Getting rid of Arteta is ridiculous. He's done a great job and just needs a summer swapping dead wood for a striker.

    J in Cardiff

I don't think many Arsenal fans would truly want Arteta gone. He's actually doing a pretty good job there - so many teams fumble after an institutional manager leaves but he's carried on pretty well after Arsene. Agreed his recruitment team have left some huge holes - primarily not picking up a world-class striker. The people wanting him gone are fans from other clubs who don't like his team's tactics.

Jif, Manchester: The penalty awarded to Arsenal showed what life would be like without VAR as I believe that would have been overturned if the referee had been asked to take another look. Whilst VAR is incredibly frustrating in its current format, it does have a place when decisions like that are made. The contact was just not sufficient enough for Havertz to fall down like that. So, in summary, I'm back on the fence with it!

Who should Arsenal sign in January?

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards sets out in stark detail what this Arsenal team is missing and why they urgently need to sign a striker:

"If they would have had a striker who knows where the net is, who knows the movements [things would have been different against Manchester United].

"He doesn't even have to play well.

"How many times have we talked about [Erling] Haaland where he's not even been in the game but he gets a chance and he scores.

"That is the difference [for Arsenal] at this moment in time."

Harry Maguire was phenomenal yesterday. After a tricky couple of seasons, it's great to see him rediscover the form he showed in his first season at Man Utd. Surely an England call-up beckons.

To make matters worse for Arsenal, striker Gabriel Jesus was forced off on a stretcher in the first half at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Speaking about Jesus' knee injury at full-time, Arteta said that it was a big worry for the Gunners, with Bukayo Saka also currently sidelined.

"It's a big worry, that's my feeling." Arteta said.

"He had to come off on a stretcher with a lot of pain, touching his knee. It's not looking good.

"The worrying factor is the feeling that he had. When he had to come off and the pain that he was in."

Maybe I play Football Manager too much? Keep saying it, Arsenal need a proper old-fashioned centre-forward! We also need to find replacements for Partey and Jorginho? We need to start mixing up the style of play because teams are starting to work us out!

Kai Havertz was at the forefront of Arsenal's attack during their FA Cup third-round defeat to Manchester United.

He had an expected goals total of 0.8 in the match, second only to Martin Odegaard, who missed a penalty during the FA Cup defeat.

United, who won the game, had a team total of just 0.27 xG for the match and Havertz also missed a penalty during the shootout.

Bayindir shines as 10-man Man United beat Arsenal in dramatic thriller

For anyone not familiar with the key incidents in Arsenal's defeat at home to Manchester United, have a watch of the highlights above, but here is how the FA Cup third-round tie panned out:

    • Joshua Zirkzee scored the winning penalty as a 10-man Manchester United beat Arsenal in a thrilling encounter to reach the fourth round
    • United had to play with 10 men for nearly an hour after Diogo Dalot was shown a second yellow card, having mistimed a tackle on Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino
    • Manchester United took the lead through an excellent Bruno Fernandes goal in the 52nd minute, after Alejandro Garnacho took advantage of a Gabriel slip and crossed for Fernandes to curl the ball into the top corner
    • Dalot was sent off in the 61st minute after his clumsy tackle and Arsenal were level just two minutes later when centre-back Gabriel volleyed in from inside the area
    • The Gunners then had a massive chance to take the lead when Kai Havertz was adjudged to have been brought down by Harry Maguire in the box and referee Andrew Madley awarded a penalty
    • There was a delay in the spot-kick being taken after a melee in the box in which Maguire, Havertz and Gabriel were all booked
    • Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard stepped up to take the penalty but Altay Bayindir dived to his left to push away the ball and keep the scores level
    • Mikel Arteta's side had big chances through Declan Rice and Havertz again to win the game but could not beat the impressive Bayindir
    • United were made to defend throughout extra time as Arsenal looked for ways to take the lead with their numerical advantage
    • But Arteta's side could not find a way through and Havertz had his penalty saved by Bayindir before Zirkzee sent David Raya the wrong way to win the shootout.

Kai Havertz clearly and obviously dived to win a penalty. No ifs or buts. It was one of the most obvious acts of cheating you will ever see on a football pitch and one that could (and usually would) have changed the outcome of the game. Havertz's punishment? Absolutely nothing. That is a real problem that needs addressing, but there is no desire to do anything about it. So frustrating for those who love the game. Sort it out.

Arsenal have lost five of their last six FA Cup ties, while the Gunners have been eliminated from the competition in the third round in back-to-back campaigns for the first time since 1995/1996 (v Millwall and Sheffield United).

Since winning the FA Cup in 2020, Arsenal have only won twice in the competition in the last five seasons, beating Newcastle and Oxford.

As for Arsenal potentially being out of both domestic cups inside five days - their season is imploding unless Arteta forgets his dogmatic approach and buys a striker. Arsenal have lacked ruthlessness in front of goal for years - even under Wenger. They are obsessed with scoring the perfect goal, covering this up with set pieces.

  16. Losing captain Walker would be 'massive' - Akepublished at 08:30 Greenwich Mean Time

Nathan Ake and Kyle WalkerImage source, Getty Images

Manchester City's Nathan Ake says losing captain Kyle Walker would affect the team "massively".

City boss Pep Guardiola said the 34-year-old England international has asked to leave the club following Saturday's 8-0 FA Cup third round win over Salford City and he has been linked with both Milan clubs in today's gossip column.

Walker still has 18 months left on his contract but when asked if the full-back would be granted his wish if he said he wanted to leave, Guardiola said: "Of course".

"He's massive for us, been massive for us over the years," fellow defender Ake said on the news. "He is a big character in the squad. He deserves a lot of praise for all the years he's been a top player for this club. 100% [a club legend]."

City have agreed a £33.6m deal with French club Lens for Uzbekistan international defender Abdukodir Khusanov and are in negotiations with Brazilian side Palmeiras for teenage defender Vitor Reis. City are also interested in Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush.

"Any incomings, the club know what they're doing," said Ake. "They're trying to help the team and trying to get us back to where we belong."

Italian giants AC Milan are emerging as a potential destination for Manchester City star Kyle Walker but there are still a few issues to resolve.

City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed on Saturday that Walker had asked if he could "explore his options" to leave the club and move abroad.

City are adamant no concrete offer has been put to them yet, but sources close to the player feel AC Milan, currently eighth in Serie A, is a viable option.

However, AC Milan are currently looking at a loan deal while Walker, who still has 18 months remaining on his City contract, wants a permanent move.

There has been reported interest in the Saudi Pro-League but Walker prefers to stay in Europe.

“If he wants to explore, now it is a question of the market,” said Guardiola. “He has to decide, not me.

“Kyle is an incredible player, with an incredible physicality. He is a top-class player. When he has focus he is unstoppable as a right-back. I never see a player with this physical condition in my career. He is fit. He can play one, two, three, four years as a professional.”

Guardiola has also said he doesn’t want to pick players whose mind is elsewhere, so presumably the 34-year-old will not be in contention for City’s Premier League trip to Brentford on Tuesday.

The City boss is due to speak to the media ahead of that game at 12:30 GMT today.

'The heart has gone out of this team' - Peston on Arsenalpublished at 08:17 Greenwich Mean Time

Robert Peston on X, external: For Arsenal to lose two cup games at home, in such quick succession, is devastating. The heart has gone out of this team. The absence of Saka is not any kind of sufficient explanation or justification. I am a great believer that managers need to be given time and consistent support. But I cannot see any kind of strategy from Arteta and his colleagues that would transform us into trophy winners from our current status as honourable runners-up.
