Finally, we finish our mini round-up at the Bernabeau, where defending champions Real Madrid suffered a shock home defeat to AC Milan.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti says his side "have to be worried" after fallingto back-to-back losses on home turf and have now lost two of their first four games in the Champions League.

Vinicius Junior’s penalty equalised for Madrid after Malick Thiaw’s opener, but strikes from Alvaro Morata and Tijjani Reijnders secured a deserved victory for Milan.

Madrid went into the game on the back of a 4-0 defeat by rivals Barcelona, who they now trail by nine points in La Liga.

And Ancelotti’s reigning European champions have only six points from four games in the Champions League, following their defeat at Lille in October.

  3. Liverpool lead the waypublished at 07:26 Greenwich Mean Time

Liverpool's win means they stay top of the new Champions League format standings with a maximum 12 points from four games, while Bayer Leverkusen slip down to 11th, with seven points.

Manchester City are also on seven points, but sit in sixth place due to their superior goal difference.

Celtic, meanwhile, moved up to 13th, also on seven points, while Ruben Amorim leaves his Sporting side second in the table on 10 points.

Remember, the top eight after eight games progress directly through to the last 16, while the teams that finish ninth to 24th enter a knockout play-off round and the bottom 12 are eliminated.

The outstanding Nicolas Kuhn inspired Celtic as they came from behind against Germany's RB Leipzig to earn an exhilarating third Champions League victory in a row at an exuberant Celtic Park.

Celtic enjoyed a blistering start, but Leipzig – who second in the Bundesliga but still searching for their first point in the competition – punctured their positivity with Christoph Baumgartner’s neat nod from a corner.

The hosts had lost in 27 of the 28 previous Champions League games in which they had gone behind, but picked themselves up here.

Continuing his exceptional start to the season – 17 goal contributions in 15 games before this – Kuhn cut in from the right and curled an audacious strike in off a post.

The stadium was still bouncing when German winger Kuhn stroked in from just outside the six-yard box after Daizen Maeda’s fresh air swipe allowed Greg Taylor's cut back to reach him just before the break.

Brendan Rodgers’ side maintained their high levels after the interval and were rewarded when the brilliant Reo Hatate lashed in a third and ensured Celtic's second victory of this campaign.

Xabi Alonso's emotional return to Anfield ended in heavy defeat with Luis Diaz scoring a hat-trick as Liverpool maintained their flawless Champions League record by overpowering Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso remains a hugely popular figure at Liverpool after winning the Champions League in 2005 and was heavily touted to succeed Jurgen Klopp this summer until he decided to stay in Germany.

Arne Slot was eventually appointed and his outstanding start continued as Liverpool once again recovered from a sluggish first half to overwhelm Leverkusen, who had controlled them comfortably before the break.

Luis Diaz broke the deadlock after 61 minutes with a deft lofted finish over keeper Lukas Hradecky from Curtis Jones' pass, Cody Gakpo adding the second two minutes later from Mohamed Salah's cross.

Diaz was on target again with a close-range finish seven minutes from time to give the scoreline an emphatic appearance.

And there was still time for the Colombian to smash home a rebound to take home the match ball after substitute Darwin Nunez had his effort blocked, completing his first hat-trick for Liverpool.

Incoming Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim saved one of his greatest Sporting victories for his last home game to condemn Manchester City to a third successive defeat for the first time since April 2018.

It was City’s heaviest defeat since September 2020 and only the second time in his trophy-ladened spell at City that Pep Guardiola has been beaten in three consecutive games in a single season.

To cap a thoroughly depressing night for City, star striker Erling Haaland blasted a second-half penalty against the crossbar.

Sporting's own Scandanavian superstar Viktor Gyokeres - formerly of Coventry City - did much of the damage with a superb hat-trick.

The Swede drove home a 38th-minute leveller to Phil Foden’s early opener and then kept his cool after the break to beat Ederson twice from the spot.

  8. A night of shocks...published at 07:00 Greenwich Mean Time

Well, that was quite a night of Champions League football.

Questions were asked when Uefa introduced the new extended league format as to whether it will all be too predictable.

It was anything but on Tuesday, when the league champions of England, Spain and Germany were all humbled.

Liverpool produced a stunning display, powered by Luis Diaz's second-half hat-trick, to send home Xabi Alonso and his Bayer Leverkusen side with some soul searching to do.

And Manchester United's head coach in waiting, Ruben Amorim, led his current side Sporting to an equally impressive victory at home to soon-to-be rival Pep Guardiola's injury-hit Manchester City side.

Defending champions Real Madrid were also well beaten at home by AC Milan.

And what a result for Celtic, who put themselves well in the mix to progress to the knockout stages with a thrilling win at home to RB Leipzig, who are currently second in the Bundesliga.
