And the outstanding Nicolas Kuhn inspired Celtic as they came from behind against Germany's RB Leipzig to earn an exhilarating third Champions League victory in a row at an exuberant Celtic Park.

Celtic enjoyed a blistering start, but Leipzig – who are second in the Bundesliga but still searching for their first point in the competition – punctured their positivity with Christoph Baumgartner’s neat nod from a corner.

The hosts had lost in 27 of the 28 previous Champions League games in which they had gone behind, but picked themselves up here.

Continuing his exceptional start to the season – 17 goal contributions in 15 games before this – Kuhn cut in from the right and curled an audacious strike in off a post.

The stadium was still bouncing when German winger Kuhn stroked in from just outside the six-yard box after Daizen Maeda’s fresh air swipe allowed Greg Taylor's cut back to reach him just before the break.

Brendan Rodgers’ side maintained their high levels after the interval and were rewarded when the brilliant Reo Hatate lashed in a third and ensured Celtic's second victory of this campaign.

Another hugely significant result happened at Anfield, where Xabi Alonso's emotional return ended in heavy defeat with Luis Diaz scoring a hat-trick as Liverpool maintained their flawless Champions League record by overpowering Bayer Leverkusen.

Luis Diaz broke the deadlock after 61 minutes with a deft lofted finish over keeper Lukas Hradecky from Curtis Jones' pass, Cody Gakpo adding the second two minutes later from Mohamed Salah's cross.

Diaz was on target again with a close-range finish seven minutes from time to give the scoreline an emphatic appearance.

And there was still time for the Colombian to smash home a rebound to take home the match ball after substitute Darwin Nunez had his effort blocked, completing his first hat-trick for Liverpool.

In case you missed it, incoming Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim saved one of his greatest Sporting victories for his last home game to condemn Manchester City to a third successive defeat for the first time since April 2018.

It was City’s heaviest defeat since September 2020 and only the second time in his trophy-ladened spell at City that Pep Guardiola has been beaten in three consecutive games in a single season.

To cap a thoroughly depressing night for City, star striker Erling Haaland blasted a second-half penalty against the crossbar.

Sporting's own Scandanavian superstar Viktor Gyokeres - formerly of Coventry City - did much of the damage with a superb hat-trick.

The Swede drove home a 38th-minute leveller to Phil Foden’s early opener and then kept his cool after the break to beat Ederson twice from the spot.

My view is this 'crisis' is exactly what Man City needed. The question at the start of the season was whether they would find the thrill to go again having won 4 in a row and a recent Champions League. But this situation gives them a cause to battle for where arguably they haven't been before. To win the league and Champions League from such a position of adversity and injuries will give them incentive to fight for.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana on Ruben Amorim's arrival:

"I did watch the game yesterday [Sporting's win over Manchester City]. Great victory for them.

"It is a different system but my team-mates here are all pragmatic. Everyone here is capable to play in each system, so I don' think this will be any issue for us. We have big players and they will step up."

  8. 'Players gave everything for Ten Hag'published at 14:04 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

Man Utd v PAOK (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester United

"When I heard he was leaving obviously I felt bad," said Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana on Erik ten Hag's dismissal. "It's not always easy for players to understand when a manager is leaving, but at the end of the day the club have to make a decision and we have to follow.

"He is a very good manager, I have a good relationship with him. Why things didn't work here is we didn't win enough games. It's simple. At a high level it's not easy, sometimes you have to pay the price. Unfortunately it was him. The players gave everything, we tried our best but it just didn't work."

  9. Onana also questioned by mediapublished at 14:00 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

    Manchester United

Ruud Van Nistelrooy was joined for the news conference by goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Although the United interim boss fielded the majority of the questions, a couple were aimed at Onana who spoke solemnly about the exit of Erik ten Hag, who he had previously worked under at Ajax.

Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy on advice to striker Rasmus Hojlund: "Stay calm and believe in himself like I do and his team-mates do. He knows he is young and promising. It is daily work that he knows will pay off. I am confident in that."

How to get the best from him?: "The most goals are scored in the penalty area, so that is where we want to get our players most of the time. It depends on the games.

"You have to deal with the circumstances. When it is needed for him to hold up play and get players into third-man positions and play on from there, he does brilliant work. Of course, he is a guy who can change a game in a moment, like the penalty [against Chelsea]. That threat we always have."

  11. 'I feel settled'published at 13:54 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

Chelsea v Noah (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Benoit Badiashile on if it has been hard to settle as he has played under four different managers in two years: "To be honest it is something I am used to, at Monaco I had six or seven managers. You try and do your best with them.

"Yeah [I feel settled]. I like the club, everyone in the club are great people."

