Image source, PA MediaAston Villa were twice pegged back by winless RB Leipzig but scored late on to move closer to the Champions League knockout stages.
Ross Barkley's deflected strike secured victory late on after Lois Openda and Christoph Baumgartner cancelled out goals from John McGinn and Jhon Duran respectively.
It took just three minutes for the Premier League side to take the lead when Ollie Watkins nodded down Matty Cash's cross to leave McGinn with the simple task of smashing home from close range.
Watkins could have easily added a second soon after but he could not get a touch on Lucas Digne's low ball across the face of goal.
Villa looked to be in total control when Emiliano Martinez mis-judged a long punt forward, allowing Openda to nip in and slide the ball into the empty net.
Watkins had the ball in the net just before the break, but the offside flag denied him what would have been just his second goal scored from open play in 11 games.
The England striker was replaced by Jhon Duran at half-time and it was the Colombian who restored Villa's lead with a stunning strike from 25 yards.
Moments after Duran was denied a second goal by another offside flag, Leipzig drew level for a second time when Baumgartner met Openda's cross with a cushioned volley into the top corner of Martinez's goal.
Openda should have given Leipzig a late lead but he stroked Pau Torres' wayward pass straight at Martinez.
Just as a draw looked inevitable Barkley's strike took a huge deflection off Lukas Klostermann, wrong-footing Peter Gulacsi and snatching the three points.
FT: Girona 0-1 Liverpool

Image source, ReutersLiverpool are all but through to the Champions League last 16 after Mohamed Salah's penalty clinched victory at Girona.
Arne Slot's side were gifted a second-half spot-kick when former Manchester United and Everton midfielder Donny van de Beek caught Luis Diaz's heel in the penalty area.
Salah dispatched his penalty with ease, sending Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga the wrong way to net his 46th Champions League goal.
Returning visiting goalkeeper Alisson Becker made a handful of good saves as Liverpool continued their perfect start to this season's Champions League, and the Reds will be assured of a top-eight finish - sending them straight into the last 16 - if they get a point from their final two fixtures in the league phase.
Liverpool - who lead the league-phase table - would also be guaranteed a top-eight finish if other results go their way this week.
The Reds face Lille away and PSV Eindhoven at home in January.
They have won six out of six Champions League matches this season and have already secured a place in the knockout-phase play-offs - the round before the last 16.
FT: Dinamo Zagreb 0-0 Celtic

Image source, PA MediaCeltic stretched their unbeaten Champions League run to four matches after securing another valuable away point against Dinamo Zagreb to leave progression to the latter stages in their grasp.
Brendan Rodgers' side have now accumulated nine points, with a home tie against Young Boys to follow in January, followed by a trip to Aston Villa.
Their search for an elusive away win in this competition goes on, though, the last being against Anderlecht under Rodgers seven years ago.
Against a Zagreb side struggling for form and hampered by an injury avalanche, Celtic sensed an opportunity and started confidently, controlling the ball for long spells, but they just could not open up their opponents.
FT: Atalanta 2-3 Real Madrid
Image source, ReutersKylian Mbappe scored his 50th Champions League goal and Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham were also on target as Real Madrid secured a much-needed win against Atalanta.
The Spanish giants have struggled in Europe this year, having lost three of their five games before Tuesday's match in Italy. Consequently they needed a victory to improve their chances of progressing to the knockout stage, which they got that with this confidence-boosting display.
France international Mbappe got the ball rolling with a goal in the 10th minute, breaking clear of his marker before finishing smartly.
It was his 12th goal since joining Real in the summer and he should have had a second later in the first half when he charged through the middle, but his shot from outside the box was saved.
However, the home side were dealt a blow nine minutes before half time when Mbappe appeared to suffer an injury and, although he was able to walk off the pitch, he was replaced by Rodrygo. Atalanta then equalised on the stroke of half time when Charles De Ketelaere scored a penalty after Sead Kolasinac went down inside the box.
Real battled back after the break as Vinicius Jr found the bottom corner with a neat finish on his return from a hamstring injury before Bellingham fired home for his first goal in the Champions League this season.
Ademola Lookman gave Atalanta hope with his 11th goal of the season, whipping a shot in at the near post, but Real held off late pressure to take three crucial points.
FT: Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Inter Milan
Nordi Mukiele scored a dramatic late winner as Bayer Leverkusen inflicted a first Champions League defeat of the season on Inter Milan.
The result means Xabi Alonso's side leapfrog the Italians, moving second in the table behind Liverpool and into an excellent position to advance to the last 16 automatically as one of the best eight teams.
The 90th-minute intervention from on-loan Paris St-Germain defender Mukiele came as a largely uneventful contest appeared destined to end in a stalemate.
However, Mukiele popped up to blast home from close range after Simone Inzaghi's side had failed to clear a cross from the right.
While Inter fought a rearguard action for much of Tuesday evening they restricted the hosts to a handful of shots on target and will be disappointed by the manner in which they conceded their first goal in the competition this term.
FT: RB Salzburg 0-3 Paris St-Germain
Paris St-Germain claimed a comfortable victory at Red Bull Salzburg to record their first win in the Champions League since September.
The French outfit proved far too strong for their Austrian counterparts, controlling the tempo and tone of the game from the outset.
Salzburg goalkeeper Alexander Schlager made several fine saves, including a double stop to keep out Achraf Hakimi and Goncalo Ramos, before he was eventually beaten by the latter from close range.
PSG arrived at the Red Bull Arena without a victory in four Champions League outings - their longest winless streak in the competition since a run of five in 2015 - but they played with confidence and were fully deserving of the result.
A patient approach paid dividends in the second half when Nuno Mendes grabbed PSG's second and Salzburg's heads dropped when Desire Doue extended the lead in the closing stages.
Victory moves PSG up one place to 24th in the standings - a position which would see them through to the play-off phase - and offers hope of playing knockout football in the Champions League for a 13th successive campaign.
PSG still have Manchester City and Stuttgart to play in January.
FT: Brest 1-0 PSV Eindhoven

