Jean-Philippe Mateta scored 16 goals in the Premier League last season

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner says his side's performance against Tottenham is the "benchmark" after they claimed a much-needed first Premier League win of the season.

Jean-Philippe Mateta's first-half strike lifted them out of the relegation places and up to 17th, with a trip to second-bottom Wolves to follow next weekend, after Wednesday's visit to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup.

Pressure was also mounting on Glasner, who was appointed Palace boss in February, after picking up just three points in their opening eight games.

And he told BBC Match of the Day: "We have to show it again in three days against Aston Villa and then against Wolves. This is the benchmark. You can score and concede, this is football."

After being reinstated to the starting line-up, the Frenchman broke the deadlock after Spurs defender Micky van de Ven was easily dispossessed deep in his own half and, following a scramble in the box, Mateta powered home his third goal of the season.

Ange Postecoglou's side responded well after falling behind and Van de Ven's spinning effort from a corner deflected off the thigh of team-mate Brennan Johnson before bouncing off the post.

In the final stages of the first half, Palace keeper Dean Henderson was finally called into action as he produced a wonderful, fingertip save to deny James Maddison on his 200th top-flight appearance.

After some fine work from Johnson early in the second half, Dejan Kulusevski was unable to level, while Palace's Eberechi Eze squeezed the ball under Guglielmo Vicario, but the offside flag was rightly raised.

England forward Eze was a constant thorn in Spurs' side and incensed when a penalty was not awarded after he was pulled down in the area.

Substitute Richarlison could then only smile at the Palace crowd when he poorly failed to make contact on Pedro Porro's dangerous ball into the six-yard box.

At the other end, Adam Wharton almost scored his first Palace goal with a wonderful right-footed effort from outside of the box, but Vicario was equal to it.

A desperate Spurs continued to push forward in search of an equaliser but the home defence, which has kept one clean sheet this season, stood firm to lift themselves out of the bottom three.

Eze shines in welcome return to form

After scoring 11 goals in 27 league games last season, Eze's lack of form this term has been a bit of a mystery.

The 26-year-old has managed just one goal and found himself out of the most recent England squad after playing a part in the Three Lions' run to the Euro 2024 final in July.

After Michael Olise's departure to Bayern Munich, Palace chairman Steve Parish said he was "astounded" at the lack of interest in Eze during the summer transfer window.

Boss Glasner opted to set his side up in a new formation at the start of the campaign, perhaps to combat the loss of the influential Olise and get the best out of new signing Eddie Nketiah.

But with striker Nketiah dropped to the bench in favour of Mateta, Eze looked like last season's player with the ability to play the ball up to the big Frenchman and pick it up in dangerous spaces.

Mateta praised Eze afterwards as he told Sky Sports: "I say every time, if he played good then we would win. Today he gave me the pass."

Lively throughout the game, Eze registered a first assist of the campaign for Mateta's strike, and will now be hoping to maintain that in a big week for Palace.

Same old story for disjointed Spurs

Was that performance typical Tottenham? After a fine win over West Ham last weekend, Postecoglou's side were expecting to build some momentum and push closer to the top four.

Instead, they have become the first team to be beaten by an out-of-form Palace, who outfought their London counterparts for much of the 90 minutes.

Before this encounter, the hosts had only been in front for 37 minutes this season and were the league's lowest scorers.

But despite Spurs having 66% of the ball in the first half, Henderson was largely untroubled as a disappointed Postecoglou looked on.

The influence of injured captain Son Heung-min was massively missed in a Spurs attack that looked disjointed.

Stand-in captain Maddison lasted just 62 minutes at Selhurst Park in a game where his side lacked leadership and drive on the pitch as they succumbed to a third away loss in five.