And on Joao Felix: "Joao is a top player, he is a smart player and a good person."

Ruud van Nistelrooy on whether there has been a change of atmosphere since the departure of Erik ten Hag:

"I don't know, it's difficult. Of course it is mixed emotions because when he leaves it is a very sad day and the days after that you have to recover as a team and as staff.

"To go through that together, we tried everything together to make it work but we couldn't. Then you have to switch mindset. We did and you saw that against Leicester. They [the players] took responsibility that they had to improve as well.

"I think the emotion has calmed down. Players are now training and focusing on getting their performances where we want them."

  13. 'You have to stay professional every game'published at 13:48 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

Chelsea v Noah (Thurs, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Benoit Badiashile on whether he knew anything about opponents Noah before being drawn against them: "To be honest, I don't know the team, but we will work on them with the gaffer."

And on if it is difficult to come up against a team you don't know: "You have to stay professional every game because we don't know how the match will be. We have to 100% focused on the game and try and win the game like always."

And on not starting in the Premier League: "Of course when you are a footballer you want to play every game. But in a club like Chelsea you have a lot of good players so you have to try and do your best."

  14. 'We have a lot of potential'published at 13:45 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

Man Utd v PAOK (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester United

Manchester United interim boss Ruud Van Nistelrooy on changes at the club:

"Things have changed quickly and massively so to manage that was a big task. Now things have sort of calmed down and we are focused on the two performances we can build on. Tomorrow we must play with the same passion and commitment."

On scoring goals: "I am not worried because we are creating the chances. With the talent we have, and they're still young, we have a lot of potential. The key thing with scoring goals is confidence and these guys will have it."

  15. 'I want to stay at Chelseapublished at 13:41 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

Chelsea v Noah (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile also faced the media and was asked about Thursday's fixture: "It's a great opportunity, we want to win this competition [Conference League]. We know how important tomorrow is."

And on life under Enzo Maresca: "He is a great person and a great coach. We have the same vision of football. I really enjoy the time with the gaffer."

And on if he wants to stay at Chelsea: "Of course I want to stay at Chelsea. I know how difficult it is to [succeed] here but I will try my best to do it."

    Manchester United

More from Ruud van Nistelrooy on whether his long-term successor Ruben Amorim will find success with the current squad:

"I'm so focused on the present, to comment on that is very difficult. I'm putting all my energy into the current squad.

"To relate it to his playing style is a question I can't answer because I am so focused on getting results going. It is a vital two games for the season. I think I am doing the new manager the best favour by doing that. "

Manchester United interim boss Ruud Van Nistelrooy on injuries in the squad:

"Tyrell [Malacia] is the furthest at the moment. He's been back in team training for a few weeks now, no restrictions. It is good for him to plan game minutes, maybe in the under-21s.

"Harry [Maguire] is still inside working on his rehab and Luke [Shaw] is doing pitch work like he did today. He's progressing there to doing partial team training soon."

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on how he would react if full-back Reece James, who is returning from a long-term injury, was named in the England squad tomorrow: "No idea to be honest. We are happy in the way he is progressing with us in terms of physical condition and also the way he is playing with us. We are happy with that.

"I love my players joining the international team. It means it is good for the club, player, the manager. I don't know if he is going to be with the international team."

On Joao Felix's lack of minutes: "I feel [it is a] shame about Joao and I would like to give him more minutes in the Premier League, but I have said many times we need defensive balance and we cannot play with Joao, Cole [Palmer], Chris [Nkunku].

"I'd like to put them all on the pitch, but then you have to defend and you need a good balance between attacking and defending and this is the only reason why.

"I do not have doubt that if Joao keeps working well he is going to find his moment in the Premier League."

  19. 'I am waiting for conversations to take place'published at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

Man Utd v PAOK (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy on whether he has spoken to incoming manager Ruben Amorim:

"No, I haven't spoken with him. No contact so far, so no changes in that. I don't know when either."

On his own future: "It's difficult to comment on that now, I am waiting for conversations to take place. In the meantime the most important thing is getting the work done on a daily basis and in the game tomorrow in Europe. I have to say that I feel the responsibility to do well over the next week and that is my job. I am focused on that.

"I welcome Ruben, I am happy to help him and that is the situation at the moment. "

Chelsea v Noah (Thurs, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was also asked if he had heard of opponents Noah before the Blues drew them in the Europa Conference League: "I heard before the game, in the last two or three days we have watched different games from them. I said many times that the Conference is a bit of a tricky competition for us because everyone against us they want to do [well]. We have to be ready technically, but also mentally."

On what he expects from Noah: "They play a different shape so we don't know how they are going to come here and play, we try to be ready."
