult], and the players know, because we had our own experiences in Europe last year, and we can remember our own experiences."

  14. 'Kuhn is showing Celtic what he's got'published at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

    Celtic 3-1 RB Leipzig

    Andrew Petrie
    BBC Sport Scotland

It might seem harsh to call Nicolas Kuhn a surprise package in the Celtic ranks this season given Brendan Rodgers spent £3m to prise the winger from Rapid Vienna in January.

The move created little fanfare or excitement, but 10 months later the 24-year-old has become one of the most important players in the Celtic team and is being linked with a move to the English top flight.

Kuhn scored two goals and played a key role in setting up the third as Celtic beat RB Leipzig 3-1, coming from behind to win a Champions League game for the first time since 2007.

Manager Brendon Rodgers used to repeatedly deliver one message to the German winger last season, according to former Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

"You could see Nicolas second-guessing himself at times last season, but Brendan always believed," Hart said on TNT Sports. "You would hear him at half-time saying to him, 'Nicolas, show us what you've got'.

"He's showing Rodgers now. He looks right at home in these situations and really effective on these Champions League occasions."

Speaking after the Leipzig game, Kuhn suggested that the difference this term has been a full pre-season.

"When I came in, it was a little bit difficult," Kuhn said. "The staff and my team-mates give me the feeling of being important. Now I can show what what I'm able to do."

  15. We sit in a really good place - Rodgerspublished at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

    Celtic 3-1 RB Leipzig

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers said his side "sit in a really good place" after their 3-1 Champions League win over Bundesliga side RB Leipzig last night.

After a demoralising 7-1 defeat at Borussia Dortmund in their second game of the new league phase, Celtic have responded well with a 0-0 draw in Atalanta and yesterday's fine performance which took them to seven points from four games.

"We had the combination of the vibrancy and excitement in attack from the Bratislava game and then the real tactical discipline in our defending from Atalanta," Rodgers said.

"And we really pulled that together to produce an outstanding team performance against a really, really good side. I tip my hat to the players.

"Some of our football second-half was outstanding. Controlling and managing the game really well, our win was really deserved. It gives us real, nice confidence. We've discovered in the last two games we can be really competitive.

"If you told us after the Dortmund game we'd have four points from the next two games, I don't think too many people would have said we would have done that. It's a great next step and gives us great encouragement to go and make the play-off stage, but there is still so much to do."

  17. 'This was a complete performance'published at 14:27 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

    Celtic 3-1 RB Leipzig

    Eilidh Barbour
    Presenter speaking on Football Daily

This was as good a Celtic performance as I have seen in a very, very long time. I think you would have to go back to the days of Martin O'Neil to find a Celtic performance as good as tonight's was in the Champions League.

They had to come from behind, it is the first time they have done that in the Champions League and gone on to win a game for 18 years.

It's back-to-back home wins in this extended league phase. Some of the stats from the game - they had a 91% pass accuracy. That's not just passing it about at the back, they had 17 shots on goal, 12 of them from inside the box and 25 touches in the opposition box.

This was a complete performance. Defensively solid, the goalkeeper had a couple of saves when he needed to. They absolutely dominated a team sitting second in the Bundesliga. What an incredible result.

Celtic's convincing win over RB Leipzig perhaps got overshadowed on a night of huge upsets elsewhere, when the English, Spanish and German champions all fell to humiliating defeats.

But it was one that left BBC Sport's Eilidh Barbour purring...

  20. Liverpool lead the waypublished at 14:21 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

Those results mean that Liverpool stay top of the new Champions League format standings with a maximum 12 points from four games, while Bayer Leverkusen slip down to 11th, with seven points.

Manchester City are also on seven points, but sit in sixth place due to their superior goal difference.

Celtic, meanwhile, moved up to 13th, also on seven points, while Ruben Amorim leaves his Sporting side second in the table on 10 points.

Remember, the top eight after eight games progress directly through to the last 16, while the teams that finish ninth to 24th enter a knockout play-off round and the bottom 12 are eliminated.
