  2. Do table toppers usually win the title?published at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    FT: Tottenham 3-6 Liverpool

Liverpool will be top at Christmas.

Exactly half the time - in 16 seasons out of 32 - the team top of the table on Christmas Day go on to win the title.

Liverpool's record though is much, much worse than that.

This is the seventh time the Reds have topped the table on 25 December - but their only success since the 1992 rebrand was in 2019-20.

Arsenal led the table over Christmas for a fourth time last season - and like the previous three times failed to lift the trophy.

By contract Chelsea and Manchester City - plus one-time winners Blackburn and Leicester - have always won the title when they have led the way at this stage.

On four occasions a team have been outside the top four at Christmas and won the title - including last season.

Manchester City were fifth at this stage - six points behind Arsenal albeit with a game in hand - and ended up as champions.

The others were Manchester United (fifth in 1996-97), Arsenal (sixth in 1997-98) and City (eighth in 2020-21).

On Trent Alexander-Arnold possibly leaving Liverpool...

It is more than a football decision whether it is money, trophies or your career – it is about his legacy at Liverpool and how he's seen.

Does he want to be seen how Steven Gerrard is seen? Or Steve McManaman?

    I feel for Steve.

He went to Real Madrid and won a couple of European Cups, but he is not adored by Liverpool fans.

Virgil van Dijk never looks flustered, he’s in magnificent form and he never has to get out of second gear.

When Mo Salah is not on the pitch he gets angry.

The contract talk doesn’t seem to affect how they play.

  6. 'If it was easy to win the league then every team would do it'published at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    FT: Tottenham 3-6 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot to Sky Sports: "The first 50-55 minutes is what you want, apart from the goal we conceded. 3-1 up and then it ended up being 5-1. We thought it was enough but Tottenham have far too much quality and they're able to create and score.

"In the games they've lost here against the bigger teams, they've been in the game. It was a really good performance from us apart from the 20 minutes we decided not to run anymore. That 15 minutes is maybe useful for us. It didn't hurt us today but in other moments, it's good.

"Against every team, there's an opportunity. If they go for man for man which they did for the first goal, then it needs one player to outplay the other and then you have an extra man. They have a very good idea about football. If you give them too much space then they will hurt you. I like what Ange does. He is at a club where they don't win that much in the last 15 to 20 years.

"They should be one of the best players in the world otherwise you don't play for Liverpool. Mo [Salah] got two goals and two assists. He played a very good game. With Trent, the focus might be on the great cross for the first goal but playing against Son is not easy but he did very well.

On Alexander-Arnold: "He has increased a bit but he can still do better. Fulham was ok, but for his standards, not top.

On being top of the league: "It tells you we are a very good team. Still three games to go until halfway but if you go here and play the game we did then it shows we are a hard team to beat. If it was easy to win the league then every team would do it."

  7. 'It was a bridge too far'published at 19:14 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    FT: Tottenham 3-6 Liverpool

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou speaking to Sky Sports: "Painful one for us, credit to Liverpool, they were too strong for us today and we were running on empty in terms of our energy levels which is quite understandable with the situation we're in.

"They're a good side and in a good moment. We racked up from Thursday night with the same team so that tells you a fair bit. It played a part but it doesn't take away they're a very good football team. It was a bridge too far.

"The lads tried as hard as they could but they met an opponent that was a little bit too sharp. I don't like losing. I said during the week we want to be an attacking team but we want to win.

"Not many sides have scored three against them. They're flying, really settled. Just look at the players they're bringing on, we're not at that level yet. I think I've explained clearly what happened today."

Tottenham’s Premier League matches under Ange Postecoglou have seen an average of 3.6 goals scored per game (both teams combined).

Among those to take charge of 50+ games in the competition, this is the highest goals per game rate for any manager.

  10. 'Conceding six goals is really painful'published at 19:07 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    FT: Tottenham 3-6 Liverpool

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min to Sky Sports: "Very disappointed with the result and conceding six goals is really painful. What can I say? As a footballer, you always want to play. At the moment we have to work hard. I don't want to make any excuses. We tried to be as sharp as possible.

"There's no question, they are top of the league. You can see quality players with top discipline. There's a reason they are top. If you give them a mistake, they punish you.

"Football is always risky even if you sit back, you concede so many goals. We have to stick together in difficult times and also good times. Today is painful. We have to move together and bounce back stronger."

They have different options which makes them hard to stop.

Given the shambles Man United are, Spurs just about winning that Carabao Cup match does camouflage that they are a better team and can compete against top opposition. Look at table, in the bottom half, one point separating the two getting hammered by in form teams. That is evidence of the struggle these two teams are up against. Mediocre.

  14. 'Fifteen minutes not good enough'published at 19:03 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    FT: Tottenham 3-6 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot to BBC Sport: "For 60 minutes we did everything we had to do, we were comfortable and good with the ball. The main thing is we worked very, very hard. But then the same players with the same quality thought that 10 or 15 minutes of not working as hard was good enough.

“Tottenam have enough quality to score goals if you give them chances. You have to be on top of your game for the whole game and we didn’t do that.”

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister to BBC Sport: "We spoke about it in the dressing room, we are not happy with the fact we conceded three goals, that's very cear, but we score six, that’s not very easy.

"Tottenham are a good team, they press really high, they are aggressive, we knew we had to put the ball in behind and score the opportunities we had. We are happy with the result, there are many things to improve but we’re happy to get the three points."

On the performance of team-mate Dominik Szoboszlai: "Dom is amazing, he can do everything, on and off the ball he is really good. He played a really good game, same with the attackers. We’re in a really good moment."

On conceding more goals recently: “At the back we have to play simple and get the ball to them [attackers]. We worked on this the whole week and we try to improve every single day.

“We know we have to concede less, we are not happy with conceding three today, but it is what it is, we play against really good teams. Maybe we have to defend better but also we know we are dangerous when we attack.”

Dragusin made mistakes, it's his first season and it's a makeshift defence against an awesome front line. Ange can't control mistakes and can't make personnel changes either as he has zero players. The way he wants to play isn't the issue. The issue is his players only execute his gameplan properly half the time. As better players come in and injuries improve the performance will improve. Ange isn't a magician.

Why should Ange adapt to a squad of mostly weak-minded players? All that achieves is it gives us an illusion of progress and it’s a carrot and stick approach. We need rebuild, a change in the culture, and a medical team who can monitor players properly. Ange in.

That press conference on Friday from Arne Slot was hilarious.

People thought he was defending Ange - I don't believe that for one minute.

Slot was desperate for Tottenham to play the same way as they played Man Utd and they did.

Liverpool could have scored 10. Everyone I spoke to, Liverpool supporters said it was obvious.

  20. 'I'm not going to point it out'published at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    FT: Tottenham 3-6 Liverpool

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou speaking to BBC Sport: "It’s obviously a painful one for us. Credit to Liverpool, they were too good for us. They're in a great moment, great form, feeling confident. It was a bridge too far for us, We looked like we lacked energy which is understandable."

When asked if any factors apart from injuries are behind defensive struggles: "I'm just going to stop answering these questions. If people can't see the obvious I‘m not going to point it out. Make of it what you want, yes we're conceding goals.

"If you want to discount the fact we’re missing a goalkeeper, two centre-backs and left-back and that hasn't coincided with what we're doing… I don’t know what to say anymore. I think people make up their mind in their own way. They either think what I’m doing is good or bad, and that’s fine.

"It’s fairly significant, if you took out Liverpool’s goalkeeper, two centre-backs and a left-back - or any team other than Liverpool, they'd find it tough going as well."