Image source, Getty ImagesBrest's brilliant run in the Champions League continued as they moved up to fifth in the table following a hard-fought win over PSV Eindhoven.
Julien le Cardinal scored the only goal two minutes before half-time after PSV failed to clear the ball and the centre-half smashed home from a yard out.
The French side should have doubled their lead early in the second half but Mama Balde dragged his effort wide and then his heavy touch when racing through on goal allowed PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez to gather.
PSV's Ismael Saibari then came close to equalising when his terrific effort from outside of the box struck the inside of the post.
The Dutch visitors thought they had been awarded a penalty for handball but a video assistant referee (VAR) review deemed Joey Veerman's shot to have struck the thigh of Abdoulaye Ndiaye.
Mathias Pereira Lage missed a huge chance to wrap up the victory for Brest but his sliding effort was well anticipated by Benitez.
Eric Roy's Brest - who were an amateur side 20 years ago - have won four of their six Champions League games as they sit in an automatic qualification spot while PSV are 20th, with the top 24 teams out of 36 making the knockout rounds.
FT: Club Brugge 2-1 Sporting
Image source, Getty ImagesClub Brugge fought back to beat Sporting to boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Geny Catamo had given the Portuguese champions an early lead, tapping in after Maximiliano Araujo's left-foot shot had struck the post.
However, Christos Tzolis' deflected effort flew in off visiting defender Eduardo Quaresma to draw the hosts level and Casper Nielsen then drove in a late winner from close range.
Sporting will feel aggrieved by the outcome after being awarded a first-half penalty only to see the decision by English referee Anthony Taylor changed following a VAR review.
The foul on Araujo by Andreas Skov Olsen was deemed to have taken place fractionally outside the penalty area.
The result lifts the Belgian club from 23rd to 14th in the table with 10 points from six games in a match they would have regarded as crucial with fixtures against Juventus and Manchester City still to come.
FT: Shakhtar Donetsk 1-5 Bayern Munich
Image source, ReutersBayern Munich came from behind to thrash Shakhtar Donetsk and boost their chances of reaching the Champions League last 16.
Brazilian forward Kevin put hosts Shakhtar in front with just five minutes gone, curling beautifully into the far corner for his first goal in the competition.
Falling behind seemed to spur on Bayern, who were without England international Harry Kane because of injury, and they were level six minutes later when Konrad Laimer lashed into the roof of the net.
Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise and Leroy Sane formed an attack-minded trio behind forward Thomas Muller, and each of them went close to grabbing Bayern's second.
Shakhtar, against the run of play, should have restored their advantage through Georgiy Sudakov, but the Ukraine midfielder failed to convert with just the goalkeeper to beat from 10 yards.
Muller had a simple tap-in moments later, scoring his 55th goal in the Champions League, to ensure Bayern went in with a half-time lead.
It was one-way traffic in the second half as Bayern put their foot on the gas in search of their first away win in this season's Champions League.
Olise grabbed the third from the penalty spot after Alaa Ghram fouled Sacha Boey and Musiala further widened the gap with a simple finish following some slick footwork.
France forward Olise, who joined from Crystal Palace for £50m in the summer, rounded off the scoring with a fine individual effort, beating several players before wrong-footing the goalkeeper and sliding into an open goal.

