Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on reports there is an agreement in place for Renato Veiga to join Borussia Dortmund: "I'm not aware there is an agreement for Renato. He was here with us yesterday working, he will be here today. At the moment he is with us as a player, so we will see what happens."

On if he has spoken to Veiga: "Yes, I had chat with Renato, I say to him the exact same thing that I say to you. Playing in the position with us, that give him chance to join national team and give him the chance to get the speculation around him so clubs are looking for him and clubs are looking for players that are doing well.

"If there is a player that only wants to play one position, they have to adapt. They have to learn to play different position."

When it was suggested Veiga would like more minutes, Maresca responded: "I have said many times - I also want the long hair...but we are more than 20-25 players, they all want to play, but it is not possible."

In hindsight, should the £100m for Declan Rice have been spent on a striker instead? Is a top-class DM more needed than a top-class goalscorer?

  3. 'FA Cup not quite what it was for not having replays'published at 11:18 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Jez, Cheltenham: Hi Phil. What’s your view on FA Cup replays? Personally, I like the current set-up where results are known on the day. Might be unfair on the lower division sides but at least fans and clubs know where they stand and it reduces fixture congestion.

Morning, Jez. Other opinions (yours in fact) are available, but my own is that I wish we still had FA Cup replays. It is a potential money-spinner for clubs down the pyramid that desperately need the financial boost – and imagine Tamworth going to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

I think the FA Cup is not quite what it was for not having replays.

  4. 'I feel shame' about Chilwellpublished at 11:15 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

Chelsea v Bournemouth (Tue, 19:30 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on latest around Carney Chukwuemeka and Ben Chilwell: "We don’t need a player to go out. Simply because they are players who want to play more, there is a chance for them to leave."

On what Chilwell is like around the training ground: "He has been top. Very professional. He works hard. I feel shame because of the situation but, in terms of behaviour, he has been very good."

On what happened for Chilwell not to play: "First of all because it is my choice. Reason why I said probably because I can see Malo Gusto, Reece James or Marc Cucrella doing different kind of job during the game.

"I think Chilwell is a top full-back, doing that job up and down and given opportunity in past to win titles and be in national team, but I struggle to see Ben doing different kind of things."

Arteta-Excel-Sheet-Football just isn't doing it for me now. This data-driven style of football is horrible to watch, and the fluency has gone from previous seasons. Arteta will never let them play football, take the handbrake off, or buy a striker.

  6. 'I would be very happy for there to be retrospective punishment'published at 11:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Mike: Hi Phil, after the penalty was awarded for Arsenal, Kai Havertz fell to the ground amidst the chaos. Replays showed it was just a slight head-to-head contact with Manuel Ugarte. This kind of simulation is on the rise this year. Do you think there should be retrospective punishment?

Hello, Mike. I’ve had this question on various incidents recently and I would be very happy for there to be retrospective punishment for anyone guilty of diving or simulation of any sort. It may not remove it completely, but it would certainly make players hesitate about doing it.

  7. 'I'm not a fan of full-backs going up and down'published at 10:59 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

Chelsea v Bournemouth (Tue, 19:30 GMT)

    Chelsea

We promised you some Enzo Maresca - the Chelsea boss began his news conference with some team news: "Yes they [Reece James and Romeo Lavia] are available [for 90 minutes]. I said since we start we are going to manage both because they are a bit [of a] delicate situation.

"[Noni Madueke] is back, he is training with us and 100% fit."

On managing James as a full-back: "For sure, using a full-back in that way - up and down - you spend more energy. But I'm not a fan of full-back [going] up and down, our full-backs we don't use them up and down.

"Only game we do that was Crystal Palace, where we don’t use full back inverted for a reason, but I'm not a fan of full-back up and down."

The Arsenal v Man United game yesterday was a great watch for the neutral (penalties added to the excitement, but would rather we still had replays in the FA Cup). It was abundantly clear that Arsenal need a proper striker. Isak or Gyokeres may be longer-term targets for the Gunners, but what about a cheeky January deal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin? Cheap, as he's out of contract in the summer and would score goals if he had the service (sorry Everton fans).

  9. VAR 'too invasive now'published at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Steve, Kent: Phil, do you think not having VAR at the weekend was a good thing?

Morning Steve. Mixed feelings, but what I really enjoyed was not having to wait forever for decisions to be made. Andy Madley could have done with it at Arsenal yesterday, especially as he tried to deal with the chaos after the penalty award.

My view on VAR has changed. I welcomed it initially, but have become disenchanted with it because of the lack of communication to fans and also, in my opinion, it is too invasive now, almost looking for ways to disallow goals. "Clear and obvious" went a very long time ago.

I would be happy with line technology and semi-automated offside, but I accept I may be in the minority there.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has also been speaking this morning before Tuesday's visit of Manchester City in the Premier League.

