James Trafford is goalkeeper that has garnered a lot of interest this summer after an impressive 2024/25 season for Burnley.

In the campaign where they won promotion back into the Premier League, Trafford kept 29 clean sheets in the Championship and only conceded 16 goals.

He has played for Burnley since 2023 when he signed from Manchester City for £19m with add-ons on a four-year deal.

The England youth international came through City's academy but during his senior career City sent him out on loan. He spent spells at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before leaving to join Burnley on a permanent move.

  15. Trafford to Man City?published at 11:26 British Summer Time 25 July

Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign goalkeeper James Trafford, reports Fabrizio Romano.

A deal is in place with Burnley under value of £40m buy back clause. Trafford said yes to Man City as Pep Guardiola wanted him, he reports.

Newcastle are also said to have been informed about Trafford’s decision.

There's more on this from The Athletic's David Ornstein: "Manchester City to sign James Trafford from Burnley.

"Sold at £14m & purchasing for £27m so buy-back cost - £13m. Activated matching rights on Newcastle offer & 22-year-old picked Manchester City - 5+1yr contract. Ederson staying, Ortega to go but nothing close."

Newcastle are exploring a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko in case Alexander Isak departs this summer.

Isak has not travelled with the Magpies for their pre-season tour of Asia as he considers his future at the club amid interest from Liverpool.

Sesko was heavily linked with Arsenal until the Gunners shifted their focus to Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea were also keeping tabs on the Slovenia international earlier in the window.

Newcastle will only attempt to sign the 22-year-old, who scored 13 goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances last season, if Isak leaves.

You joke, well, I assume you do, Simon, but when me and football finance expert Kieran Maguire chatted about who Isak could move to this month, he told me:

"In theory, Tottenham could afford Isak."

He did then add: "But whether the player would want to move from a team who finished fifth to one who finished 17th is a whole other story."

The 23-year-old joined Albion in January from Derby County and featured twice for the Blues in the Premier League last season.

Boss Fabian Hurzeler said: “Eiran has benefitted from the period time he’s been with us and had a strong pre-season.

“This loan offers him the opportunity to play regularly, and continue his development. We’ll be keeping a close watch on him as the season progresses.”