Champions League is very difficult and we have to expect that every team playing at home are feeling strong. We played with consistency and domination."
On substitutes: "The idea when we prepare the game the plan is also for the subs to help if we needed it. Watkins had a small injury and Duran scores. Buendia and Barkley scoring the third goal. This is what any coach would want."
On Jhon Duran: "Sometimes he is very impassioned and we have to try and keep balanced with him. He scored a great goal and he works and we are trying to get the team strong with a tactical approach. His potential is massive. Tactically he is improving and today he played a fantastic 45 minutes."
On going for the win rather than draw: "The last 10 minutes you have to be positive and try and use the players you have and the subs to try and get the victory."
On a potential top-eight finish: "Today we were thinking if we won we could be a contender in the last two matches to be in the top eight. We achieved this option and we are going to try and get top eight. We are happy because we are in the top 24."

"Leipzig are a very good team and we knew we had to pay attention on their transition. I thought we had some really good spells on the ball and in the end we got the win which is really important.
"We don't need to get carried away now. We know how tough it is going to be. We need to enjoy this win but not get carried away.

I thought Jhon Duran really led the line well. On previous occasions, obviously he gets his goals but I think Ollie Watkins offers more as an all-round striker.
I think that's probably why Unai Emery favours him to start games but I thought tonight when he came on, he put himself about more, he got more involved in the link-up play and then tops it off with his goal as well.

Nobody will want to play Villa in a knockout competition, the way they play, the attacking options that they have got.
Look at their performances in the Champions League, they've beaten Bayern Munich, drawn with Juventus, lost at Bruges, beaten Bologna, they've beaten some good teams.
I don't think Monaco or Celtic will hold any worry for them.
Going forward, top eight, top 16, however they get through, I think they will be a real problem for teams in this competition.

RB Leipzig and Aston Villa have never previously faced each other in Europe. However, the German side have lost each of their last four matches against English sides in the UEFA Champions League, while conceding 14 goals in those four games.
This will be Aston Villa’s first away game against a German opponent in Europe since December 2008, in a 1-3 defeat to Hamburg in the UEFA Cup. Meanwhile, their last one in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League was in October 1981, in a 2-1 victory over Berliner FC Dynamo.
RB Leipzig have lost each of their last five UEFA Champions League matches, all of which have been this season. If they lose here, it will be their longest ever losing streak in the competition, and the longest by a German side overall since Bayer Leverkusen in March 2003 (7).
After winning their first three UEFA Champions League games of 2024-25, Aston Villa have failed to win their last two (D1 L1). The last time Unai Emery failed to win three consecutive group/league phase games with a single club in the competition was in September-November 2015 with Sevilla (4).
German teams have lost all three of their matches against English sides in the UEFA Champions League this season, all without scoring a goal: Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig 0-1 Liverpool and Liverpool 4-0 Bayer Leverkusen.
RB Leipzig have averaged 386 high-intensity pressures per game in the UEFA Champions League this season; the second-most of any team in the tournament, only behind Sturm Graz (392.4). Meanwhile, Aston Villa rank 33rd out of 36 teams for high-intensity pressures per game in the competition this term (265.8).
Aston Villa are the team with the highest percentage of their total passes being line-breaking passes in the UEFA Champions League this season (15.9%). Indeed, only two sides have made more line-breaking passes from their own half than Villa (211) this term: Bayer Leverkusen (241) and Juventus (216).
Jhon Durán is Aston Villa’s top scorer in the UEFA Champions League this season (two goals), while no player has attempted more shots for them (9). This is despite the Colombian only being on the pitch for 35% of Villa’s match time in the competition this season (159/450).
Benjamin Sesko has scored three of RB Leipzig’s four goals in the UEFA Champions League this season. Among teams to have netted more than once, Sesko has accounted for a higher percentage of his team’s goals than any other player in 2024-25 (75%).
Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers is one of only five players to have completed 10+ dribbles (18) and created 10+ chances from open play (10) in the UEFA Champions League this season, along with Vinícius Júnior, Florian Wirtz, Savinho, and Johan Bakayoko.
