Regarding replays, I understand the idea of a smaller team getting a big pay-day from a replay, but the Arsenal v Man U game was far more interesting as a neutral because you knew there was going to be a winner. Also, it's nice to know it's all done with and we can move on to the next round now (after tonight and Tuesday's fixtures anyway). That's something that has annoyed me. Why spread the third round over so many days?

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on his side's only league defeat of the season, at home to Nottingham Forest in the reverse fixture: "They have already showed in retrospect how good of a team they are. When Liverpool lose a home game it’s something you don’t expect. For us to lose on that day was hard to take. Now, looking back and seeing where they are in the league, it is not such a shock result as it felt then.

"They had a good game plan and I expect their wingers, who have done so well, to be in their starting XI tomorrow."

Honourable mention has to go to Raheem Sterling. Time and again, head down, running into blind alleys. On five or six occasions, had the opportunity to pass or take a sensible option and just ended up losing it. Yet pundits said he was looking "sharp". The quicker he is gone, the better. Shocking.

On facing Nottingham Forest, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said: "I have always said you can judge the table best halfway through the season. They are up there with the rest so they are definitely a team in competition with us and the others.

"If you look at the way they play and their results then it is deserved. It is going to be a very difficult challenge for us to get a result."

Getting rid of Arteta is ridiculous. He's done a great job and just needs a summer swapping dead wood for a striker.

    J in Cardiff

I don't think many Arsenal fans would truly want Arteta gone. He's actually doing a pretty good job there - so many teams fumble after an institutional manager leaves but he's carried on pretty well after Arsene. Agreed his recruitment team have left some huge holes - primarily not picking up a world-class striker. The people wanting him gone are fans from other clubs who don't like his team's tactics.

Jif, Manchester: The penalty awarded to Arsenal showed what life would be like without VAR as I believe that would have been overturned if the referee had been asked to take another look. Whilst VAR is incredibly frustrating in its current format, it does have a place when decisions like that are made. The contact was just not sufficient enough for Havertz to fall down like that. So, in summary, I'm back on the fence with it!

Who should Arsenal sign in January?

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards sets out in stark detail what this Arsenal team is missing and why they urgently need to sign a striker:

"If they would have had a striker who knows where the net is, who knows the movements [things would have been different against Manchester United].

"He doesn't even have to play well.

"How many times have we talked about [Erling] Haaland where he's not even been in the game but he gets a chance and he scores.

"That is the difference [for Arsenal] at this moment in time."

Harry Maguire was phenomenal yesterday. After a tricky couple of seasons, it's great to see him rediscover the form he showed in his first season at Man Utd. Surely an England call-up beckons.

To make matters worse for Arsenal, striker Gabriel Jesus was forced off on a stretcher in the first half at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Speaking about Jesus' knee injury at full-time, Arteta said that it was a big worry for the Gunners, with Bukayo Saka also currently sidelined.

"It's a big worry, that's my feeling." Arteta said.

"He had to come off on a stretcher with a lot of pain, touching his knee. It's not looking good.

"The worrying factor is the feeling that he had. When he had to come off and the pain that he was in."

Maybe I play Football Manager too much? Keep saying it, Arsenal need a proper old-fashioned centre-forward! We also need to find replacements for Partey and Jorginho? We need to start mixing up the style of play because teams are starting to work us out!

Kai Havertz was at the forefront of Arsenal's attack during their FA Cup third-round defeat to Manchester United.

He had an expected goals total of 0.8 in the match, second only to Martin Odegaard, who missed a penalty during the FA Cup defeat.

United, who won the game, had a team total of just 0.27 xG for the match and Havertz also missed a penalty during the shootout.

Bayindir shines as 10-man Man United beat Arsenal in dramatic thriller

For anyone not familiar with the key incidents in Arsenal's defeat at home to Manchester United, have a watch of the highlights above, but here is how the FA Cup third-round tie panned out:

    • Joshua Zirkzee scored the winning penalty as a 10-man Manchester United beat Arsenal in a thrilling encounter to reach the fourth round
    • United had to play with 10 men for nearly an hour after Diogo Dalot was shown a second yellow card, having mistimed a tackle on Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino
    • Manchester United took the lead through an excellent Bruno Fernandes goal in the 52nd minute, after Alejandro Garnacho took advantage of a Gabriel slip and crossed for Fernandes to curl the ball into the top corner
    • Dalot was sent off in the 61st minute after his clumsy tackle and Arsenal were level just two minutes later when centre-back Gabriel volleyed in from inside the area
    • The Gunners then had a massive chance to take the lead when Kai Havertz was adjudged to have been brought down by Harry Maguire in the box and referee Andrew Madley awarded a penalty
    • There was a delay in the spot-kick being taken after a melee in the box in which Maguire, Havertz and Gabriel were all booked
    • Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard stepped up to take the penalty but Altay Bayindir dived to his left to push away the ball and keep the scores level
    • Mikel Arteta's side had big chances through Declan Rice and Havertz again to win the game but could not beat the impressive Bayindir
    • United were made to defend throughout extra time as Arsenal looked for ways to take the lead with their numerical advantage
    • But Arteta's side could not find a way through and Havertz had his penalty saved by Bayindir before Zirkzee sent David Raya the wrong way to win the shootout.

Kai Havertz clearly and obviously dived to win a penalty. No ifs or buts. It was one of the most obvious acts of cheating you will ever see on a football pitch and one that could (and usually would) have changed the outcome of the game. Havertz's punishment? Absolutely nothing. That is a real problem that needs addressing, but there is no desire to do anything about it. So frustrating for those who love the game. Sort it out.

Arsenal have lost five of their last six FA Cup ties, while the Gunners have been eliminated from the competition in the third round in back-to-back campaigns for the first time since 1995/1996 (v Millwall and Sheffield United).

Since winning the FA Cup in 2020, Arsenal have only won twice in the competition in the last five seasons, beating Newcastle and Oxford.

As for Arsenal potentially being out of both domestic cups inside five days - their season is imploding unless Arteta forgets his dogmatic approach and buys a striker. Arsenal have lacked ruthlessness in front of goal for years - even under Wenger. They are obsessed with scoring the perfect goal, covering this up with set pieces.

Right, let's move back to the FA Cup and take a deep dive into Arsenal's current problems, which seem to be stacking up for manager Mikel Arteta.

After suffering a chastening 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle on Tuesday in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final, they were dumped out of the FA Cup on Sunday, losing at home to Manchester United on penalties...
