West Ham are really struggling to get a foothold in this game.

This has been a bright start from Manchester United and Elisabeth Terland in particular.

She probably should have won a penalty after she was pushed over by Camila Saez in the box and was unlucky not to score when she had a header cleared off the line.

Immediate signs that the former Brighton striker is a good signing.

Manchester United are piling on the pressure!

Leah Galton darts down the left and whips in a cross to trouble goalkeeper Kinga Szemik, who just about tips it onto her crossbar.

The danger is still there, though. The ball trickles off the crossbar and falls to Elisabeth Terland, who can't find a way through a wall of West Ham defenders.

It’s an exciting afternoon in Crawley as Brighton open their WSL campaign with strong ambitions.

They have recruited heavily in the transfer window, investing in high-profile talent and attracting players like England duo Fran Kirby and Nikita Parris.

Kirby’s debut today will be what most home fans are excited to see here. She is one of the key figures they are looking to build this new-look team around as they try to climb up the table.

Speaking with people at the club here today, I get a sense there is still some rebuilding to do and they know there is competition from rivals in the table.

An improvement on last season’s ninth place finish would be considered a success. But they also hope to attract news fans. It’s still fairly quiet at Broadfield Stadium but they hope that will change.

    Emma Sanders
BBC Sport women’s football news reporter

Manchester United defender Maya Le Tissier spoke to us this week about recently being named captain.

"I jumped straight in and said ‘yeah, definitely!’ I was buzzing. I didn’t really see it coming," said Le Tissier.

"Katie Zelem did such a great job and then it came quite quickly. [Marc Skinner] told me to go away and have a think about it. Obviously I said yes and it’s been great so far."

She captains the team for the first time this afternoon, leading United out at Old Trafford to open their new WSL season.

"It’s a big responsibility for how big this club is. It’s a really special feeling that not many people get to experience," added Le Tissier.

"This is my third season here so people know what I’m about now. I will just continue with that.

"I wouldn’t have taken up the captaincy if I didn’t think I was ready. It’s a big responsibility but I’ll do my very best to do a good job."

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner said he "feels alive again" heading into the new Women's Super League campaign.

With the highs of winning the Women's FA Cup and the disappointment of a fifth-placed WSL finish last season, Skinner admitted he was "psychologically spent".

But he is filled with enthusiasm for the new campaign, which begins against West Ham at Old Trafford on Saturday.

"I can absolutely assure you I have more energy now than I have ever had," he said. "I am absolutely raring to go and I am driven. I feel alive again.

"I feel really energetic and I want that to transmit onto the team. I am getting my energy back. Let’s see what we can achieve this season."

  13. Improved season for the Irons?published at 11:55 British Summer Time 21 September

Man Utd v West Ham (12:00 BST)

    Adam Millington
BBC Sport journalist at Old Trafford

West Ham had a tough season in the WSL last year, finishing second bottom - albeit nine points clear of the drop.

They've made some big signings in the summer, although have lost the likes of Risa Shimizu and Mackenzie Arnold.

Three of their new players - Kinga Szemik, Camila Saez and Li Mengwen all start today. Manuela Pavi and Seraine Piebul are also on the bench.

A win today would be unexpected, but a big statement. Rehanne Skinner will be wanting improvement this year and it's a chance to signal their intent.

West Ham boss Rehanne Skinner says there is "more pressure" on her side heading into the new Women's Super League season.

The Hammers won just three games last season and finished 11th.

"We have to go into this season with no excuses and we’ve got to want to fight for everything, we need to be more consistent with what we deliver," Skinner said.

"There is a bit more pressure around us doing well because we want to improve on last year.

"But we also want to accept, off the back of last year, everybody will be writing us off as the underdogs and that’s going on already."

Brighton's new boss Dario Vidosic is not thinking about where the club may finish in the Women's Super League this season.

"It's not one I look at. We haven't even had the first kick of a ball of the season to look at the outcome of the end of the season. We respect everyone," he said.

The Seagulls finished ninth last time out, but their new boss has challenged them to aim high as the new campaign begins.

"Brighton beat Manchester City last season. Everyone is beatable, you have to turn up, you have to be your best, you have to play the football and if you don’t you'll have a very hard afternoon, so we focus on ourselves," Vidosic added.
