Tottenham did the league double over Sheffield United the last time they faced in 2020-21, having won just two of their previous 11 against the Blades (D4 L5).
Sheffield United have won just one of their last nine away league games against Tottenham (D2 L6), picking up a 1-0 victory at White Hart Lane in November 1991.
Tottenham have won seven of their last eight Premier League matches against newly promoted sides, although the exception was their last such match at home, going down 2-3 to Bournemouth in April. Not since September 1994 (run of 3) have Spurs lost successive home league games to promoted sides.
Sheffield United have lost 14 of their 15 previous Premier League matches against sides starting the day in the top two, with the only exception a 2-1 win away to Manchester United in January 2021.
Only in 2009-10 (12) have Tottenham earned more points from their first four matches of a Premier League season than the 10 they have this term. Victory over Sheffield United would see Spurs on 13 points from five games, a record they haven’t had to start a league campaign (assuming 3 pts/win) since 1965-66.
Sheffield United are winless in their opening four games of a league season for a third time in the last four campaigns (also 2020-21 and 2021-22), something they had only done in three of their previous 20 league seasons beforehand. The Blades also failed to win their fifth league game in both 2020-21 and 2021-22.
Tottenham have scored 2+ goals in all four of their league games under Ange Postecoglou. Only four managers have seen their side score at least twice in each of their first five ever games in the Premier League: Carlo Ancelotti (2009), Pep Guardiola (2016), Craig Shakespeare (2017), and Maurizio Sarri (2018).
After a run of 27 Premier League games without a draw from December 2020 to August 2023 (W7 L20), Sheffield United drew 2-2 with Everton last time out. The Blades haven’t drawn successive games in the competition since a run of three from November to December 2019, which included a 1-1 draw with Spurs.
Since the start of 2021-22, the only English players with more combined goals and assists in the Premier League than James Maddison’s 43 (24 goals, 19 assists) are Harry Kane (59) and Bukayo Saka (46). Maddison has scored in both of Tottenham’s last two Premier League games, last scoring in three in a row in the competition in May 2022 for Leicester (run of 4).
Tottenham’s Son Heung-min has been directly involved in 31 goals in his last 31 Premier League appearances against newly promoted sides (21 goals, 10 assists), scoring a hat-trick at Burnley last time out. Only seven different players have ever scored a hat-trick in successive Premier League appearances, most recently Erling Haaland in August 2022.
After scoring against Everton last time out, Cameron Archer could become the second player to score in both of his first two Premier League appearances for Sheffield United, after Brian Deane in August 1992. Should Archer both start and score in this match, he would be the youngest English player (21 years, 281 days) to score in both of his first two Premier League starts since Eric Dier in August 2014 (20y 221d).