On team news, Frank said that centre-back Ben Mee was available following a return from a muscle injury. However, Kristoffer Ajer and Ethan Pinnock remain sidelined.

Midfielders Christian Norgaard and Vitaly Janelt are back after missing Saturday's shock FA Cup defeat to Plymouth Argyle, while Rico Henry is also likely to feature, but not from the start.

  12. 'Nice to have Jota available'published at 10:34 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

    Liverpool

A final word from Arne Slot's news conference on Diogo Jota's availability after the Portugal forward started Saturday's FA Cup win at home to Accrington Stanley: "You saw the way we built up his minutes. Now he's ready to play 90. It's nice to have him available, so hopefully it stays like this. He's a hard-worker. He tries to become a better player every single day.

"He's a player who is good in both parts. He's a threat when attacking and he works really hard. Jota is an experienced player, which is one reason why he wore the armband. I think he served the club the longest from the players on the pitch. Let's hope he stays fit."

  13. Endo 'gives everything he has'published at 10:29 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

Nottm Forest v Liverpool (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

On Wataru Endo, who has been playing out of position: "I asked Harvey to come into the room before that game [against Tottenham] and he wants to play in that number 10 position. But because of injures I had to play him on the right.

"I didn't even invite Endo in [to the office] because I know he is a 'wherever you play me I’ll do my best' player. That might be normal for a lot of fans to hear but as someone has been around for a while it’s not.

"I know wherever he plays, he gives everything he has. He is a very important player in our team."

I am a Spurs fan and I sympathise with Tamworth not getting a replay. But the first time Spurs could have fit it in would have been the date of the fourth round. Too many games in the calendar, we need to cut back to make room for replays.

  15. Villa v Tottenham FA Cup date dilemmapublished at 10:21 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

There has been a lot of debate about the absence of FA Cup replays and how it affects clubs like Tamworth, who could now be looking at a money-spinning trip to Tottenham.

The decision to get rid of them was made due to the expansion of European competitions.

And even without them, there are still issues.

Aston Villa have been drawn at home to Tottenham.

Tottenham play the previous Thursday - 6 February - at Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg.

In theory, that means the FA Cup tie at Villa Park should be played on Sunday or Monday, 9 or 10 February. But the midweek that follows is for Champions League play-offs.

If Villa find themselves outside the top eight, they may have to play on Tuesday, 11 February.

Villa can deal with it by maintaining their current fifth spot. But if they don't, they won't know when their play-off is scheduled until Friday, 31 January.

I think many football fans are starting to really dislike the way Arsenal play, the shenanigans and 'dark arts' they engage in, and the excuses of Arteta. It's a huge shift from the days of Wenger (who won silverware with beautiful football). Found myself almost happy at a Utd win, and I'm a Liverpool fan!

Arteta has carried on in the Wenger tradition? Yes spot on. Not winning anything major and obsessed with pass pass pretty football.

Nottm Forest v Liverpool (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

On the importance of starting the game well and not conceding early, Liverpool boss Arne Slot said: "The opening of a game is always very important, especially in an away game. I expect the atmosphere [at Nottingham Forest] to be fired up from the start so it makes it even more important to not let them get going any more.

"They are a team that hardly concede goals. They don’t take many risks in their build-up play so when they lose the ball they have many players behind the ball and they defend with 11 players."

Football is far better without VAR. The problem is they are constantly making rules/law just to suit it. Apply common sense instead of 12 pages for handball alone.

    Gani in South Africa

This VAR debate shows people will moan no matter what happens, with or without VAR. In my opinion the game is better without, bring in the automated offsides and leave the rest of it to the refs. If they make a mistake, they make a mistake. At least there's an excuse if there's no VAR.

    Henry, Sussex

Watching football without VAR was like a dead weight had been lifted from the game. The Arsenal v Manchester United game was fast and furious. The ref got the penalty wrong but made a decision and stuck with it. The only thing that slowed that game down was Arsenal’s elaborate choreography at their set pieces.

Nottingham Forest v Liverpool (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Speaking about Nottingham Forest's style of play, Arne Slot said: "They have a hard-working team without the ball and they can also hold the ball. Chris Wood is a very good example of that.

"They have scored and been a threat by counter-attacks a lot, but they also have quality when they want to play with the ball.

"Nuno has done a great job at implementing a style of play that suits the players."

  20. 'This club has always brought talent through the ranks'published at 10:03 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

Nottm Forest v Liverpool (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

On academy players doing well when featuring in the FA Cup and EFL Cup this season, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said: "It is very important for every club, but especially this club. This club has always brought talent through the ranks and it is nice to see a few having an impact in training sessions and in games.

"It is always nice because it also gives a good energy in the training ground and team when they are doing well."
